Fair minded person with a fair point of view
by keo15929 ini have been one of jehovah's witnesses for about 9 years before i became inactive.
i just had some comments i'd like to make.. i think the reason why i'm inactive now is because i've come to a point in my life where i feel obligated to admit that i just don't know.
at one time i was as fiery and zealous of a witness as anyone could be but i had this nagging feeling that i really didn't know what i was talking about when i was witnessing to people.

keo, I understand where you are coming from and I thought as you do about the sincerity of the FDS until I found out more about it.
The list Blondie mentioned is a start. Don't you wonder why they have changed their minds about these sorts of things? Is it because Jehovah whispered into their ears or conferenced into their roundtable meetings to tell them to do so? Or is it because their legal department told them the risks of continuing to be stubborn about these things? And their attitude after the fact is another indication of their deceiptful intentions. They say certain things are a "conscience matter" to satisfy legal requirements and at the same time, allow congregations to treat persons who exercise their newfound rights in the same manner as before. They do not come clean about why they are doing it. It is always a big MYSTERY. And there are no apologies, sincere or otherwise. Only martyrs who lived through needless troubles or died in vain.
I trusted these people with everything at one time in my life. After the trust died, I still believed they were basically good. I was wrong. At least I can admit it and apologize for any stupidity I have caused.
Carl Sagan (Broca's Brain) was right when he said...
"Doctrines that make no predictions are less compelling than those which make correct predictions; they are in turn more successful than doctrines that make false predictions. But not always. One prominent American religion [editor's note: Jehovah's Witnesses] confidently predicted that the world would end in 1914. Well, 1914 has come and gone, and - while the events of that year were certainly of some importance - the world does not, at least so far as I can see, seem to have ended.
There are at least three responses that an organized religion can make in the face of such a failed and fundamental prophecy: They could have said, "Oh, did we say ‘1914’? So sorry, we meant ‘2014.’ A slight error in calculation. Hope you weren’t inconvenienced in any way." But they did not. They could have said, "Well, the world would have ended, except we prayed very hard and interceded with God so He spared the Earth." But they did not. Instead, they did something much more ingenious. They announced that the world had in fact ended in 1914, and if the rest of us hadn’t noticed, that was our lookout.
It is astonishing in the face of such transparent evasions that this religion has any adherents at all. But religions are tough. Either they make no contentions which are subject to disproof or they quickly redesign doctrine after disproof. The fact that religions can be so shamelessly dishonest, so contemptuous of the intelligence of their adherents, and still flourish does not speak very well for the tough-mindedness of the believers. But it does indicate, if a demonstration were needed, that near the core of the religious experience is something remarkably resistant to rational inquiry."

welcome Keo,
And I'm not a hater of gay people. I work with a couple of them and they are pretty good people. One of them cuts my hair.
this has to be the funniest thing I have read all day.
I can relate to many parts of your story. Even the gay parts. A few years ago, I was watching this TV show with 2 guys making out and I didn't like it, but for a change, I asked myself why I didn't like it, and I realized it was really something from my JW thinking that was still with me. It really woke me up to the fact that I need to question all of my thinking and why I think this way or that way and whether it is just a way of thinking that was drilled into me that I never needed to let go or is it really what I thought was right? It's been awhile since that happened and since that time, I have come to think that gays are just born that way. It's not a sickness or a sin, it just is. But I don't want to get preachy to you, I just think that as long as you really ask yourself why you think or feel this way or that way, you might be surprised.

Yates verdict
by sammielee24 inthe andrea yates verdict came down again and it was not guilty.
she will be sent to a mental facility instead of prison where in time, and after therapy, she may in all liklihood be reintegrated into society at some point.
what do you think of the verdict?

Lots of people felt Rusty Yates was somewhat responsible. Didn't he have his mother at the house all the time to help out? He was probably trying to handle the situation and never thought harm would come to the kids. Did she verbally threaten to harm them that he knew about?
The questions I want to ask are... what role did their church play in all of this? Was it ok to seek help from mental professionals or was that discouraged? The teachings of this religion really played a number on Andrea Yates, was it her mental instability alone that drove her to this or should church doctrine be looked at as a factor?
She shouldn't get death for this - she wasn't in her right mind. This wasn't a cold killing of 5 children for the insurance money. This wasn't even a rage killing.
I think a huge factor in the verdict was the whole "law and order" episode business. Those prosecutors shouldn't be allowed to keep practicing law. There should be a punishment for that sort of BS. I don't know if they ever got their wrists slapped or if they are still at it...

I had these same questions too when I was just beginning to understand the truth about the JW religion. I decided not to make any decision about these sorts of beliefs for a very long time. I tend to think there is probably not a god in the sky or an afterlife, but I really don't know for certain. And I won't know for certain, ever. So it's hard to accept that. But not knowing isn't so bad. I don't think it's reasonable to throw the burden of certainty on people when there is really no way people could be certain of any of these "mysteries". Beliefs are irrelevant. If we want to invent a god or an afterlife to ease our minds, that's fine. It can even be fun. And we know it can be dangerous, but not always.
It is what it is (or isn't) and "it" doesn't depend on our beliefs. That's all I've got.

That's a pretty good idea, elsewhere. I wish I had done that when my parents said I wouldn't complete highschool (before armageddon came).
What they should have said is I would never complete college. That, they might have had right.
