it seemed like from what i remember the jw's were always looking into so many alternative medicines and fad diets.
and those easy money schemes, does anyone remember these?
instead of just getting a college education they spent so much time looking into job alternatives.
There were 2 brothers in the area who were of the "annointed." They were both practicers of controversial holistic medicine (snake oil salesmen I now believe). I am not opposed to alternative medical practices, but they guys were really wacky and did "energy" work along with prescribing a lot of worthless products they sold. I had a couple of treatments through these guys. The last time I went to them they were working together--one was training the other and they did some "energy" work on me." The one brother dug his thumbs and elbows into me with what felt like all his strength claiming he was breaking up cystals trapped in my organs. It was so painful I was in tears and the other brother was holding me down to keep me from flying off the table. I felt sick after the treatment and went home bruised. To further note this older annointed bro who inflicted the pain upon me was later DFd. There were many other vitamin trends and scams that came and went over the years.
I also remember tupperware parties, Mary Kaye Parties, crystal parties, Home interior parties. The brothers were at one time involved in selling telephone service and some quit their jobs to devote full time to it and I recall even being accosted at an assembly by an overly zealous telephone service saleaman bro. There were a couple of other multilevel companies like Amway. I went to a talk given by one bro and his wife and they were bragging about how they could full time pioneer now that they were selling such and such products and they were doing so well had just bought a motor home! The brother told us a story about the time he got badly burned from the barbeque and put this salve on his blistering hand and it was a miracle within minutes it was totally healed! Well, that sounded a bit fishy to me at the time, but did we dare not believe this full time pioneer bro's story?
The thing that verged a bit on the mystic was Kinesiology. I was also treated by a well known pioneer sister whose husband was an elder and she was also a kinesiologist. I remember she held a cup in her hand and when the cup felt heavy or light to her when she asked me questions and from that she could determine everything about me. At the end of the diagnosis she gave me a complete run down on my personality and problems and everything in my life that I could do to improve. (There was a heafty fee for her service too) She later broke up with her elder husband who was having an affair on her with another sister. There was another sister who practiced this "science" too and she was really wacky--she didn't even need to ask questions, she just touched your foot and sat there and could tell everything about you from that. She claimed that she could even tell if she sat in the place where you had just sat or slept in the bed you had just slept what your problems were, because your "energy imprint" would still be there. She rather creeped me out.
So those were some of the strange trends I recall. Weird habits--too many to recall.
the message has changed.
now the message is "the society is the channel".

Gary I came in in 82 and and in the congo in that area--at that time--there was at least a sense of comradery (I would never have come into the Organization if it was the way it is today). There were lots of parties--get togethers at parks--things were very family oriented--one of the reasons I was attracted to join up in the first place..
It all changed since then and when I left last year the "spirit" in the congo was one of distrust and paranoia. Avoid those who are weak in the congo--they are dangerous. View those in the world not as potential brothers and sisters, but as evil beings not worthy of our time and attention. Focus on the Organization--don't think --but just obey, obey, obey what they say.

