NewSense, that's interesting. How do you know about that, is there an information source that isn't racist? Are there any non-Islamic countries that practice it now?

A Cup of Urine A Day Will Keep The Doctor Away
by minimus inaccording to yahoo news, if you drink a cup of urine a day, you can get rid of dandruff, graying hair can turn black, sinus trouble can vanish and even cancer can be cured!
in thailand, buddhist monks do this regularly and swear by it!.....what do you think?

The labs use the urine of post-menopausal nuns to prepare the pharmaceutical extract Pergonal, in order to stimulate fertility.
I'm just wondering how they got the post-menopausal nuns to cooperate. That's a conversation I'd like to have heard.
What I wonder is, could it possibly still be healthy if you smoke, drink, and eat lots of sugar and junk food? I mean, do you have to have a really healthy diet to start with? (This is assuming you don't accept the conventional Western medical view that it's just an all around unhealthy thing to do under any circumstances.)

Visions..
by StinkyPantz inyou have several vivid visions.
in the visions a person/entity tells you that s/he is god.
when this happens you are awake and you have not deliberately ingested any drugs.

If something like that happened to me I would try to just let it be what it is. I wouldn't try to explain it to myself as being God or a hallucination. If it happened often, I certainly wouldn't go to a psychiatrist, or a psychologist, because their training is to be completely skeptical and dismissive about mystical experiences. I might go to a therapist to help me deal with it. But I'd make sure that I found someone who could accept it as being an experience and not just a symptom of mental illness.
There do seem to be people who are more prone to mystical experiences, like all the famous ones, Eckhardt and Swedenborg and Julian of Norwich and Joan of Arc and Abbess Hildegard of Bingen. Some seem a lot more functional than others. Swedenborg was a really successful person, invented all sorts of things and hobnobbed with the great and the good. Eckhardt did okay but eventually got nobbled by the church for preaching heresy, Julian of Norwich seemed completely bonkers, and we all know what happened to Joan of Arc.

The concept of sin?
by El blanko inok, here is one that jabs into my mind occasionally.
the concept of 'sin' and the fallen state of man is rather profound and used to blow my mind, especially when paul broke down the concept when writing about the struggle with the fleshly state.
i could relate to those words and it was originally one of the main reasons i moved towards the scriptures (that, and the carrot of living forever of course

I think the concept of sin begins with our fundamental imperfection. It's just that some religions think it's really bad to be imperfect and screw up and they call it sin, and other's think it's all just part of the flow.
I have problems with the idea of salvation through works OR grace because I can't see how any amount of forgiveness can erase our acts or relieve us of either guilt or payment (in the sense of restoring the balance). Which is sort of what Sirona said.

how we get trapped!
by the mole inmy dad and i spoke over lunch the other day about our religion.
he told me that he bumped into two of my cousins who are pioneers at the auburn congregation..he told them he was disapointed and was not invited to their party...after he told me his conversation with them he repeatedly kept on saying "the truth".
i finally corrected him and told him that was one of the ways to suppress him buy using words like that to inflict guilt and that there is no other truth when there is.

I've been out for 30 years, and I still have those words and phrases floating around in my head. Maybe because I was raised in the Borg, I'll never get rid of them. Recently I found myself wondering if one of the children of my JW relatives had "fallen away from the Truth". It gave me a very strange feeling, like I'd just slipped back into my slot for a second and all the years since hadn't happened.

"We can assure you or others that our policy was followed," Brown said. "Child abuse is a crime, so that should be reported to authorities."
I notice they don't say "We reported this crime to the authorities". They say "our policy was followed", not mentioning that their policy is only report when legally required (and, imo, when they are sure to be caught if they don't report). And they say "it should be reported", which sounds like it's really nothing to do with them personally. All written in the passive to avoid responsibility. BITE ME, YOU WEASELS! This makes me furious. Why can't they just be NORMAL for five minutes? A family goes up in flames and all they can think of is covering their asses. It's not human.

what is the real reason for condemning anyone to eternal death or torment?
by zen nudist inconsider that a real all powerful god could wipe out everyones memory instead of everyone.... guess that it did not occur.
to him in noah's day?.
if everyone had to start over and could be educated with the troof, why condemn them for anything done prior to that moment?.

I believe that the idea of punishment is a completely human construct. It seems to be part of our nature and so it probably has some function in our survival. But I don't think that god, if there is one, and whatever he-she-it might be, has any interest whatever in any kind of punishment or reward. If he did (if he exists) then clearly the good would thrive and the wicked would suffer. And I haven't seen any sign of that at all.

What in Heaven's Name is Going On!
by Blueblades inin a time of fear and mass insecurity, dark religious themes have found an eager audience, not a new one , but, a revealed one.. judgment day, armageddon and the revelation are among the jolly themes now inspiring television shows, hollywood movies, books, even broadway style musicals.. the passion of the christ.
left behind novels.
the daughter of god.

Before Y2K I was surprised how many people thought there would be some kind of apocalypse, caused by computer breakdowns or, some people thought, by god. And what surprised me even more is that they seemed rather excited about it, although they said they were worried and depressed. I thought about this, and my theory (which is mine) is that some people would rather like the world to end. Maybe because they have always been unhappy and and don't really want to be here and don't know how to change their lives for the better, or maybe because they think the world is such a rotten place that it deserves to end.
Nobody ever confirmed this theory, because I never asked. I thought it would be rude and they wouldn't admit it anyway.
