Welcome, Alpha. Moved to mainland China to escape the JWs - now that's quite a statement.

Hello From a Newbie
by AlphaQup2nite ini found this site randomly the other day on an unrelated search, and its nice to find a place where people can discuss a relgion that in house cannot be discussed without either being quoted mantras or a very skewed view of the world.. ok about me.. im a 24 year old taiwanese-american, and i have been raised as a jw from the age of about three to the age of 17, when i unoffically left.
i started to have doubts around age 12, but did what i was supposed to to keep mommy and daddy happy.
my parents are jws, as well as my older 1/2 sister, and my younger sister.

Ridiculous elder ideas and rules
by Juan Viejo2 inin an earlier thread, i went off topic for a moment to share excerpts from an email i received from an active sister living in the midwest usa.
she mentioned that the elders in her congregations were extremely conservative and criticized the flock for using certain colors of highlighters in their magazines.
she also reported that they were all over the sisters for wearing stylish boots or tennis shoes during the winter months.. i know that some elder groups can be very liberal, supportive and loving toward their flocks - while others are exactly opposite to the point that they become overbearing and oppressive.. what have you experienced as far as ridiculous, over-the-top rules and ideas enforced by local elders?.

I too would be fascinated to know which highlighter colors are theocratic and which are worldly - or even possibly pagan.
Too bad fred7777 isn't still here; I bet he could tell us.

Should Joe Paterno resign over the Penn State child sex abuse scandal?
by james_woods infirst, i don't know if we have had a thread on this yet - so if this is a repost, ignore appropriately.. but i am thoroughly disgusted by this developing scandal - an assistant coach at pen state is accused of multiple, repeated, child sexual offenses.
a member of the football staff exewitnesses and incident reported it to paterno (years ago, it is reported) - and paterno reported it to the athletic director.
nothing was done, nothing was reported to the authorities.. finally, the scandal broke over the weekend.. i am deeply dissapointed with paterno - this guy was one of my football heros.

Studying with a JW, need info about Watchtower doctrine.
by Resistance is Futile inmy spouse was raised as a jw but is now free from the "organization".
i've got a ton of in-laws who are still jw's, but have noticed that a lot of the younger ones are starting to slowly realize something is not right in the so called "truth".
i've been studying off and on with one of the relatives and planting little seeds of doubt.

Can a non JW attend JW Weddings?
by camicia inhi all, i've posted here before about my daughter's desire to get baptized as a jw and me attempting to prevent that, and the worst has happened: she's fallen in love and going full steam ahead with this thing.
i won't bore you with my feelings on the matter, if she's happy, i'm happy (and i really hope she's happy) but it just crossed my mind: if my daughter and her husband are jw's, will her family be able to go to the wedding?
what about socializing in general?

I asked the speaker why the congregation stayed seated, and he said 'well it's a bit like giving her worship isn't it?'
I liked your response. I would have said that if people kneeled down that would appear to be giving worship, but to stand shows respect.

Getting back little pieces of your life that they took from you.
by JonathanH ini sometimes feel like i lost so much because the first two plus decades of my life were spent in that stupid cult.
but occasionally i find a little piece of something they took from me, and i get to keep it so it's like they never took it from me at all.. tonight i got out of class (i'm in college working towards a b.s.
in engineering and/or mathematics), and it was a chilly autumn night so i decided to go to a little coffee dive downtown i hadn't been to since i went out in service and would go there for coffee breaks.

And I'm going to take as much back from those bastards as I possibly can.
Good for you, and good luck in all your endeavors.

I'm sorry, but I have to say this re Kim Kardashian (fluff thread, sort of)...
by AGuest inbut i do so to be fair (may you all have peace!):.
if she were my daughter, and kris humphries said to her what he said to ms. kim, when she voiced her concerns (again) about not wanting to move to minnesota (which she did before getting married and he "pretended" to accept), i might tell her he's the wrong guy/man, too.
no, i don't believe in divorce "just because,"... and don't know that i would tell my daughter to divorce him (she made her bed, so to say), but.... what did he say?

My ignorance of the Kardashians is only equaled by my ignorance of the Bible.

vedanta.
according to vedanta, awareness is not a product of physical processes and can be considered under four aspects.

To me the question is: Who is doing the looking through my eyes? Who is seeing red and feeling the world through these five or six senses?
Who indeed? Ramana Maharshi's central teaching was self-inquiry - Who am I? What's actually found when one looks for the "me" identity? Aside from thoughts/ideas of me can an independent and separate self be found? Look for yourself, that was his advice. In discovering its absence what remains?
