Would you bend over to pick up a penny on the ground? Or maybe a nickel?

yesterday evening i was taking a long walk, and then i saw a nickel (5 cents) on the sidewalk, so i didn't even bother to pick it up.

then walking away i was surprised that i didnt even pick it up.

i know that i would never pick up a penny, but a nickel, usually i do pick that up.

Opening Comments

Feeling low, feeling blue, the WTS is now going to tell you in 20 paragraphs that Jehovah (not Jesus loves you). The problem is that people are abused and used at the KH and then thrown away, by humans not God. The humans that head up the WTS would like you to think they speak for God, don't believe them.

For any agnostics or atheists who read the review, my apologies. My husband sang this for me today, a fond memory of a happier time.

I call to you, O God, but you never answer; and when I pray, you pay no attention. You are treating me cruelly; you persecute me with all your power." The man who spoke those words was in great anguish, and no wonder! He had lost his livelihood, a freakish disaster had claimed the lives of his children, and now he was beset by a debilitating illness. The man's name was Job, and his harrowing ordeal is recorded in the Bible for our benefit. Job 30:20, 21, Today's English Version.

Another OT example--Job

I call to you, O God, but you never answer; and when I pray, you pay no attention.

Can you imagine going to an elder and asking whether God hears your prayers?

1. You haven't asked for the right things.
2. You are sinning secretly.
3. You aren't asking in the right way.
4. You haven't asked often enough.

2 Job's expressions might make it appear that he had turned against God, but that was not the case. Job simply spoke from the depths of his distressed heart. (Job 6:2, 3) He did not know that Satan was the cause of his trials, so he mistakenly concluded that God had left him. At one point, Job even said to Jehovah: "Why do you conceal your very face and regard me as an enemy of yours?"* Job 13:24. (* Similar statements were made by righteousDavid and by the faithful sons of Korah.-Psalm 10:1; 44:24.)

He did not know that Satan was the cause of his trials.

Have you ever read the comments of Job's three "friends"? You might find them very similar to the "encouraging" words of many at the KH.

Do you let the WTS or their representatives tell you how God feels about you?

3 Today, many of Jehovah's people suffer unrelenting hardships as a result of wars, political or social upheavals, natural disasters, old age, sickness, dire poverty, and governmental bans. Likely you too are undergoing trials of one kind or another. At times, you may think that Jehovah is concealing his face from you. You well know the words of John 3:16: "God loved the world so much that he gave his only-begotten Son." Still, when you are suffering with no relief in sight, you may wonder: `Does God really love me? Does he notice what I am going through? Does he care about me as an individual?'

Unrelenting hardships--was your trial mentioned there?

Does God really love me?--Where's Jesus?

Does he care about me as an individual?--more importantly who cares about you as an individual at the KH?

4 Consider what happened to the apostle Paul. "There was given me a thorn in the flesh, an angel of Satan, to keep slapping me," he wrote, adding: "I three times entreated the Lord that it might depart from me." Jehovah heard his entreaties. Nevertheless, he indicated to Paul that he would not intervene by means of a miraculous solution. Instead, Paul would have to rely on God's power to help him cope with his "thorn in the flesh."* (2 Corinthians 12:7-9) (* The Bible does not state just what Paul's "thorn in the flesh" was. It might have been a physical affliction, such as poor eyesight. Or the expression "thorn in the flesh" might refer to false apostles and others who challenged Paul's apostleship and ministry.-2 Corinthians 11:6, 13-15; Galatians 4:15; 6:11.) Like Paul, you may be experiencing a certain ongoing trial. Perhaps you wonder, `Does the fact that Jehovah appears not to have done anything about my trial mean that he is unaware of my situation or that he does not care about me?' The answer is a resounding no! Jehovah's deep concern for each of his faithful servants is underscored by what Jesus told his apostles shortly after he selected them. Let us see how his words can encourage us today.

Thorn in the flesh--what is yours? Do the elders believe it is a real problem, or just your imagination, exaggeration, even a fabrication of yours to avoid your "spiritual responsibilities"?

