Interesting question. They have to be careful downsizing Bethelites because of the free labor. And Dorothy's right about the cash flow from assemblies. If they have to pay for the facilities, then it puts more of a 'guilt trip' on the attendees (do they still use the stupid word 'delegates') to donate even more money to 'defray the expenses'. Interesting thought about the Awake!, though. My guess is that as things get tighter, they'll just up the cost of the literature to the publisher.....

As far as the 'reason' getting around due to the rumor mill....
How many of you remember when, after a person was df'd, there would be a 'local needs' part on either that service meeting or the one the next week regarding certain 'unacceptable' behavior. We all knew it was the reason that the person in question had been df'd. I clearly remember numerous times that this happened. Someone would get dissed and then there would be a local needs part on fornication, or homosexuality, or smoking, etc. Of course, this has been quite a few years ago, but I always thought it was interesting.

The Surreal JW Horror show our agony and anguish
by Undaunted Danny inthe anguish and the agony of having to renounce the lifelong convictions of one's heart.the surreal horror to know that it was all a lie!
for the 33 years that i was a j-ho,the central theme of discussion among active jehovah's witnesses was their inescapable mortality.here i am 47 years old and the onset and onrush of middle-age can be overwhelming and devastating.
when they die they don't go to heaven.many like myself, squandered our youth for the watchtower.years of are vital prime spent in the borg are gone now forever.

Danny,
You make such a good point (as always!) about retirement. It's funny how a lot of kids grow up being taught the virtues of saving money, while most JW kids (like me) were never taught that because it 'wasn't going to matter'. Fortunately, my parents retired from a school district here in Texas and the teacher's retirement package is excellent. Otherwise, they would have no savings, no investments, nothing but SS to live on. I only recently began putting money away in a 401K and it's amazing how much more I have to contribute every month now that I'm 35 to have the same amount I would have had with a much smaller monthly contribution if I'd started at 25. Let me say "Thank You" to the WTS for encouraging me to save rather than give money to their org....(actually, I want to say something that ends in 'you', but definitely does NOT begin with 'thanks'....lol).

Back from the District Convention!
by apocalypse inis there a way to put up audio clips for all to listen to?
i have a few doozies.. man, i lost count of the times they were hammering on "the slave"... obey the slave blah blah and "have faith in the organization.".
"keep repeating the lie, and it will eventually take on a life of its own".

After having shared my feelings on the WTS w/ my parents this week, I'm wondering how they are now thinking after attending the convention this weekend. Hopefully they haven't been 're-indoctrinated'.....but I'm sure the 'be faithful to the organization' message had it's impact.
You know, that is such a good point. Faith in God and Christ should be stressed, not to some organization......

Very sick "joke": Setting homeless man ablaze...
by Elsewhere inhttp://www.cnn.com/2004/us/southwest/06/17/man.set.ablaze.ap/index.html.
video shows homeless man being set ablaze.
corpus christi, texas (ap) -- police asked local tv stations to air a surveillance video showing a homeless man who was set ablaze flailing his arms and running in a circle as he tried to extinguish the flames.. police were looking for up to eight men who participated in the attack outside an agency that helps the homeless.

Maybe he'll carry a sign now that says "Will work for fire extinguisher"......<hiding to avoid all the objects now being thrown at me>
It's no worse than the guy hit by the nurse who let him die in her windshield over a period of two days. That was in Fort Worth....hey, wait....what is it about us Texans and the homeless??

Had the 'talk' w/ my dad last night.....
by TallTexan inif y'all remember, i posted a couple of days ago that i'd had the 'talk' w/ my mom and it went really well.
well, at her request, i had the 'talk' w/ my dad.

If y'all remember, I posted a couple of days ago that I'd had the 'talk' w/ my mom and it went really well. Well, at her request, I had the 'talk' w/ my dad. Mind you, he's been in the truth since the mid-50's, elder, pioneer, etc, etc. I was really hesitant because he's always been more closed minded than my mom. Well, he was really receptive too. In fact, I damn near had them talked out of going to the assembly this weekend....lol. He shared with me a number of experiences from his time as an elder that had always made him doubt certain doctrines and practices of the JW's. It was really interesting and has really taken a load off my mind.
On the other hand, this morning I was confronted by my ex-wife who had come to pick my daughter up to take her to the assembly. She had asked to come over and use my PC last night and evidently had read 'all that apostate crap' that I've printed out and have laying on my desk. She started in on how the apostates were nothing but a bunch of lazy liars who didn't want to live by any moral code, didn't want to be told what to do, were athiest, disgruntled, and I was just wanting to have my 'ears tickled'. She said "As smart as you've always been I can't believe that you are going to allow yourself to believe all these lies on the Internet."......I said "Well, as smart as you've always been I'm surprised you can't see that you're under the mind control of a hypocritical, compassionless, loveless organization." and it kinda went downhill from there...lol. Here were some of my favorite quotes from her this a.m.:
On the UN - "How do you know that's REALLY the UN's website?" "Well, if it is the UN's website, how do you know they're not lying about the Society?" "How do you know the Society's response on THEIR website wasn't a forgery put in there by some PC-hacking apostate?"
There were some other priceless statements as well, but it gives the general idea that so many JW's are simply NOT willing to even consider that their organization is bunk. This should be interesting, because she's really working on my daughter to be the 'good little JW'. I haven't shared any of this with her yet, but she knows how I feel. I'm afraid though that my ex is going to really put pressure on her to move back to live with her. Anyway, just wanted to share. Thanks for listening...lol.

