i'm sorry if i offended. i meant no disrespect. when it comes to setting boundaries while still being your kid's buddy, i have no room to talk. for what its worth, if i'm ever a parent, i have a feeling it will be extemely hard for me to set boundaries and say no.

The difficulty is, is that it's impossible to guarantee that these adult games aren't going to make it into the hands of children - either by unscrupulous traders or uninterested parents, or purely by accident. The same thing goes for adult films, books, the internet, ad infinitum - for the most part, most vigilant parents know what their kids are up to, and will protect them accordingly.

i agree with preventing kids from viewing questionable media. but when people start demanding censorship of violent videogames (remember when mortal kombat came out?), and the rights of parents to sue the developers for their own lack of supervision, let's be fair and apply these demands across the board...books, movies, tv, newspapers, magazines, music.
i just can't wait until all forms of media have to be sanctioned by the government. just imagine how SAFE and HAPPY we'll all be!!!!!!

see, i just think its wrong to single out videogames. ever watch a quentin tarrantino movie? yeah me too. have i killed or raped? (or cut anyone's ears off?). nope. not that i recall. i've also played violent videogames. have i ever gone on a killing spree with a flamethrower? nope. (just as a side point, i don't think there are any mainstream videogames that simulate rape)
am i still horrified when i hear that some crazy woman cut an unborn fetus out of someone? god, yes. violence is here to stay. it's been here for centuries and centuries. humans are a violent species.
some people justcan't seperate entertainment from reality. i just think that terribly unstable mental cases are a danger to free society. not the media that feeds the nucases' psychosis.

bingo. that's exactly where i think the problem is. i have no problem with violence or language or lewd behavior in videogames. war games, the GTA games, the punisher...whatever. i don't have a problem with them. for me. but i don't think it's appropriate for kids. just as i wouldn't let my girlfriend's 10 year old brother watch scarface. this is adult entertainment. the fact that it's not suitable for ALL ages does not automatically make it unsuitable for ANY ages.

when i was at bethel PS2 had just come out so there was no GTA or Halo yet. i had a dreamcast and my buddies would all come over and play soul calibur and House of the Dead 2 (sweeeet...). if this email is legit, it just goes to show how far behind the times the society still is.
for the record, violent video games are no worse and no better than violent movies (they're usually based at least loosely on movies. GTA/godfather, scarface, etc.). considering the JW's stance towards movies i'd be surprised if they didn't ban video games. at least be consistent.

i don't know enough about ancient languages to comment on what exactly is meant by the word translated "congregation" or "temple" but that may be one way you could go (i.e. you could show her that the original thought behind the word 'congregation' or 'do not forsake the gathering...' does not necessarily demand the definition that JW's give these phrases. i know others on this board have posted this kind of material relating to the scripture in Hebrews).

i like to point out that the early christians usually met together in small groups of 3 or 4 in their own houses. no where in the bible does it define a congregation as "at least X number of individuals meeting at a place specifically designated as place of worship". it just says continue to hang out with each other. that's just good advice.

No, you just have to be wading in a cold stream early in the morning when the mist rises off the water and you see several large trout cruising feet from you...you cast out ahead and wait...the bait slowly drifts to the bottom and right in front of the fish...the adrenaline starts and wham!! he bites and the fight is on! Or watching a huge sailfish come coursing through the water after the bait...splashing and diving in the water...just awesome...Or running accross a school of hungry catfish late at night fishing with friends and some beers...or listening to the sound of the ocean while you fish from the beach... mesmerizing...what more could you ask for? BTW I eat the fish I catch..
guys, i'm tellin ya...you wouldn't be fishing. the streams and lakes would be bulldozed to make way for new high rise condos. and the clean, fresh, clear springs and streams that aren't buried would be dammed up and locked away from the public so they couldn't contaminate it. the oceans would be so filthy that the smell alone would keep you from fishing for too long (besides, you definitely wouldn't want to eat the crap you'd catch). all of our fresh water would be processed, treated and bottled before the general public even got to see it.