"Have No Fear"-Why?

5 The apostles received extraordinary powers from Jesus, including "authority over unclean spirits, in order to expel these and to cure every sort of disease and every sort of infirmity." Yet, this did not mean that their course would be free from trials and hardships. On the contrary, Jesus described in detail some of the things that were to befall them. However, he urged them: "Do not become fearful of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; but rather be in fear of him that can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna."-Matthew 10:1, 16-22,28.

This did not mean that their course would be free from trials and hardships.

So that means if you have troubles in life, it doesn't mean God or Jesus have abandoned you or that you have a secret sin in your life.

6 To help his apostles understand why they need not be fearful, Jesus went on to give two illustrations. He said to them: "Do not two sparrows sell for a coin of small value? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground without your Father's knowledge. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Therefore have no fear: you are worth more than many sparrows." (Matthew 10:29-31) Note that Jesus linked not being fearful in the face of adversity with being confident that Jehovah cares for us personally. Evidently, the apostle Paul had such confidence. He wrote: "If God is for us, who will be against us? He who did not even spare his own Son but delivered him up for us all, why will he not also with him kindly give us all other things?" (Romans 8:31, 32) No matter what challenges you face, you too can be sure that Jehovah cares for you personally as long as you remain loyal to him. This will become even more evident as we take a closer look at Jesus' admonition to his apostles.

Being confident that Jehovah cares for us personally--and without all the conditions the WTS places on him and Jesus.

As long as you remain loyal to him--which is not the same as being loyal to the WTS. Only if the WTS is loyal to God and Jesus then you can be loyal to the WTS.

The Value of a Sparrow

7 Jesus' word pictures effectively describe Jehovah's concern for each of His servants. Consider first the matter of the sparrows. In Jesus' day, sparrows were used for food, but because they were a threat to crops, they were largely viewed as pests. Sparrows were so abundant and cheap that two could be purchased for less than the equivalent of five cents in modern values. Twice that amount would buy not four but five sparrows--the extra bird being thrown in, as if it had no value at all!-Luke 12:6.

Pests--sparrows--I've heard that the elders label certain JWs "pests" and they certainly have the worth of spiritual sparrows, not worth their time.

8 Think, too, about the size of this common bird. Compared to many other birds, even a full-grown sparrow is quite small. Yet, the Greek word translated "sparrows" at Matthew 10:29 specifically refers to little sparrows. Jesus evidently wanted his apostles to imagine a bird of the very least significance. As one reference work says, "Jesus cites a very small bird and uses a diminutive even of that!"

There are many common sparrows in the KH; single women, single mothers, older people, poor people, less educated people. How much attention do they get from the elders?

9 Jesus' analogy of the sparrows makes a powerful point: What seems valueless to humans is important to Jehovah God. Jesus further emphasized this truth by adding that a little sparrow would not "fall to the ground" without Jehovah's notice.* (* Some scholars suggest that the sparrow's falling to the ground may allude to more than its dying. They say that the original-language phrase may refer to a bird's alighting on the ground for food. If this is the case, it would imply that God notices and cares for the bird in its daily activities, not just when it dies.-Matthew 6:26.) The lesson is clear. If Jehovah God takes note of the smallest and most insignificant bird, how much more will he be concerned about the plight of a human who has chosen to serve him!

What seems valueless to humans (elders) is important to Jehovah God (Where's Jesus?).

Who is valued in your congregation? Who do you know?

10 In addition to his illustration about the sparrows, Jesus said: "The very hairs of your head are all numbered." (Matthew 10:30) This brief but profound statement amplifies the point of Jesus' illustration about the sparrows. Consider: The average human head has about 100,000 strands of hair. For the most part, one hair seems just like the next, and no single hair seems to deserve our particular scrutiny. Yet, each hair is noticed and numbered by Jehovah God. Since this is the case, is there any detail of our life that Jehovah cannot know? Surely Jehovah understands the unique makeup of each of his servants. Indeed, he "sees what the heart is." -1 Samuel 16:7.