It has become organization-centered now, not "Christian living centered."
Willyloman--I think you have hit the nail on the head. When I came in 20 years ago it was about becoming a better person and studying the scriptures--like you said "checking to see if it was so". Of course much of it was always an illusion, but in the last 5 years (ending this past year) I felt as if I was being beaten over the head with the "Organization." Nothing else mattered--no matter how Christlike you were or how much you developed those "fruits of the spirit" in your life--it was all about the Organization and the ones who held "positions" in the Org and serving the Organization was the only thing that mattered.
ok, it isn't often that i just plain vent or rant on this board, but gosh-darnit, i need to let this out .
some jw's are such nuerotic nutjobs .
.why can't they just be happy and allow you your peace and happiness????.
JWs are the biggest party poopers on earth. Whenever you were ever having any sort of fun doing anything they were always there to throw a wet blanket on anything that wasn't a theocratic activity. Even association among the JW was supposed to be theocratically refreshing (playing bible games, singing bible songs, talking about bible subjects) Of course we didn't all do that, but that was what was laid out for us by the all knowing and wise Organization. So there is major uptightness even among the brotherhood, but if you are on the outside of the Org they assume that if anything goes well for you it is from satan and they most definitely do not want to be supporting that sort of happiness!
i have looked for this topic today, and didn't find it.
so i was wondering if you fine folks could tell me and others what was it exactly that got you out?.
sarcasm is welcome provided you tell us the real reason under it .
Controlling elders making their own rules and the unloving attitudes of those who supported them no matter how abusive they were. Wrote the society to get some answers and begging for help here and finding out they didn't give a dam what the elders did. There was nobody there..The all loving supportive worldwide brotherhood society was one big illusion. It was a rude awakening.
the wts managed to smoothly get out of the expectations they raised in connection with the generation 1914 'prophecy'.
i can't remember any jehovah's witnesses complaining about it - not here in poland at least.
they definitely scored a point here in their game of indoctrination.. however they still have a pretty obvious doctrinal problem.
Well, I recall some talks about how the work is being "delegated" out to the great crowd of faithful followers by the faithful slave since they are getting up in years. (In otherwords they are getting too old to do it themselves and no longer want the responsibility) Then once they get to heaven they will get to rule over all their people from above and will send messages back via those in charge--kind of like channeling, I imagine (My thought). In this way the faithful slave will live on in their glory. Actually I think there will always be a steady stream of those who partake at memorial time. I knew several of them over the years--mostly sisters who were not happy in their marriages, but nevertheless it keeps those partakers numbers up in the year book.

#14 Years ago it seemed as if we were encouraged to be hospitible towards all. Some witnesses even invited their neighbors and such to their home for dinner (ulterior motives) but nonetheless they at least made an attempt to be show their loving kindness. Just recently spoke with someone (not a witness) who remembers years ago he had known some friendly group of witnesses in town who had invited him over for barbeques, etc (he asked me about them and I have never heard of them and have been here for a while so maybe they left too).
One of the last meetings I went to the elder from the platform said this (almost exact words, as it is burned into my mind forever): "We may know people in this community who are nice people, who practice good morals and we may reason that these people are OK, but brothers let me tell you we should not be socializing with these people. We should not be playing basketball with these people. We should not even be speaking with these people!!! Because if we talk with them we may start thinking like these people!!! (He was shouting these words and just about foaming at the mouth)
A man who was a casual bible study was there that night and I saw him jump out of his seat and run to the back of the hall (his face was red and he broke out in a sweat). He looked very troubled and doubt if he ever came back--I left shortly thereafter--forever.
I don't understand why if this Organization truly wants to attract people (or keep them in) why they don't change their stategies a bit. They are becoming very uninviting--even to their own members.
you'll be getting the aug. 1 watchtower soon.
on it's rear cover, it has the following article:.
"the branch office of jehovah's witnesses in nigeria recently received a letter that, in part.
Cyber Sista:Life is tough. Hurting is a choice. Hanging around with a bunch of self-hurters won't stop the hurt.
Proplog--that's a cold shot...I didn't choose to lose 20 years of friendships and some family because of some controlling cult religion that I fell into during a troubling time in my life and--YES, it hurts--after all I am only human--are you? This site has helped me clarify some of what happened to me during those 20 years of indoctrination. Many people here have helped me to feel better about where I am at in my life, to validate my feelings and have offered some support and kindness. Unfortunately you have not.

PS...Sorry you are still angry and hurting too. I think your posts are an good indication of that and one of the reasons you are still here too.
jt, .
i normally understand everything you write, and get what you mean, but i have been trying to figure out your cheese cracker men expression?
danny.
Yes, I wondered where this term came from. During my time spent in the Org, especially at the end, I was bothered greatly to the extent that these "cheese and cracker" men offered their haphazard services playing psychiatrist to the mentally ill and marriage counselor to those truly in need of such.
