Since I'm not a catholic, I don't feel obliged to have an opinion on the pope's achievements as a pope.
But he has had an interesting life as a man. He wrote good papers in pedagogy. He was a fairly good actor/playwright. And he definitely is a charismatic figure and much different from many of his predecessors.
PS
Strombolli,
I'm really not sure what was this argument about "kissing the Stalin's and Hitler's asses" supposed to mean? Could you elaborate on it?

The pope
by Stromboli inthe pope was admitted to hospital and on the national tv (rai) they were saying that he has an entire apartment right in the h just for himself, not only that but the room just below was emptied just to avoid noise for him.
unbelivable!
recently a man in italy died because the ambulance could not find a bed for him in a hospital so by the time they arrived to the one bed that was available 200kms away he was dead.

Welcome.
I hope you're not an attention seeking thick-skinned troll. Remember that your 5 minutes of fame will soon be over. Enjoy your time here and make sure the communication flows both ways.
And if I were you I'd quit using the "as the bible foretold" argument to account for the emotional problems you have with other people.
Cheers,

Gumby's Sunday Bible Study in Genesis
by gumby ingood morning boys and girls, today we shall learn of a championship wrestler in the bible named jacob.
this man was so strong he even beat jehovah in a wrestling match......can you believe that!!!!?????
this story begins shortly after jacob the wrestler tries to make up to his big tough mean redhaired brother cuz he knew his brother was mad at him for lying to their dad with the help of mom and stole his inheritance.

Jehovah didn't want to bring reproach on himself for losin the wrestling match so he used theocratic warfare
- "What is your name?" the man asked. ( apparently the headlock made Jehovah forget who he was wrestling with)
"Jacob!" he replied.
Then Jacob asked Him, "Please tell me Your name." ( these wrestling matches were so common with gods in those days that Jacob didn't know who the hell he was fightin)
Gumby at his best. I'm looking forward to your next study uncle Gumby!

This is similar to witnesses in Bulgaria being allowed to take blood with no consequences. Yeah right.

I have other sheep
by IP_SEC ini have other sheep.
john 10:16 is one of those overused scriptures that seem to prove the dual destiny doctrine.
(john 10:16) 16 ?and i have other sheep, which are not of this fold; those also i must bring, and they will listen to my voice, and they will become one flock, one shepherd.

The biggest problem I've always had with the FDS, little flock and other sheep doctrines was that the Brooklyn gerontocrats take such passages and apply them to themselves or to the witnesses worldwide. Then they claim that since they've realized they're the little flock and the FDS class, the other sheep should now believe in all their other explanations.
Few witnesses ever get to think about the utter arbitrarines, the vanity and the inverifiable character of their position. Few witnesses ever get to hear a different interpretation of the same passages. Since they live in a spiritual paradise, there's no need to eat from the table of the demons. If you reapeat the same lie a thousand times to the same group of people, at least some people will start believing it.
As Farkel says they're all "bible-based" lies.

The only problem with homosexuals is that there are still a lot of people who have problems with them.
The procreational criterion for "morally-acceptable" sex is one of the biggest hypocrisies uttered by fundamentalists you'll find in the modern world. If they wanted to live up to their own views, they would have to limit having sex only to occasions when they're sure to conceive a child. That means no sex during pregnancy, no sex during certain periods of the month and absolutely no sex for infertile heterosexuals. That no contraception can be used goes without saying. Breaching this rule is tantamount to cynically using sex to satisfy your sexual desires with no intention of having children (the horror!!). Of course no fundamental heterosexual bothers to think of it. Rather they use a lot of hit-and-run pseudo arguments.
I used to be pretty narrow-minded on those issues until my best friend came out as a gay. Time and time again he proved me miserably wrong in my views. We're still best friends. -

Language
by onacruse inok, so since sng suggested this (in the "intelligent design" thread), let's take a shot, eh?.
take a human baby, immediately from the womb; provide every physical need, but absolutely no direct contact whatsoever!
no faces, no voices, no sounds, no other humans, no animals, no trees and leaves and flowers--just a pure and simple newborn, clean slate.. would this baby naturally develop a language, some language, any language?.

Interesting discussion. We seem to be confusing a few mthodologies though (yeah my obsession). Some of you take the hard-science biological perspective, while others lean towards more the view of language as a cultural or even logical phenomenon.
This was also something Chomsky had problems with. He hoped to discover the biological foundations of language a priori through the analysis of linguistic forms - just like the benzene ring was first dreamt about before its existence got verified in empirical research. But then Chomsky was heavily criticised for missing out on so many cultural aspects of language that he reshaped his theories a few times, then gave up linguistics altogether and took to preaching his socialist views in Latin American countries :).
As it is all neurolinguistic explanations of language acquisition are highly speculative. But such fuzziness is typical of all psychological "reality" isn't it?