Who notices when you miss a meeting with love and caring?

Jehovah knows the details of your life?

Do the elders know the names of your children?

Unique makeup--sees what the heart is--can elders read hearts--how do they know if someone is repentant then?

11 David, who was no stranger to hardship, was confident that Jehovah noticed him. "O Jehovah, you have searched through me, and you know me," he wrote. "You yourself have come to know my sitting down and my rising up. You have considered my thought from far off." (Psalm 139:1, 2) You too can be certain that Jehovah knows you personally. (Jeremiah 17:10) Do not be quick to assume that you are too insignificant to be noticed by Jehovah's all-seeing eyes!

OT Example again--David

Weren't many of his hardships of his own making--murder, adultery, censuses.

Jehovah knows us personally--but do the elders and others at the hall? How many have included you in social events, invited you in field service, come to your house, talked to you more than Hi-Goodbye at the KH?

"Put My Tears in Your Skin Bottle"

12 Jehovah not only knows his servants individually but is also fully aware of the adversities each one suffers. For example, when the Israelites were being oppressed as slaves, Jehovah said to Moses: "Unquestionably I have seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their outcry as a result of those who drive them to work; because I well know the pains they suffer." (Exodus 3:7) How comforting it is to realize that when we are enduring a trial, Jehovah sees what is happening and hears our outcries! He is certainly not indifferent to our suffering.

Fully aware of the adversities each one suffers

So the elders know that you had strep throat and missed a week of meetings. Upon learning, asked if you went to the doctor, and why weren't you at the meetings. Sister Shining Example has dialysis every other day and never misses one.

He is certainly not indifferent to our suffering.

But the brothers and sisters upon knowing that your car broke down, tell you they have no room to fit in your family. That your wife is too fat and wrecks the springs.

13 Jehovah's care for those who have entered into a relationship with him is further seen in his feelings for the Israelites. Even though their suffering was often a result of their own stubbornness, Isaiah wrote concerning Jehovah: "During all their distress it was distressing to him." (Isaiah 63:9) As a faithful servant of Jehovah, you can be sure, then, that when you are pained, Jehovah is pained. Does that not impel you to face up to adversity fearlessly and to continue doing your best to serve him?-1 Peter 5:6, 7.

When you are pained, Jehovah is pained--when we are pained, the elders are not pained except to think we are a pain in the a*s.

14 King David's conviction that Jehovah cared for him and felt for him is made evident in Psalm 56, which David composed while running from murderous King Saul. David escaped to Gath, but he feared capture when he was recognized by the Philistines. He wrote: "My foes have kept snapping all day long, for there are many warring against me highmindedly." Because of his perilous situation, David turned to Jehovah. "All day long they keep hurting my personal affairs," he said. "All their thoughts are against me for bad."-Psalm 56:2, 5.

Composed before he stole a woman from her husband and had him killed.

I wonder what Uriah would have prayed to God for if he had found out this intrigue before he died. Would he have asked God for justice.

15 Then, as recorded at Psalm 56:8, David makes these intriguing statements: "My being a fugitive you yourself have reported. Do put my tears in your skin bottle. Are they not in your book?" What a touching description of Jehovah's tender care! When we are under stress, we may cry out to Jehovah with tears. Even the perfect man Jesus did so. (Hebrews 5:7) David was convinced that Jehovah observed him and would remember his agony, as if preserving his tears in a skin bottle or inscribing them in a book.* (* In ancient times, skin bottles were made from the tanned hides of sheep, goats, and cattle. Such bottles were used to hold milk, butter, cheese, or water. Those that were subjected to a more thorough tanning process could hold oil or wine.) Perhaps you feel that your tears would fill a good part of that skin bottle or many pages of such a book. If that is the case, you can take comfort. The Bible assures us: "Jehovah is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves."-Psalm 34:18.

Tender care--cry out to God with tears--wimpy, wimpy, the elders are thinking.

