Things you shouldn't have liked as a Witness.......BUT DID!!!
by ScoobySnax inwhen you were a jw can you remember things you should've not liked but did?
i was listening to some dowloads tonight and heard "happy birthday" by stevie wonder, i remember going to a big family party when i was a kid, and my uncle who had some dj decks put this one on for me as it was my birthday (none of my dads side of the family were jw) i loved it.......good memories still of this song.. i remember getting easter eggs too, and thinking however pagan they were, they tasted bloody delicious.

TIME WILL TELL (Did you fake your hours in Field Service?)
by Terry ini know for certain that brothers in our congregation often lied about their time on field service reports.
(yes, we had to fill out quota reports back in the old days).
one brother, harry, would dump magazines in the storm drains!

If I may ask what happens nowadays if someone does only say 3-5 hours per month? I agree with Frankiespeakin that this is a a disgraceful and totally unbiblical action meant to control the cult members in the vital publications selling sector.

Overcoming Legalism and Performance Based Religion
by diamondblue1974 ini work with a devout christian which does make for interesting debates and she has allowed me to borrow yet another book.
crosby, s silent killers of faith:overcoming legalism and performance based religions), 2004.. i am not sure as to whether anyone has read it or knows about it but it goes into some detail as to legalistic and performance based religions and its affect on their followers; whilst jw's are not mentioned directly i found it came up with some startling and frighteningly similar analogies and to the jws.. for example it mentioned organisations that demonstrate a high degree of control over their followers such as what to wear, where to eat...and the affects these legalistic rules have on them.
effects such as depression, other mental health problems, and ultimately suicide in the more extreme of circumstances.. doesnt this ring any bells with anyone in terms of all that we have suffered as a jw?.

I also agree it is the demonic personality of Rutherford that we find imprinted everywhere in this org, a shouting false prophet with insane visions. In 1925-1926 he removed all vestiges of democracy in the congs destroying all the ones that defied him.No vaccinations, no doctors, no marriages, no aluminium etc

Evil WTS and the seeds of its destruction
by greendawn inthere is a saying that "evil carries within it the seed of its own destruction" and we can see this occuring with the wts and its evil leadership.
things there are going from bad to worse due to the fact that they are simply not capable of running a group like this.
being also extremely autocratic and jealous of their authority they don't accept advice on how to imrove things from anyone outside their tiny and secretive inner circle and problems never get fixed.

Rutherford, Knorr with Franz who very reluctantly delegated power to a just a dozen or so men in the 1970s who turned out to be just as incapable and pig headed.
So finally their dictatorial and conceited nature is paying them back as this org is beginning slowly to fall apart and it's unlikely to be here in 20 years from now. -

Paradox of the defeated evil
by greendawn inbefore jesus ascended to heavens he said that he had acquired all power on earth and in heaven having wrestled successfully with, and overwhelmed satan and his angels.
however the church he established had/has to make an attrocious war against that same soundly defeated enemy.
the question is if jesus defeated them once and for all why are his followers fighting a war against them all over again?

I wish to thank you for the ideas in your replies and they all seem to be part of solving the question.
The idea that I am forming gradually is that the defeat of the enemy was not at that time absolute and there was still more to be done, they surely lost all right to authority in heaven and on earth but not necessarily all their status as individuals (eg even prisoners of war have some status and rights) that's why the Son had to wait for them to become a footstool to his feet in due time.
Their refusal to accept the new realities and their constant antagonism and persecution of the Church on the earth would in time lead to their absolute negation a total stripping of all status which is equivalent to their casting down to the ground from heaven.
That defiance of theirs that was to be tolerated for a time would also tie in nicely with the requirement for humans to share in the Son's glory and power by going through their own tribulations at the hands of the demonic enemy - "fight and conquer as I did and I will grant you to sit on My Throne."
Anyway that's the formulation I came up with on studying this issue.
Jschwem I like the catholic perspective on human nature as being fundamentally good rather than evil, should people grow in a better, more fair enviroment with better education and awareness then they could easily be much nicer. Much better than the mistrustful, pessimistic and cheerless JW approach. -

A relationship with God or the organization ?
by vitty ini have been thinking about this for a while, so here goes.
when i was in the "truth" i truly believed in god, i prayed and tried to do what was right ( wt style) then when i started reading stuff and the experiences on here it didnt take very long before i knew the "truth" wasnt true after all.. so after 20 years as an adult that i spent in, it litrually took a few hours to come out.. ive asked myself how and why did this happen?
and so quickly.. at first i felt i still believed in jehovah, but if the wt was wrong, where did that leave me.

LHG, Russell who started this org was by no means an angel but it was Rutherford with his demonic personality and angel(demon)chanelling that turned it into the monstrosity that we know, within 10 years 1916-1926 he centralised all power in his hands destroying all congregations that resisted him. The autonomy and individuality present under Russell was crashed and he introduced a host of spirit poisoning doctrines including the other sheep non sense.
When I was a JW I couldn't make any suggestions on how to improve things in this org because I was not annointed, but as far as I know neither could those who were annointed if they said anything they would be marked/expelled, everything was in the hands of the Brooklyn clique, who in 1980 kicked out a lot of people from Bethel for wanting to study the bible without using WTS publications. -

In the spirit of what iiz2 said you can be working here like a dog for decades and then get thrown to the lions for all sorts of silly things your working record completely written off, after all you did what you were supposed to do so no obligations incurred on the WTS. Hmmm this smells like big business in operation here.

What "religion" type do you follow?
by FreedomFrog inhi, i'm on my "spiritual search so i want to see what "religion"/non religion you choose and why.
for example: are you christian?
pagan?

greendawn
I always chose to be christian holding on to the basic core beliefs, I certainly view all organised religion with deep suspicion and I don't want to be part of it but rather keep them at arm's length. There just may exist some decent groups out there, I don't know.
As with the JWs receiving any spiritual benefit from them always carries a terrible enough sting in the tail. And the JWs are always accusing all other religions of being Babylon the great (spiritual whores) it's a smart thing to do by an org that is the living embodiment of all that she stands for. -

The JWs to my knowledge never had any explanations on the issue, but are there any from other churches, theologians, or your own opinions, to explain this paradox? -

The Search For a Paradise Earth
by Farkel inthe one constant in life.
there is only one significant constant in life and that constant is simply: we all die.
no matter how successful we become, we will die.

I agree that their concept of a future paradise on earth is poppycock that was illogically concocted from various biblical verses whose meanings were twisted (they have no equal when it comes to twisting and misapplying biblical verses). When you come to think of it living on earth for more than a few thousand years will become extremely monotonous.

I think of this earth as a first and primitive stage to a much larger and dynamic worlds, material or spiritual it makes no difference.

They did not perceive of this wider dimension because they were not intellectually capable of it, let's not forget that none of the JW leaders ever had a proper training in religious studies so their concepts are in fact primitive, badly developped and can't stand up to the test of time something they try to conceal with the outrageous FDS-with-God and new light doctrines. They've been amateurs and charlatans since Russell's days with nothing seriously professional in their approach to religious doctrine. Remember Russell lost his court case against someone that called him a religious incompetent and charlatan.
