Ban on smoking in public places in the UK and todays news

ireland having just joined the list of countries banning smoking in public places, it has suddenly got media attention here in the uk.. as some of you know, i gave up smoking for a year and a half ago on a thread on this board.

i started again, however, i have always, as smoker and non-smoker, believed that such a ban would mean an infingement on your civil liberties and freedom.. then todays news along with a sad story about a 3 year old who died of obesity:.

obesity has now overtaken smoking as the biggest killer in the uk.. then i wonder, why is this nanny state discussing banning smoking in pubs, when they should be logically banning beer, in light of the new statistics and all the beer belies they show in these news items?

Hmm... well me and my family have had so many arguments about this. Like somebody mentioned before i'm all for no-smoking areas in bars and clubs but to ban it would seriously affect alot of people... one of them being my dad . I can enjoy the occasional cig when drinking but would ot class myself as a smoker and evry1 knows that alot of the time drinking and smoking go together. If there was an option where people could choose whether or not to inhale cigaretted smoke that would be miles better and the best of both worlds. God i don't know how my dad would cope if he wasn't allowed a smoke, he wud hate the idea of having to interupt his boozy afternoon to step outside! The one thing that i do hate when u go out though is the smell left on your clothes when u get home , guess that wud be one advantage but that aside i think it would be wrong....

Daughter Moving On From JW BF . . .

my daughter has been accepting of my intervening in her relationship with an unbaptized jw.

although still sad at times, she is determined to finish high school (this is her senior year) and go on to college.

(carl, her x-boyfriend, is a hs drop out and aspires to get a job at guitar center and eventually get certified for smog inspecting automobiles.

Well first of all i have to say what a lovely looking girl, how old is your daughter then? I've always wanted to have a prom and get dressed up all pretty but my school is too small for us to ever have one - ah well i can always dream! Hey, your daughter will get over this boy..... eventually so long as she has a nice group of friends to help her through.

Well i have to say it i love men, i love my dad,granddad, best friends, brothers and my beautiful boyfriend!! It's like the famous saying always says 'can't live with them and can't live without them' - thats just so true about men. I love everybody

JW stabs husband; he refuses blood

the australian jw couple were married only 10 days prior in bali, but on saturday something went awry.

a dispute arose between the two and she stabbed him in the back and arm.

in critical condition and in need of blood, he refused.

Hi... and welcome !!

I belive that we are the same age. I know what you mean when you say that there are strict rules amongst Jw when it comes to sexuality.I know that if my mother was to find out that one of her children was gay or even bisexual she would freak. She told us that we would never be able to bring our boyfriend/girlfriend back to the house. Now that doesn't really affect us because we are all 'straight' - if thats how you put it. But it is still a very annoying thing to know.

And in answer to your question.... weare not all ex-Jw's. Well i personally am not (yet!) - like you i attended the meetings but with my mother because my dad was not religious. I haven't gone for months now and have even stopped attending the group meetings on a tuesday. I don't know what to belive - if there is a God or whether science really is the cause for us being here. Both seem inconclusive to me. But it's good to hear from you, alot of the people on here are very nice and will offer you some great advice.If you ever need to talk,feel free to pm me.

Hmm...well personally i like the brown colour better but that's probably because i think that's the best picture (you look alot younger on that 1). But both auburn and black look ok too.

abortion...Do parents have the rights to know..

Well... this is something that i was trying to find out about a little ago and see if it was possible for a girl under the age of censent (16) to have an abortion without telling her parents.I know that it's possible for someone to go to a clinic and get protection, the pill, and a disease check.

Being around the age of the girl i believe that we should be ablt to have an abortion confidentially. Iknow that if i was ever pregnant i wouldnot be able to tell my mother. Hell, if my mother even knew i was having sex she would kick my ass. She keeps giving me the lecture of 'how there is plenty of time' etc. but is very naive to the fact that i am no longer a virgin.

It's not the fact that my parents are abusive, don't listen etc. cos thats not true. They are lovely people, i couldn't ask for better but they would not be able to understand me if that happened.I would prefer to make my own decision and not be judged. The only problem with this is when problems occur afterwards that could be very dangerous.

I'mstill in favour of confidentiality though!!
