i had a phone call today from an old friend and, to be honest, it was one i had been dreading.
the lady in question used to be my pioneer partner, we got baptised on the same day, march 26th 1983, and started pioneering at the same time, and have been friends for well over 20 years.. a few years ago yvonne and her husband steve left derby and moved to south wales, but we have kept in touch, and i have visited them on several occasions, but haven't told them that i am no longer a jw, so when i got the call today i thought she was ringing me about our baptism anniversary, which would have been this sunday.
she had tried ringing my old number, which i am no longer on, and decided to try my mobile.
That's excellent. I wish a few of our old friends would wake up.

i was involved in several, starting when i was about 10 or 11 with jobs like sweeping up sawdust or picking up loose nails.
i loved it.
once, when i was about 22 we were building the kh south of santa barbara in carpinteria.
Uninformed, I don't think Nina is finding fault with the brothers who did the work. I think she's having a problem with the same thing that bothered me. The picture that was presented to the congregation and the public was one thing and the reality was something different. Whether there was anything wrong with the reality or not is irrelevant to the point. We were lied to. (Once again).
I was bothered by one other thing that seems to be irritating Nina too. There were other qualified tradespeople who should've been reimbursed for their expenses. It wasn't equal across the board. (At least it wasn't in the early to mid-eighties in our area)
By the way, the interior decorator (JW) also was paid for his "services".

got an e-mail from my brother this week - first contact he's made with me in over a year.
he just wanted to make sure i knew he was going to be in town soon and wants to see my son (not me mind you - but my son).
i'm df'd - he's an elder.. do you know what was so great about this e-mail?
I agree. It's a wonderful feeling.

AudeSapere, I'm not finding fault. I'm fully aware of the difference between volunteering and donating. I realize supplies cost money, as do tools. I'm merely expressing my uneasiness at what I personally saw. What was presented to the "brothers" up front was not the same as what was being done behind the scenes. And, if they were always buying their supplies from the same "brother's store", where was the shopping around for the best deal?

Yes, the trades that were paid were the specialized ones that were used repeatedly in quick-build after quick-build. I'm sure there were some honest ones who only asked for re-imbursement for expenses. However, I know a few who made money. It was all kept very hush-hush. We knew a couple of them personally.
I have always felt rather unsure of how to feel about this. On one hand, it's only right that if they're going to ask someone to help out repeatedly they should reimburse them. But this wasn't done with all the trades, only some. And it was kept very quiet, which made me feel that there was something shady going on.
There was an awful lot of cronyism going on.

Yep, I don't remember all that got paid. But the cabinet makers certainly did.

We've worked on a few. For the most part, we enjoyed the "quick builds". I wasn't sure what to think when I found out that some of the trades got paid, while others didn't.

my wife left me.... .
i don't understand.
after the last child was born, she told me we had to.
i don't think i've ever posted here, in ten years of being out of the religion.
well, i won't be able to say that again.
anyway, elsewhere and i just "met" online today, even though we've actually been cousins for a few decades.
Elsewhere, who's you're other cousin?

i heard last night that the canadian bethel farm has been sold.
the person told me that as a "special condition of sale" that they had to give the couple there looking after things 90 days to move out!
(law here in ontario requires 90 days notice given to tenants when a property is sold - so it's not really anything special.).
Very interesting. Let us know if you find out more.
