Would you do a mind-meld with other people? Who? Any conditions?
by Markfromcali injust for fun, i guess the idea of the vulcan mind-meld is the most popular idea, although for a good visual you might think of the mental equivalent of odos people from deep space nine.
for the non-scifi geek there was that part in cocoon that might be a better reference, and that recent episode of american dad.. anyhow it's pretty much in the subject title of the post.
any filters?

What if you invited JWs to celebrate Festivus?
by Markfromcali ini guess even unknown holidays are out, but really can someone have a serious argument against this since it's not serious to begin with?
besides it kind of makes fun of christmas, although i could see someone potentially complaining that the aluminum pole is like a phallus...

Are there many 3D models of scientific theory?
by Markfromcali innot sure if there are many scientists here or those who are theoretically oriented, but i'm just wondering if there's much out there, regardless of discipline that illustrates things beyond a 2d chart on paper.
for example here's just a basic outline of how something related to mind control might be put together: the vertical axis (z in cartesian coordinates) could be used for different levels of influence, anywhere from use of language and social factors to sensory stuff, maybe direct brain stim even.
one axis on the horizontal plane (y) could illustrate breadth, that being the different types of situations anywhere from religious, political, commercial contexts.

Mind Control related info
by Markfromcali inso i thought it'd be nice to have a thread that would have it all in one place, here's an interesting bit about it showing up in architecture:.
when we walk into a gothic cathedral, for example, we invite the building to inspire us.
we understand and accept that the huge, pointed arches symbolically reach to the heavens ... when we enter, the external world disappears and we are transported into another.

Post-symbolic communication
by Markfromcali inwe are virtuosos at spoken language.
adults speak with what seems like no effort at all, even though everyday chats might be the most complicated phenomena ever observed.
i see no reason why new virtuosities in communication could not appear in the future, though it's hard to specify a timeframe.. suppose you're enjoying an advanced future implementation of virtual reality and you can cause spontaneously designed things to appear and act and interact with the ease of sentences pouring forth during an ordinary conversation today.. imagine a means of expression that is a cross between the three great new art forms of the 20th century: jazz improvisation, computer programming, and cinema.

Groupthink and mob mentality online
by Markfromcali inscientific american article.
jaron lanier rails against the social trends being fostered by the internet--in particular its power to stifle creativity and grant anonymity as well as encourage groupthink and a lynch-mob mentality.
