The official "Reminisce about your most hated convomition site" thread
by B_Deserter ini cannot think of any worse place to have a convention than the pontiac silverdome.
for years my family went to south bend, indiana to avoid it.
then when south bend stopped having conventions (probably having something to do with the catholics not appreciating the brothers slamming the religion that financed, built, and hosts the lovely arena they were using), we tried madison, wisconsin for a year, before finally trudging back over to silverdome.

I can think of three horrible assembly sites.
1. Veterans Stadium in Philly. I agree with NVRGNBK. We lived in NY so we drove every day to he assembly. I got 2nd degree burns on my nose and cheeks as an attendant in the parking lot. And I am black, you should have seen some of the white guys...
2. The meadowlands NJ - It rained almost everyday and this is an outdoor stadium. Also the temperature dropped into the 50's one day and many dubs left early because of the cold. Of course there was a special needs talk that was given a week later. reprimanding the dubs for leaving early. I knew of one couple whose 2 year old caught pneumonia after the assembly because her parents refused to leave, and the child was poor dressed.
3. Yankee Stadium NY- I don't care what any one says, that stadium in the 60's and 70's was horrible. Steep stairs, hard seats, not enough bathroms, and totally exposed to all the elements. And remember back then the assemblies lasted at least 5 days.

I work in the insurance industry, and depending on the circumstances, this would be considered insurance fraud.
Here is the process.
You get 3 estimates on the cost to repair your roof.
The insurance company cuts you a check that will cover the cost of the roof. It will usually be an amount that is somewhere in between the most expensive and the least exoensive.
If you did not submit a bid from the dubs (WWW) then you have basically lied to the insurance company about the amount needed to repair your roof and the company you would use.
Most insurance companies only want you to use reputable contractors, who also have adquate insurance, so that if the repairs are faulty and you need to submit another claim because of the error or poor worksmanship of the contractor, your insurance company wants to have the option of"subrogating" or legally going after your contractor to pay them back the money they paid you to repair the roof.
As the homeowner, you are obligated to get approval for the contractor you are using ( from the insurance company) to repair your property prior to the work being done. Some inusrance companies will waive this requirement because of the loss amount of the claim or because the are undated with calaims). That is why you are asked to submit estimates. They are not only evaulationg the price, but they are checking on the past work history of your contractor.
If you are given a check for the amount needed to repair your property and you actually use considerable less to do the repairs, technically, you have received a profit from you accident/occurrence.
The purpose of insurance is to put you back in the same position you were in prior to the accident, you should not be in a financially better position then you were prior to the accident.
This is fraudulent, and is a crime.
Any monies not used for the repair work, is considered a profit.

$336 million credit card settlement
by littlerockguy ini got a notice in the mail today taht i am eligible to receive a court-approved refund of fees charged to my eligible credit/debit card.
the fees were based on foreign transactions, including both purchases and atm withdrawals from feb 1996 to november 2006. the only places i traveled out of the country during that time was in canada around 1999 and when i went to denmark, sweden and london last year.. did anybody else who has visa, mastercard and or diners club and travel much receive one of these notices in the mail?
the website explains more www.ccfsettlement.com.

I got the notice also.
I Travel out of the country a few times over the last 10 years, I'm just not sure how much I actually spent.
There is a easy way to claim your refund if your spending was under $2500.
This would automatically give you a refund of $25.
I know I spend more than $2500, but proving it at this point might be difficult.
It doesn't seem like a scam, but you never know.
I would proceed with caution.

Do You "Trust" The Police?
by minimus inif the police say such and such a thing, do you tend to automatically believe it?

Good question.
As a black man, I have what I would call a healthy distrust of cops.
I try to compensate for that by being straight forward and respectful when dealing with cops.
It also helps that I have not committed any crimes other than speeding or traffic voilation.
Cops have a tough job and they make split second decisions that can put their life at risk as well as your own.
Its a job I would never want for my self, so I try to put myself in their position and comply as much as possible.
It is however very distrubing to me that many innocent people have been shot many times by several cops. Where they afraid for their own safety or was there racial prejudice involved? I raise this point because here in the NY area, the victims lately have been black and the cops were predominately white.
I don't have an answer here, but I think that more training in dealing with a crisis situation and a better job of evaluating cops to make sure that the do not have any personal issues that may affect their ability to be objective in a tense situation would make a difference.
I know that black men are not the only people who are affected by bad cops, it just seems that recently the results of these confrontations has resulted in unarmed black men being killed.

It's scary with some gore.
I would compare it to the gore in the movie "Carrie".
Not the kind of gore you see in slasher flicks.

Do they still go ahead and disfellowship if you threaten them back?
by ThomasCovenant insupposing local elders were to approach me with a view to a 'judicial committee' and subsequent disfellowshipping.
law # 1 i believe everything the 'society' says.. law # 2 i also believe everything the 'society' has ever said in the past even when it contradicts law # 1.. law # 3 i also believe everything the 'society' will ever say in the future even when it contradicts law # 1 and law # 2. law # 0 (zeroth law) i believe law # 1, 2 and 3 all at the same time.. please don't disfellowship me.. .
if you carry out this action i will take it upon myself to make the local jw's life uncomfortable.

Thomas, just think through whatever course of action you may take. remember, every action has a reaction and a consequence. Are you prepared to deal with the fall out that may occur, if you go in attack mode against the Borg?
I don't know if you have children, but if you do, how will they be affected?
Always remember that you have already won, you now know the truth and you got out.

What a great letter.
If you every feel that you haven't accomplished enough with your life, just reread that letter and you will know that your greatest accomplishment, was getting your son to be a free thinker and not mislead by that dangerous cult.

Does anyone remember that picture of the scarlet-colored beast WITH crowns?
by AlmostAtheist ini got my history a little mixed up in a post earlier tonight, trying to recall an error in a watchtower picture a few years ago.
the picture was of the scarlet-colored wild beast, but it had crowns.
the bible says this beast doesn't have crowns, it's the other one that has the crowns.

I don't remember the post, but the original picture you are refering to appeared in the Babylon the Great book.
We studied it in the bookstudy back in the 70's . I think it was a red colored book. If it wasn't in that book in may have been in the "Daniel book" . It was a light green book that we also studied at the book study.
Blondie, Scully, do you guys remember these books?
