  okay, so i've been trying to figure out what i can do to help jws out.

  obviously, no one can force someone to think, but sometimes a thought-provoking question can get the gears turning.

  so i hit upon this idea of placing ads in a weekly newspaper here in seattle.

  California Circuit gets a slap on the hand

  only some 600 from a circuit of about 1100 were present to the dismay of the district and circuit overseers responsible for the assembly.

  A "Circuit" (Northern California area including south of Sacramento and foothills) had only half of their expected attendance at the 10-11 April circuit assembly. Only some 600 from a circuit of about 1100 were present to the dismay of the District and Circuit overseers responsible for the assembly. Of major concern was how to foot the bill for the event which is funded by member donations. Average account reports at circuit assemblies ask for about $7,000 per weekend.

  One reason for the lack of attendance was that the assembly was held in Madera (near Fresno CA), causing members to drive up to 4 hours. This circuit is used to travelling about 1.5 hours one-way for their assemblies.

  As a result, the entire circuit was reprimanded upon return to their Kingdom Halls at the April Service Meeting "Local Needs" talk. About 11 congregations got the information that other circuits have to travel 12+ hours to attend. Foreign-language delegates often have only one location in the entire US to attend. Thankfully a new assembly hall about 45 minutes away is now open for operation.

  Kingdom Melodies - What's the deal?

  since i was an active witness for so many years, i only recently discovered many beautiful gospel and spiritual songs.

  can anyone tell me why jw's are so against singing any other songs than kingdom melodies.. .

  most are just, well in a word bad.. i actually remeber when all of our songs were played on a piano by a tone deaf elders bethelite's wife.

  This week during the Service Meeting, JWs are encouraged to listen to Kingdom Melodies at home or in other "extra-theocratic" activities. Paraphrasing the Kingdom Ministry May 04, "Much of the music today reflects the worlds values." I guess that would include gospel from the "Harlot" of false religion.

  However, gospel has interesting roots and fruits. It is based in African ritual music, designed for trance inducing. Witness modern gospel choirs and thier effect on audiences. It has caused a revolution in modern music and is the basis for swing, soul and rock.

  One more tidbit: African JWs do not use the same songbook (with standard Western musical notation) as most of the world does. Their songs are sung without record music or instruments and the music notes are the "so-la" notation. (Think The Sound of Music, "So, a needle pulling thread...")

  My personal opinion is the African culture is produces the finest music in the world, such as gospel. Its a shame JWs can't get past the glee-club mentality with "Kingdom" Songs.

  Currently...

  Situation in Montana/Idaho with a mentally ill member (bi-polar?) accosting two congregations and elders personally at homes including death threats. Reportly shut down 6 meetings between 2 congregations in advance. The elders called members and told them not to come.

  Perpetrator in prison, but may be released soon. He has not had disciplinary action yet but has been officially banned from local kingdom halls. You know headquarters is in on this one.

  President Larson stops the presses

  president of the wtbts max larson formally stops the press at jehovah's witnesses' printery in brooklin, ny.

  pictured below is press #4. with the sale of the furman street building and shipping methods changed to road freight, jws seems posed to evacuate their brooklin headquaters.

  jw have also been beefing up their worldwide branches, including a large facility in brazil, to decentralize their publishing empire.. common speculation among members is the fds relocation to patterson ny is based on new york city's status as a target for terrorism and god's wrath in armaggedon.. will the brooklin heights beacon "read the bible daily" be lost forever?
