  How Were The Elders In Your Hall?

  were they pretty decent men?.

  liberals or extremists??.

  did they try to be "good shepherds" or were they real assh@les?.

  Most were pretty compassionate and they understood what life was all about because they had families and they were good providers financially.

  The problem elders were the elders from Bethel.

  They were rigid, prodominately unmarried and childless, they knew nothing about kids, teen agers or martial strife.

  They ruled with an iron fist and they were very much against higher education.

  Fortunately the local elders out numbered the Bethel elders, so we were consisted to be liberal by dubs standards.

  Holidays - How do you feel?

  as holiday time approaches, many of us ex dubs have mixed feeling going on in our head.. are you happy and excited because now you can celebrate the holidays with family (maybe) and friends, or are you depressed or just ambivialent about the whole thing?.

  it took my a few years just to feel comfortable wishing someone a happy holiday, and a few more years before i actually celebrated a holiday.. now i celebrate every holiday, and i am always excited about the event, although i don't place any spiritually/religious meaning towards the event and i just enjoy the chance to socialize with family and friends.. what about you?.

  Happy HHolidays to you guys as well.

  I just stated on another thread, that I had a girlfriend whose father thought it was weird that I didn't celebrate the holidays with my family.

  When I final came clean and told him about my JW past, he never liked me and warned his daughter that I was not husband material.

  He was right although I and his daughter disagreed with him at the time.

  I eventually married another ex dub, it made everything much easier... no explaining about our neurosis's.

  How long before you tell people you were once a Jehovah's Witness?

  most of the people i've met since i left don't know that i spent years of my life as a door knocker.. i have very dear friends who don't know.

  i've even had lovers who didn't know.

  my last partner knew, and found it vaguely amusing.. i guess i find it deeply embarrassing, although over the years it's become easier to mention it.

  I tell almost no one about my JW past.

  Before I got married, I would only tell the women I dated, because I just didn't know how to respond to holidays.

  I wanted them to know that I wasn't uninterested in holidays, i just didn't know the customs of what to do....

  They were always pretty understanding and helped me along especially when visiting with their family and friends.

  One girlfriends dad though it was odd that I didn't celebrate the holidays with my family .. he never liked me after I came clean about my past.

  most disturbing movie scene you've seen?

  i haven't seen this topic on here so i thought i'd.... hmmm, maybe it's because it's just too disturbing?

  to me, the scene in saving private ryan - the two soldiers in the small upstairs room fighting hand to hand to the death (by stabbing).

  i think that is the most disturbing thing i've seen on screen and there were plenty just in that film alone.

  I can think of a few.

  1. I agree with littlerockguy - Last House on The Left. The voilence is too disturbing.

  2. The rape of the little girl in "Time to Kill."

  3. I don't remember the name of the movie but it came out several years ago, it starred Sally Fields and her teenage daughter (who had a stutter) was raped and murdered while Sally Fields heard everything over the phone. I believe the rapist was Keifer Sutherland.

  I have no hard facts either, but I suspect that men a Dfed less often because, if they held any position in the congo, they may have seen wrong acts sweep under the rug. If they are not given special treatment, the BOE may fear that the brother may spill the beans about bad stuff going on in the congo.

  He could potentially take others down with him.

  This is a strong incentive to keep every thing Status Quo and not punish the brother.

  But I also think that is perceived that women show repentance just because they have shed a few tears at a JC meeting. Compared to men who do no cry easily, some would wrongly conclude that he is not repentant because of the lack of emotion. Therefore, teh woman doesn't get Dfed, but the guy does.

  How powerful were our mothers as JWs?

  newboy started a wonderful topic about jw fathers, but thinking back my mother had more power.

  her entire family was jw's and had amazng influence through the years, including over my elder father.. her own mother was a convert during rutherford's early years out of the 7th day adventist religion.

  my mom and her brothers and sisters were some of the ones that wore the plackards that religion was a snare and a racket.

  My mother had an unbeliveing husband, but she was a pioneer, so she had a lot of clout in the congo. Even to this day, my mom is still considered the "pillar of stength" in the congo.

  At home she basically ruled the house and made me play favorites between her and my dad. She would say at the drop of a hat that my dad was going to be destroyed and I had better listen to her or the same would happen to me.

  I think that being a dub, made my mom feel like she was the "spiritual head" and thus she was not subservant to my dad.

  She was sumbissive in areas she wanted to be, and when it was against her wishes, she became the head of the house.

  It amazes me that my dad stayed married to her for all these years.
