Anyone Remember The Chaperone Thing?
by Englishman inback when i was a lusty young lad of 17, a certain sister caught my eye - i swear that she could make her eyelashes beckon - and i duly decided to pay court to said sister.. however, it was not to be so simple.
round about that time, it would have been mid-60's, the wtbts were having a real downer on anyone who wore a short skirt (not me), danced the twist or grew their hair (me) over their ears.. but, the worse thing was still to come.
folks, i am talking about chaperoning!

Hey Englishman,
I used to live in London, now I'm back home in Philadelphia.
When my wife and I were courting (dating) we never had a problem going out alone in London (she's British), but back here in my congregation we were disciplined by the elders for not having chaperones..what a damn joke! You really brought back these ridiculous memories.

British JWs ignoring the GB.
by dmouse inwhen we have american jw relatives visit they are frequently shocked at the difference between how they live their lives and how jws over here live.
its almost as if we are from two different religions.. that divide seems to be getting wider.
i have noticed in the past two or three years a noticeable relaxation among british jws.

I think your observations are absolutlely correct.
I can speak from experience. I am American, my wife is British, we are/were both JW's. I lived in London for almost 9 years after we were married. In 1999, we moved to the US to my home State(PA).
My wife has commented over the past 2 years since she's lived here about how "strict" the witnesses here are. I had a thread posted in this forum on the 18 Oct about how we both have just been publicly reproved for asking too many questions about the org and the UN involvement. There is definitely more of an application of the "letter of the law" here in the good ol USA.

GET UP, STAND UP
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fightPreacher man don't tell me
Heaven is under the earth
I know you don't know
What life is really worth
It's not all that glitters is gold
Half the story has never been told
So now you see the light
Stand up for your rightsGet up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fightMost people think
Great God will come from the skies
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You would look for yours on earth
And now you've seen the light
You stand up for your rightsGet up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight -

Jehovah is sifting the organization
by YoYoMama injehovah keeps sifting and cleanning out the organization.
this board is proof of that sifting work.
congratulations on being cleansed out of jehovah's organization because of your inmoral and prideful lives.

Businesses can become a lot like cults. Check out the move "Boiler Room" - it's very interesting to see the parallels to religious fanaticism.

What do you drive and why?
by Escargot inwell, a post on the good ol days got me thinking about the vehicles people drive and why.
in the jws, a vehicle had to be appropriate for service, four doors, holding at least five.
i remember back in 1978 i bought an mgb and the brothers had a fit (hehe), i was selfish, etc.,.

I have a friend who was in an accident where his car rolled 5 times, all 4 people climbed out safely with only minor cuts and scrapes.
The car: a Volvo
So, my car now is a 1993 Volvo 960 , not only are these cars safe but they handle well and have lots of options as standard. -

How the JWs helped me
by larc inall of us have had negative experiences as a result of leaving the witnesses, some much worse than others.
many here, have expressed a bitterness and an anger over loosing so many "wasted" years.
while these are natural feelings, i think there are several positives we can dwell on as well.

Yeah, and the Taliban gave some guys a lot of self confidence, gave them money to learn to fly planes, and provided a seemingly worthy cause to give purpose and meaning to their lives (and deaths).
I know it helps all of us who have left the JW's to rationalize the pain we are feeling by looking at all the "good things". The problem is you have no way of knowing how many of these good qualities and experiences would have developed naturally anyway if your life had stayed on course. I suggest you read "Releasing the Bonds", by Steven Hassan. This may help you to realize that the perceived appeal of any benefits you gained from the org were probably things that appealed to your true self. The true self would have existed regardless of you being a witness or not.