Jehovah is near to those who are broken at heart--but not the elders, insensitive cowards.

Becoming an Intimate Companion of God

16 The fact that Jehovah has numbered `the very hairs of our head' gives us some idea of the kind of observant and caring God we are privileged to worship. Though we will have to wait until the promised new world for all pain and suffering to vanish, Jehovah is doing something marvelous for his people right now. David wrote: "The intimacy with Jehovah belongs to those fearful of him, also his covenant, to cause them to know it." -Psalm 25:14.

The end was to come in 1914, 1915, 1925, 1941, 1975, 1984, 1994, over 120 years of waiting since 1874 when Christ's presence first started.

Do you have 120 years ahead of you, did the members of the WTS back in this years think they had 120 years ahead of them?

17 "Intimacy with Jehovah." Why, the very idea seems beyond comprehension for imperfect humans! Yet, Jehovah invites those who fear him to be guests in his tent. (Psalm 15:1-5) And what does Jehovah do for his guests? He causes them to know his covenant, according to David. Jehovah confides in them, revealing his "confidential matter" to the prophets, so that they could know what his purposes are and what they must do to live in harmony with them. -Amos 3:7.

Intimacy with Jehovah--Where's Jesus?

Yes you can associate with God but not the overly spiritual elders and their families. Especially if your husband is not a JW (or wife), you are a single parent, single sister, older/sick sister.

Revealing his "confidential matter" to the prophets--and who does the WTS apply this to calling themselves prophets?

18 Truly, it is heartwarming to know that we imperfect humans can become intimate companions of the Most High, Jehovah God. In fact, he urges us to do just that. "Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you," says the Bible. (James 4:8) Jehovah wants us to have a close relationship with him. Actually, he has already taken steps to make such a relationship possible. The ransom sacrifice of Jesus has opened the door for us so that we can have a friendship with Almighty God. The Bible states: "As for us, we love, because he first loved us."-1 John 4:19.

Close relationship to God--Where's Jesus?

To God through Jesus--Not the WTS

19 That close relationship is enhanced when we endure under adverse circumstances. The disciple James wrote: "Let endurance have its work complete, that you may be complete and sound in all respects, not lacking in anything." (James 1:4) What "work" is accomplished by enduring hardship? Recall Paul's "thorn in the flesh." What did endurance accomplish in his case? Paul said this about his trials: "Most gladly, therefore, will I rather boast as respects my weaknesses, that the power of the Christ may like a tent remain over me. Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, in cases of need, in persecutions and difficulties, for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am powerful." (2 Corinthians 12:9, 10) Paul's experience was that Jehovah would supply the power needed-"the power beyond what is normal" if necessary-so that he could endure. That, in turn, drew him closer to Christ and to Jehovah God.-2 Corinthians 4:7; Philippians 4:11-13.

If we have troubles, God will be closer to us--that's the key to getting the elders time and attention, have troubles.
Closer to Christ and to Jehovah--see they can do it, but they are afraid that people might want to be Christians instead of Jehovah's Witnesses.

20 Perhaps Jehovah has allowed your trials to continue. If so, take to heart his promise to those who fear him: "I will by no means leave you nor by any means forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5) You can experience such support and comfort. Jehovah has numbered "the very hairs of your head." He sees your endurance. He feels your pain. He genuinely cares for you. And he will never "forget your work and the love you showed for his name."-Hebrews 6:10.

Perhaps Jehovah has allowed your trials to continue--at least you know more than Job.

He feels your pain--definitely not talking about many elders I know.

Concluding Comments

What the WTS needs to realize is that people don't need convincing that God cares about them but that the people at the KH do?

1 JOHN 4:20-21: If anyone makes the statement: "I love God," and yet is hating his brother, he is a liar. For he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot be loving God, whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him, that the one who loves God should be loving his brother also.

at conventions especially, hand clapping annoyed me to no end.

the first day i was excited and really in the business of clapping and silently condemning those around me who didn't do so.

i even condemned those who i thought did not clap enthusiastically enough for my tastes.

