If you want some research material help, get "In Search of Christian Freedom" and use some of the thoughts Ray put in there. I've always thought that Metallica's "God that Failed" and "D'yers Eve" were especially applicable to JW-ism. James Hetfield actually wrote "God that Failed" about his experiences as a (I believe) 7th Day Adventist growing up. He stated that he was part of a religion that wouldn't use medical treatments and he saw how it affected it's 'victims'.

At 85, there's probably not much you can do. Just accept him for what he is. It's very hard to visit with someone who wants to talk about the 'truth' non-stop, but he is still your father and just as you don't want him forcing his ideas on you, he probably wouldn't want you shocking his world at 85. Visit with him as your father, as best you can, and know that you were the bigger person.

The only time blame is put on Clinton is when the finger is pointed at the current administration with the statement that "You (GW administration) allowed this to happen." This simply is not true. There is no easy fix for the current 'terrorist' problem, but at least something is being done. I'd love to see anyone, liberal, conservative, anyone come up with a sure fire solution to the terror problem. That can't happen, but everything that this administration tries to do is blasted by the liberals who are just mad that they have lost touch with mainstream America and can't win an election even against GW. As a result, GW can't do anything right.
To be fair, the OBL problem started when Reagan funded his revolt against the Soviet's, then turned around and cut him loose when he was no longer needed. Clinton cut defense spending so much that wacko's like OBL thought they could get away with murder (literally) because at that time this 'superpower' was living on past reputation only.

Really? I do. I've lost one member of my family and had several others attempt suicide and a number of others plagued by depression. If Jehovah's people were truly happy, would this be an issue?

Some are, as a result of being in a cult. Most of the people on this board, however, are much more well-adjusted then your average JW.

Excellent post. On some levels I agree with you, but I would argue that things now are not that different then they were 30, 40, 50 years ago. Well, I guess the exception would be that another 50 years has gone by and the end has not come. Perhaps that is why you don't see as many 'rabid' JW's as you did back in the good ol days. How many JW's now would sit for an 8 day assembly in the heat and sun at Yankee Stadium? I'd venture not many.
The demands of being a JW have remained constant. I guess the difference is the change in the 'generation'. Where most JW's KNEW that by 2000 the end would have come, now the end is a less finite concept. Therefore, the thought of toiling as a JW for the remainder of one's life may be too much for them to bear.
Interesting question you pose. I wonder how many JW's have committed 'passive' suicide by not caring for themselves physically, because the 'end' is near.

I don't go to meetings anymore, but from the comments of those I know that do, I think you are right on the money. The heavy emphasis on 'obeying the slave' is repeated ad nauseum. Must be for a reason. Are there lots of doubts about the 'slave'? One friend of mine said that the meetings are nothing but an infomercial for the WTS, with less and less emphasis being put on scriptural teachings.
Nearly everyone I know that still goes to meetings talks about how attendance is at an all time low in their respective halls, that service time is down, NO ONE is coming into the 'truth'. I don't think it's wishful thinking at all.
You'd think they'd learn to do something to build some excitement or something.

I thought the purpose of df'ing was to keep the cong clean, not to punish. Ask him to show you from the Bible where df'ing is appropriate. If he shows you the 'not even eating wth such a man' scripture, tell him that was for someone actively engaging in sin. Ask how he knows if your friend is actively engaging in sin.
Ask for the scriptural reasoning why he should not talk to you if you aren't df'd.
Not that any of it matters. He'll do what he wants. Don't let them spiritually blackmail you into doing something you truly do not believe in.
