What if?

does anyone have the fear of, "what if they?re right?

" i?ve had that nagging me then i have another voice, i?m not nuts-i?m not hearing voices-just a metaphor, tell me "they can?t be right.

" i just have this incredible inner conflict in me.

yeah, i used to have those same voices. like gretchen said, the more you learn about their past and methodology, the smaller the voices will get. i'm at the point where even if i desperately wanted to go back, there's NO WAY that i could convince myself that they have the one tru religion.

if you haven't read CoC, do that. for what it's worth, it may be worthwhile to examine the history of the bible and christianity in general too. this helped me immensely because i think some of us are left with that "what if they're right" feeling because we are now left with a strict fundamentalist viewpoint on the bible (i.e. inerrancy). if you see their foundation for what it is, the entire JW belief structure comes crashing down as the fable it is.

the watchtower is constantly pulling quotes out of context and distorting the original author's meaning.

Jehovah's Witnesses have done an about-face on their teachings about God, the Bible, creation and evolution, and are about to make major changes in their teachings on these things. On their website, they say that "faith in God is merely an emotional experience." "God is not an explanation" of the universe, they now teach, and that as regards the question of origins, "our universe is all a matter of chance." What is God's role? "There is no God. His creative deity is Chance."
As for religion in general, it "has been rejected by many people of science for its resistance to scientific progress" because "damaging falsehoods and practices have infiltrated religion."
As for creationism, it "has done more harm to serious notions of belief than anything in modern history." From now on, the Watchtower Society will encourage Jehovah's Witnesses to believe in evolution: "In their congregations the Witnesses nurture a healthy respect for science and its proven findings."

i hear what you're saying and i agree that those without a voice should not be trampled on. i disagree that terri is going to die a horrible painful death. i will have to trust that the doctors she is in the care of know more than you or me on that one and they seem to disagree with you.

as far as JW kids go, i think it would be terrible to hand the moral decision of whether or not to take blood over to the government. sure, in this case (blood transfusions), you and me agree that they are life saving but what happens when the government decides that no one should have them? they would then have legal precedent to step in and force people's kids to abstain from blood. i'd rather not live in that world, thank you very much.

The point is Terri did not have a living will with final arrangements, so we do not know the truth.

i agree. so in this case we have nothing left to fall back on but legal rulings.

Micheal Schiavo was only interested in the $ from the malpractice lawsuit. Keeping Terri alive would mean having to spend the money on her. So he has fought a long uphill legal battle and wasted much of the money on that, instead of Terri's care. Terri Schiavo is a humane being, she should be treated with dignity and respect, allowing her to starve to death is cruel and unusual punishment.

even if all that is true (which is debatable), the courts have already determined that if not specified by the individual herself, these matters are to be decided by the next of kin. in this case, her husband. end of discussion.

the day that judges can just ignore decades of precedent just because they (or others) disagree with the legal guardian's decision in one particular case would be a dark day for the justice system.

If she is starved to death, I fear Pandora's box has been opened.

if that's the case, the 'box' has been opened for years and years and years because this is not the first time the next of kin has made this decision.

i see what you mean and i completely respect your views. i guess that's the thing. this is such a deeply personal thing...the right to live or die...that everyone is going to feel differently. like i said in an earlier post, it's important that we personally know how we feel about this stuff and make our wishes known (legally speaking). it's when we're left guessing what the person wants that we start imposing our own moral standards and that never ends well.

the movie glorifies that her friend killed her

this is slightly off-topic, and i don't mean this to sound disrespectful, but have you seen this movie? the only reason i ask is because this was not the impression i got. after he did it, clint eastwood's character was completely shattered and, overcome with guilt, he was (apparently) left to occupy merely a shadow of a life. in effect he ended his life by ending hers. i really have a hard time seeing that as a glorification of his actions.

Signing petitions won't help because the decision to remove her feeding tube was not based on public opinion. Politicians cannot demand the reinsertion of her tube either. Gov. Jeb Bush already tried to do that with Terri's bill and the courts found it unconstitutional.

imagine the precedent it would set if the courts ruled to reinsert the tube based on a petition. in the future, if the next terri schiavo's next-of-kin wanted to keep her on life support, but a bunch of people disagreed and signed a petition to let her die...