The Craptacular Pain Of Jealousy
by Obviously Secret inheh, i try and i try and i try, but, i just can't get over my jealousy problem.
when i read stories, even on this website, about people finding love and having great experiences in life i just can't help but get terribly jealous over it and start to think about it for hours.
you guys got any tips on how i can stop being so jealous?
-
TallTexan
Hey OS...what's up? I know we've talked some in the chat room, but let me add my 2c to this one.
It's easy to be jealous of other people and their successes, especially if it is a thing or situation that you really want in your own life. What's hard is to take the action required to correct whatever deficiences are present in your life to make you jealous of others. We're all only jealous when we feel like something missing. If we feel content, then we are happy for others when they have successes, but we don't feel jealous. You need to do some soul searching and find out what it will take to make you content in your life and then set out finding ways to achieve that.
Now, you're young, so some expecations will be unrealistic. If you want a Porsche, that will take lots of time and effort (college, a good job, etc) - well, I guess you could just steal one......But other expectations can be met. You're way too young to be trying to have a serious relationship. But at your age, I remember how 'deprived' I felt when I saw all the kids in high school w/ a bf or gf and the enjoyment they got out of those. Of course, I couldn't have one because of the almighty word of the WTS. At that age though, relationships are important because they teach you how to function and interact with members of the opposite sex. So many JW don't know that and they end up married too young to the wrong person just so they can be in a relationship and have sex.....I know, I was one of those.
If you're looking to hard for a relationship, it won't happen. My best relationships have been totally out of the blue, when I was least expecting or looking for one. If you act too jealous, especially over someone with whom you are newly interested in or just friends with, they'll get as far away as quickly as possible and spread the word that you're a psycho....lol. Try to focus the negative of jealousy into genuinely being happy for the good fortunes of others. When you do that, positive things start to happen to you. I know, because I used to be that way and am much happier now for having worked hard to change my outlook. (Of course, if your 'woman' is givin' digits to another guy, THEN you can be jealous....lol.)
As for the guys who said 'get laid', that's not such a bad idea....lol. It helps to reinforce the fact that there are many fish in the sea and thus, if you lose one, even though it hurts there's always someone else out there waiting. Oh, and if anyone ever dumps you or doesn't reciprocate your feelings, it's better to know now, hurt, and get it over with then to find out 10 years down the road. Hang in there bud, and we can chat more on the boards.

Joanie, the Jehovah's Witness Stripper
by hemp lover inthat's the title of the song that was playing when i got in my car after work tonight.

Yeah, that's a great song. Funny thing is, I was at a strip club back in the early 90's (I think it was after an assembly....lol) w/ a couple of witness buds and one of them recognized one of the dancers and pointed her out to me. Turns out she had been a 'sister' in another one of our friends' congregation. We started talking to her and she was like, 'Uh, guys, you know I'm disfellowshipped, right?'......we were like, Uh, we're in a strip club....do you REALLY think we care.....lol. We had a few cold ones and laughed about the 'good old days'.....

Ever start a BS?
by PopeOfEruke indid anyone here ever start a bible study while out in field service?

i had a couple of studies but never started one from cold.

Interesting thread. I never personally started one, but my mom managed to start A TON! Which sucked for me, because then, during my summer breaks, I had to go on her damn studies...lol. Of course, that was before I was baptized at 13 (REAL smart) and then felt the need to aux pioneer during the summer.
I agree w/ an earlier post, I was not all that great about making RV's (back calls, for those of you from back in the day....lol). I usually lost my house-to-house record or used it to roll a doobie or something.
RE: Having to study w/ your 'friends' in school. I was the only witness kid in a town of about 4,000 people. I NEVER talked about being a witness at school unless it was to (lamely) try to defend the whole stupid holiday/birthday issue. So I HATED service on the weekend because invariably I'd call on someone I knew. And whatever idiot went to the door with me was always like "you should have used your personal knowledge of that householder to give an individual witness"....I was like, "How 'bout I use this heavy-ass bookbag to give you a concussion".....
