hi, i posted earlier "taking bets" about the jws serving a funeral dinner for my jw aunt in the local presby church.

the majority of those who answered was right...no, they are not able to do that, surprize surprize!

we are having our own family dinner in my uncle's home.

This was interesting. The head honcho elder talked to the singer, they agreed on him singing How Great Thou Art, at the very beginning, and to keep it short, just one verse probably. OK, great, nothing we saw wrong with the words...but 6 hours later JW elder calls back and says he would have to follow his conscience and not agree to having the song done. Out of respect for auntie, my cousin agreed to drop it and will sing at the dinner. Not quite the same, but, tell me what is wrong with these words. I realize the 2nd and 3rd verses give praise to Jesus, but...what is wrong with this?

SORRY, I had to rant, I can't believe these people. I'll be praying for their cult-warped minds at the service.

Thanks Annie, this is how I feel. It wasn't meant to make a statement, but then again, I would be secretly pleased. The one who wants to sing is a Christian singer who, being a family member, wanted to make his contribution. He doesn't know the depths of the JW teachings, just the usual no blood stuff.

At this time, it appears that the elder in charge of the service has been trying to reach him by phone, so I am curious as to what comes of the conversation. The relative is not one to press an issue, and especially since Auntie was a believer (JW), I am sure they would want to do only what she wants. So be it.

Welcome! You sound like a smart young woman. I am a RC and my daughter dated a JW, which is how I came to this board. You are very fortunate to have the information available, these people are great! The sad thing about JWs is they are brainwashed, although they would deny it and laugh at the thought, it is true. Many have been harmed by their teachings. Many here, former JW's, are now atheist or at least against organized religion. Easy to see why, after one knows what they went through as JWs.

Stay smart, and happy, and healthy. Your mental health will suffer if you stay with this guy, even as nice as he is, it is a harmful relationship. I know firsthand. You can send me a message if you like, since I have been there done that, I enjoy helping others. But it sounds like you are on the right track,

JW's, the only people on earth who...Pray the Lord's Prayer, Like Jesus did/taught us....

The Lord's Prayer sums up the teaching of Jesus. It is also a prayer that offers the grace of Jesus: his reverence for God, his childlike confidence in his Father, and his power to go bravely through life no matter what comes. When we pray his prayer, his spirit becomes our own.

Our Father, Who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses.

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil...AMEN.

JUST KIDDING! OF COURSE GOOD JW's DON't RECITE THE LORD's PRAYER. GOD FORBID THEY MIGHT HOLD HANDS WITH other CHRISTIANS in prayer. Oh, I forgot, in recent years they do call themselves Jehovah's Christian witnesses, don't they? So, one would suppose it is acceptable to recite the Lord's Prayer now, right? WRONG AGAIN! Geesh, I'm confused!

Really!??? We are not doing this to offend anyone, but wanted to add a family touch to the service, since the JWs are in charge of the deal (no one else was JW but her)...SO, out of respect, should we cancel and he could sing at the dinner? I don't think anyone else in the family but me knows the JW mindset (thanks to this website...I'm edurcated!)

Hi, I posted earlier "Taking Bets" about the JWs serving a funeral dinner for my JW aunt in the local Presby church. The Majority of those who answered was right...No, they are not able to do that, surprize surprize! We are having our own family dinner in my uncle's home. I don't think they are even bringing food.

BUT...the JW service is only going to be graveside and my cousin, who has a beautiful voice, is going to sing an old-time appropriate hymn, as part of the family tribute. Something like "Peace in the Valley" Of course, the JW's don't know this. He can sing acapella and is going to just burst it out at the appropriate time.

What kind of reaction could we expect???

we trudge along in our little lives, worrying about bills and disagreeing about who should put away the laundry, then whammo!!!

the love of your life can be gone in an instant.. we returned from a weekend trip visiting family and suddenly my husband was vomiting blood, lots of it.

he was in the er within 30 minutes and in the icu in another 30 minutes.

Possible Witnesses or Potential Converts? Should I Ask?

down the road from my home is a small country store.

this is the only store for miles either way on this road.

it was owned previously by a neighbor, and has been in his family for several years.

Yes, definitely ask them...since they are out there in plain sight, it's not like you are snooping. I think we all owe

it to innocent 'ones', to give them fair warning. Let us know how it goes!

my hubby's aunt died, she was an old maid jw.

very kindly thing, but distanced herself from the rest of the family, no jw's.

My hubby's aunt died, she was an old maid JW. Very kindly thing, but distanced herself from the rest of the family, no JW's. She is being cremated (this surprised me...?? guess it is OK) and there is only a graveside service. The JW's offered to serve a meal for the family, and since most of the family is elderly, they are taking up the offer. However, there is no place in the little town to hold the meal because there is a county fair going on. SO, her brother offered their church hall, Methodist, to be used. I guess they are awaiting a response from the JW's...

SO...Do you think Yes, they will do it, or NO, will they not cross the line into a Satan-led church building? Just thought it would be interesting to see what ya'll think.

Twelve Step Program

i borrowed a copy of "jehovah's witnesses; portrait of a contemporary religious movement" from the library and my never-wuz-a-dubbie boyfriend saw it.

he looked a little pissed off and said to me "you've wasted 40+ years of your life with this stuff, i don't see why you have to waste even more time with this; but if you do, it's your choice.

i guess you have to have been there.

Mapleleaf, Welcome, although you aren't new here, but newer than some! Anyway, your BF cannot relate to your

JW upbringing/thoughts anymore than a recovering addict/alcoholic's spouse can understand them. IT IS a

Recovery process. I never was a JW, but have had famly connections with them and that is why I am here.

Believe me, it has to be Totally difficult for anyone who hasn't researched what they are taught in the JW "cult" , to

understand why it affects someone after years of being involved. Don't get pissed at him for getting pissed...he has

a normal reaction to something that, in his mind, makes no sense. Might be good for him to visit this board and

see what others have gone through, then he'd get an understanding of how little things like wrapping birthday packages

affect you. God, when I think of someone suffering over what the 'rest of us' take for granted...family gatherings, churches with crosses, etc. etc. it breaks my heart. Such un-needed stress and anguish!