Especially mid-afternnoon on Saturday, after the speaker suddenly raises his voice and pauses.

Mindless drones. It made me quit the clap-happy crew.

The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society is a publishing company with a purpose.

The ultimate aim of the publishing company is the ownership of the minds and lives and energies of the readers! What an amazing purpose! It is a purpose that has produced much fruit.

Throughout the history of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society the claims made by the publisher have impacted the lives of their readers like the doses of a slow poison over time. The track record is now available for any honest inquiry. Whatever claims the corporate bosses might make to the contrary, the results of even a casual investigation leave no room for evasion. This is an insidious business. It is protected as a non-profit corporation on one side and completely immune to taxation as a religious instrument on the other. The instructions which emanate like a noxious gas from the top of the corporate food chain have choked out all naysayers, whistle-blowers and policy critics. Control is a fetish and absolute control is the powerful weapon wielded upon the millions who subscribe to their purpose.

Their purpose, however, like a flickering candle in a drafty room, has fluttered about and cast troubling images throughout their history. The shadow of evil intent is everywhere. The Watchtower seized its readers in the grip of religious mania for end times in the mid 19th century and squeezed the last ounce of expectation out of every article it published. Like a barker in a sideshow hustling customers with a singsong patter of lurid enticement, the Armageddon hucksters gathered a crowd eager to escape the end of the world. Like any phony peddler rousting a gathering of rubes ripe for plucking, the Watchtower articles and books presented graphs, charts, dates and measurements based on any imaginary concoction it could pluck from its corporate behind; Pyramidology, convoluted dates, ad hoc measurements, pseudo-historical events said to parallel contemporary happenings, etc. Bottom line? Stay tuned for the next magazine article, the next book, the next explanation....DON'T TOUCH THAT DIAL!!

This juggling act could only command attention just so long before the balls started hitting the ground and bouncing away in disarray. Outrageous claims of miracles on the horizon have to be backed up eventually, don't they? Or, do they?

In every traveling carnival there is a shell game at work. You've seen them; we all have. The pitchman entices a group of people to watch him place the pea under one of three walnut shells as he hides it and switches quickly first this and then the other shells. The object of the game is to bet something on where the pea might be. Guess correctly and you win! Lose and you try again.

The Watchtower hides Armageddon under its doctrinal shells which it switches in a blinding confusion of dates, explanations and cop-outs. The winner gets Paradise on Earth or a special prestigious trip to Jesus on the Rapture express. All you have to do to play is pay up front for the privilege of betting it all on where the pea will be!

And bet they do! You see, readers of the Watchtower have been on a wild ride over the decades. They went from being anxious about the second coming of Jesus in the clouds of heaven in 1874 to finding themselves knocking on doors spreading the word about an invisible Jesus commissioning magazine sales. In fact, they bet their lives, their honor and their fortunes on picking where the pea would turn up. (Hint: it never turns up! Surprise!)

The crazy shell game started with the readers of the Watchtower being Bible Students. Then, they were colporteurs on street corners peddling end times like newsboys shouting out a headline: "Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Armageddon has already started! The end comes in 1914!" (1918, 1915, 1975!)

The faithful believers bet it all on where the pea would land and came up short every time! One date followed another as each was explained away. Like any circus crowd of onlookers interest waxed and waned over the years. The bet was always a big one. But, the stakes got heavier fast!

The second Watchtower president, J.F. Rutherford upped the ante on the old shell game. Now Bible Students had to bet the whole wad: absolute compliance with rigorous policy changes. To play the game and find the pea (Armageddon) you had to ignore your country's flag, stop celebrating holidays, shun your family if they didn't tow the line and you might have to let your loved one's die avoiding a blood transfusion. But, hey! That's not all! If you act now you get to go to prison refusing alternative military service, avoid pasteurized milk, abstain from aluminum cookware, refuse antibiotics--and (drum roll) for the first time ever, Christians get to change their name to Jehovah's Witnesses! No more heralding the presence of the King Jesus Christ; no! Knock the doors, peddle the books and get the money for JEHOVAH!!

