I liked minimus' comment that it had to be done at night because that's when Jesus did it.. I heard from a talk in the last year that (because JWs only celebrate this once a year, compared to the Catholics who do it (weekly?) more often than that) even though we don't have anything in the Bible restricting how often to do this, the fact that Jesus did it on passover suggests that it should be done annually and any more often would be unscriptural. Unscriptural? That's just a bad interpretation. They had just admitted there was no scriptural limit or command on how many often to celebrate it. Whatever!

what's your favority JW reference from a movie or TV ?
by itsallgoodnow in.
mine is from friday, the movie with ice cube, where a couple of jw ladies wake up ice cube's character's family one morning and there's some mouthing off, and you wouldn't believe the nasty words coming out of these sweet looking old "sisters".
hilarious!.

Oh, yes homey, I remember that stuff too! that's just wishful thinking!
Next they'll be doing parts on the service meeting .... knock knock knock, "hello we were speaking to folks in the neighborhood today..." householder cuts in with "hey, Leno said something the other night about you guys, can you tell me more?" which of course leads to an acceptance of a free home bible study. They should really do that, make it more realistic, ya know?

Factors that Influence Fear of Death
by peacefulpete inthis is an review of a study that was done in florida u.s.a. the language is thick, but all terms are defined.
the results are interesting and surprising.
wisdom, purpose in life, and attitudes toward death (pdf)

thanks for that reference, pete, I printed it and will finish reading it later.
Have you ever wondered why, if JWs have all the answers, death is so difficult for them? I've always felt it was because of the "guarantees" of everlasting life, through Armageddon, that are the problem, because they are unprepared for any other alternative.

these are all great. Thanks, Fader, for all the dialogue from Friday, I couldn't remember it completely, except for the MF part.
Another one of my favorites is Do the Right Thing, where there are witnesses walking around this neighborhood for, like, the whole movie, and when they show Spike Lee the mags, he just says "NO!" and that's enough to make me want to die laughing.

JWs are trained to not think for themselves... I remember when I was always second guessing myself... ( if I'm a sister, am I allowed to do this or will a brother take offense? and the list goes on)
I'm sure it left a bad impression on visitors, though!
Witnesses are always told exactly when, where and how to show kindness, and that can leave you unable and unprepared to show it spontaneously.
If you leave that thinking behind though, you eventually learn to trust your instincts and will jump up to help the grandmother. Most of these people would have stopped to help her in the market, but in the KH or assembly, you think, am I supposed to do this?

Racism In The Organization
by Hunyadi inon the surface, racism is not suppose to exist in the org.
i have a different experience .
.. i use to work for a brother who was also a general contractor.

There's all kinds of "isms" with this group, including prejudice against, people of different racial or national backgrounds, gender, etc.
It doesn't matter if you're white black or green, you're going to be on somebody's not favorite list in the org. That was hard for me to deal with, given they are always sounding their fat trumpet about being a spiritual paradise and all...

People Say Death Is Like Taking A Trip, Right?
by cypher50 indeath is like taking a trip, right?.
ok, let's say that there is this guy named john...and he decides to leave his hometown forever and never comes back.

You know, I was just thinking about all of this "what happens when we die" stuff recently too and it's only because people don't come back and we really don't know that we have all these crazy explanations, some not so great. I'd like to think the dead people we love still know what's going on with us and are watching us (only when we are fully dressed and not doing anything we wouldn't want them to see, of course) but I doubt they are, or they'd try to contact us or something.
Ok, my explanation for what happened to old John is, he drove out one night and had a flat tire, and was trying to flag down an oncoming car, a group of college teens, but they were drunk and hit him by mistake. Shaken, they decided John was probably dead so they put him in the BMW trunk and drove him down to the harbor, where they dropped his body in the water, and vowed to never speak of this again. But he was not dead yet, or was he? He can't "move on" until he is finished getting his revenge on all 4 of those snotty college students. Should be soon, though, I think one of them is stepping into the shower right now.

I told my mother to stop contacting me
by kyria inafter two months of terribly abusive emails from my mother telling me that i "am not capable of appreciating true love" and her weird delusions that i have no friends and my life is a mess, i finally cut her off.
i blocked her email address, and i told her to stop contacting me.
yes, the jehovah?s witnesses.

Kyria, I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with such a difficult situation and that your mom tried to corner you that way.
I just wanted to let you know I thought about how you point blank told your mother "you are in a cult" and how great that was for her to hear. That's how I figured out I had been brainwashed. Somebody told me that very same thing. At first, I had no reason to believe them, but instead of looking only at what JWs defined as a cult, I also looked at other sources and found the general definition of a cult was much wider than I was once led to believe, and that JWs fit right into it. Bravo to you, maybe she will actually be moved to check into it herself. She must change her own mind if it's really going to work. That's why I don't try to discuss things with JWs. They pretty much have to figure it out for themselves, but sometimes they need to be nudged a little with a challenge like the one you gave your mom. That same challenge helped me to find peace - finally.
