anyone here ever go on a cruise with a large group of JW's?
by PaNiCAtTaCk inive been on two cruises in the early 90's with large amounts of witnesses.
one cruise we had around 85 and the other 175. one night on the larger jw cruise there were 50 or so of us watching this comedian.
he started getting a little crude using words like penis so we all got up at the same time and walked out during his act.

I have friends who went on several cruises out of NY in the 90's.
They loved it but always some one would come back to the KH and complian about some sort of loose conduct by some couple.
MY wife and 2 other couples are going on a cruise in May.
It will be very interesting because one couple is faded as is my wife and I and the other couple is active.
What ever happens it won't cramp my style.
I am going to smoke, drink and gamble.

Wow, I my hat's off to you man, you are wise beyond your years.
I do have a few questions - at 18 are your financially able to stand on your own without the help of your family?
If you plan on attending college, and I hope you are, will your plan to DA yourself derail these plans?
Are you prepared to have a different, perhaps stranded relationship with your father after you are DA'd?
Will you still live in your parents house even though you are DA'd?
I don't mean to throw water on your plans, nor do I expect you to live a lie, but if your actions by DAing your self will adversely affect your future LIFE, you may want to postpone your decision until you have an effective escape plan (which you may already have).
Good luck no matter what route you chose.

Did you know of any JW elders or JW pioneers that were "racist"?
by booker-t ini know this might sound like a question from "la-la" land but as a black ex-jws most of the white jw's that i did have contact with were really nice.
i was talking to a hispanic ex-jws the other day and he was telling me of some of the racist experiences he had as a jw.
i did not contradict him but i never experienced racism from caucasian jw's.

I believe that there are some racist dubs jut as there are racit non dub. The dub are jut a reflection of our society.
I will state this point.
As a black man in corporate America, I have always seen two things go hand in hand. If a person is a sexist, than they are a racist a well.
Therefore, when you think about it, is there an organization more sexist than the dubs, I think NOT. Therefore racism in dubdom, does not surprise me.

My mom isn't the best cook, probably because she was rushing to get to a meeting or field service or a bible study.
She does have some really good dishes, Fried Chicken, Macoroni salad, Mac and cheese, collard greens and a favorite of mine "Chittlings" - you southerners know what that is.
For dessert, her apple cobbler is renowned with in the NY dub circle.

The WBTS really is a dangerous organization

it has been well documented that some extreme cults have be able to isolate their memebers and then have them kill themselves because of their beliefs.. the dubs has always looked at these cults as being mislead by the devil and the dubs would never do anything as drastic a mass suicide.. however as a child i remember thinking that at the begining of the great tribulation, the fds might tell us to run, or congragate somewhere isolated and we would actually leave with on the clothes on our back, and anyone not heeding this warning would be killed at the battle of "armefogotten".. if the fds could get the dubs to leave their home and familes, bascially their lives behind, isn't it just a small stretch to think that a desicion to end ones earthly life could be the next request?.
also remember that particularily the jim jones event, some members had to be physically forced to drink the kool - aid while others freely drank.. does anyone else think that because of the power that the wbts has over it memebers, if they decided to do something drastic, many of the members would just blindly comply?

A New Trend for JW Baby Boomers?
by NYCkid ini'm sure this topic has come up before but i'm new here :-) since many of us are offspring of the baby boomer generation or of a generation earlier, i've noticed a trend.
my parents and their siblings who largely grew up as witnesses are now entering or have entered retirement age.
although my parents were generally hard working and responsible people, they have little retirement savings.

Welcome NYCkid,
I am from NY as well and my parents are in their 60's.
Fortunately my dad was never a dub so he made sure that he and my mom would have a saving plan or cushion for retirement, however my mom just sees it as another way that Jehovah has provided for her so that she can poineer.
I also help my folks out financially as well and will continue to do so.
Every now and then it does bother me that those elders who critized me for going to college and pursuing a career, now compilment my parents on the material things I provide for them, and complain that their children never help them out.

JW's on TV
by Bumble Bee inrecently i've seen more jw's on tv.
first it was jayla on america's next top model - described as "the rebel jw".. the other day i saw a psa on omni tv about diabetes and it pictured an older man sitting by his piano and there was a "sing praises to jehovah" displayed.. yesterday i saw a program on the lifenetwork about jackie - a jw woman that had breast re-construction after cancer.
it showed her attending a meeting at the kh, (gag alert) - everybody was hugging and kissing each other, singing etc, showed her reading her nwt, and going out in service using the standard greeting - "hi, my name is jackie and this is my friend pat - we'll be very brief - we're just talking to the people in your neighbourhood today - latest wt and awake yadda yadda yadda".

As JWs on the FS did you meet people with severe problems?
by greendawn inas a jw on the field service did you ever find people that were afflicted by very difficult or even dramatic situations and problems?
was it possible to help them?

As a teenager I remember while in field service with an elder, we knocked on the door of a family who were dirt poor. Their house was dirty and it smelled. The woman of the house mentioned that her husband left her and the kids and they had no money or food and they were going to approach Welfare for financial help.
The elder told the householder that spiritual food was as important as physical food and that if she accepted a bible study "God" would provide the rest.
I then offered her the magazines for free (back when they costed 10 cents) and and gave her 5 dollars, all I had in my pocket.
After we left the door, the elder counselled me that if she really wanted to learn about Jehovah, she would have found 20 cents and paid for the mags, and giving her the 5 bucks was a mistake because now she would think that all dubs would give her a donation.
Of course I was very disappointed by his comments, but it taught me an important lesson: The Dubs only care about the success of the Borg. Anything else is unimportant and helping people is not part of their mission.
If you can't make a significant contribution to the borg either by money or your body, they couldn't care less about you.