The shadow of these events casts a long dark pall of tragedy over the history of the Watchtower Society. New dates for the End brought in more and more bets as the population of Jehovah's Witnesses mounted. Who wouldn't want to WIN BIG? (Guess where the pea lands and win it all!!)

But, the fallout of the errors took a huge toll like the wake of a powerful storm that wipes out the assets and security of families and plunges communities into despair. The community of brothers and sisters who labored day and night spreading these phony warnings about the end became hobbled by financial woes, poor educational opportunity for the children and endless demands for more of their time and less criticism of the disharmony between the policies ever-changing and the stark evidence how empty the promises all were.

And yet, when at last the eyes of a few were opened to the petty larceny of it all--they were quickly marginalized as troublemakers and ousted from the ranks of fellow believers and consigned to the purgatory of Apostasy! Like the kid who watches the Con Man hide the pea in his hand and shouts a warning to the crowd that they are being cheated, the disfellowshipped ex-Witness finds himself escorted away and dismissed as a liar and a ne'er-do-well. The now so-called APOSTATE is on the enemy list to be avoided, shunned and ignored hence forth.

What should an ex member do, keep their mouth shut about the con that is being worked on others? Should a victim of fraud keep silent and lick their wounds in fear of losing their family to the crowd still betting away on where the pea will turn up? No! It is immoral to hide a crime perpetrated on innocent victims. Worse, it is unthinkable to allow one's own family to be defrauded in the name of God and his service.

The so-called APOSTATE begins to spread the word that a contagious and insidious harm is being carried out by a protected religious outfit that makes special claims for its authority. Then, the critics come to the APOSTATE and chide them for their passion and ridicule their motives and scold them for their message.

How is one to answer such charges of unfair criticism? Shouldn't the good of the Watchtower Society be praised equally? After all, they aren't axe-murderers!

Here is one answer.

The Watchtower has over ONE HUNDRED YEARS head start on the whistle-blower. Their propaganda machine is a well-oiled multinational high octane monster. All Watchtower- bashing all the time couldn't catch up with the damage they've done.

In short, they steal men's souls by sucking time out of people's life to do anything personally beneficial. The busy-busy slave work spreads the viral infection to others. They use as bait the dazzling promise of paradise and the ultimate escape vacation from cares and woes. What they leave behind is the dried out husks of used up people left disillusioned, spent and devoid of a shred of self-worth.

And the Watchtower needs defending?

Watchtower critics are a tiny, almost infinitesimal anti-biotic in a sea of monstrous bilge spewing forth from Brooklyn. We are awash in their hate-mongering as they label honest query and righteous demands for accountability as apostasy. They hold families hostage and pit fathers against children and husbands against wives in their bid to own the very mind of each of their captives.

I say this. Here on www.FREEMINDS.org and other sites, we are a hospital; a triage unit on a battlefield so vast and littered with so many wounded, it can never be said the succor can ever equal the devastation to damaged lives. (Read the personal stories and add up the misery!)

Stifled voices strain to cry out here after decades of cover up, repression and mind control. The tortured souls of the innocent victims seek asylum in our embrace. The moans of exasperation have reached high into the empty skies to overflow the gates of Jehovah's abandoned Palace of Justice.

This, for the "apostate," is our only paradise, our purgatory and our hell all rolled into one. Let each man, woman, and child say what he will without restraint and some small measure of balance might be restored to toppled lives hungry for amnesty from the awful shredding evil of the Watchtower menace.

Extol the imaginary virtues of the Watchtower Society as you will, their graveyard of damaged souls grows yet more vast each day. For they are but a mirage of pretended righteousness which hides a smoldering wasteland of scorched immorality; those vampires of feckless misery. I have tasted the fruits of the Watchtower ministry and the sour poison has sickened me. But, it has not numbed my tongue.

I've not one word to say on their behalf and they have none to say on mine. That is balance enough.
