I guess even unknown holidays are out, but really can someone have a serious argument against this since it's not serious to begin with? Besides it kind of makes fun of Christmas, although I could see someone potentially complaining that the aluminum pole is like a phallus..

Sounds like the name assignment could easily be an automated process, and something like this site could do the job:

This is a pretty big forum, so instead of one person organizing everybody what about if people work with small groups, and so a few people who may be okay trusting one person can just have them do it? If it's big not as many people are going to have the time to do all the organizing anyway so that addresses two concerns.

Aside from something organized, how about just choosing someone that you might want to give something to? It doesn't even have to be any thing, someone artistic might make something that can be sent digitally, although I seem to remember there is also a way to send stuff if you just have their email address, and the merchant would simply shoot the person an email or it might be done through say the registry on Amazon or whatever.

Most people don't approach discussions with much psychological awareness, not to mention online psychology which can be a study in itself. Therefore this is pretty much inevitable with online communication. Some people will continue to believe in the primacy of challenging specific beliefs rather than frame it in terms of peoples state of mind. While it certainly raises questions in the minds of some, a lot of people who benefit from that information may do so not because they view these forums as a place for social interaction, but they just come to get the information and thought about it themselves. In that case the work of addressing beliefs may be relevant, but you couldn't say so-and-so got this person out - in fact that kind of social interaction may be counterproductive.
Strictly from an informational perspective, then, you gotta wonder what is the signal to noise ratio when it's presented in terms of forum discussions? While some may be heartfelt personal experiences and the reader may identify with those views, at other times it might just drown out the essential info too.

The camera has created a culture of celebrity; the computer is creating a culture of connectivity. As the two technologies converge--broadband tipping the Web from text to image; social-networking sites spreading the mesh of interconnection ever wider-- the two cultures betray a common impulse. Celebrity and connectivity are both ways of becoming known. This is what the contemporary self wants. It wants to be recognized, wants to be connected: It wants to be visible. If not to the millions, on Survivor or Oprah, then to the hundreds, on Twitter or Facebook. This is the quality that validates us, this is how we become real to ourselves--by being seen by others. The great contemporary terror is anonymity. If Lionel Trilling was right, if the property that grounded the self in Romanticism was sincerity, and in modernism was authenticity, then in postmodernism it is visibility.

Any East Bay (CA) JWs?
by witness2witness inhey, is there anyone here who is (or has been) a member of the brentwood/oakley/discovery bay congregations?
.
i could use some help in regards to a jw i have been encountering.

You can try asking on the Nor Cal thread, some people did not say where they are so there may be more people form the East Bay.
What kind of help are you looking for? I mean does it require in-person contact for some reason?

What is the meaning of true spirituality?
by ele_lux ini was trying to figure out the answer to this question when i came across my notes of a talk by the do in the 09 circuit convention.
he said the world defined "spirituality" however it would suit them; according to their own religion.
he gave example definitions of spirituality (being in touch with nature, spiritism, going to church and reading the bible, etc.

Of course you're right in that JWs are likely to perceive it that way, but then again they are not likely to try meditation in the first place. If someone was still that deeply in mentally it would make no sense to recommend meditation as a formal practice. But anyone can and do spend some quiet time by themselves alone at least once in a while, and if someone was ready to take responsibility for their own mind then they will naturally be inclined to do that - rather than blame any negative experience on external forces.

Umm, pain surfacing does not necessarily mean any kind of acting out. After all, if you are remembering something painful you're not necessarily doing anything that looks weird right? That's quite a leap.
Put it this way, would you know if any feeling you have is just something from your past or if it's a demon? It would seem like you yourself would know your mind well enough to make that distinction, and if you don't the question seems to be what has gotten you to the point where you don't even trust your own mind, and are convinced that you don't even know yourself well enough that way?
