Looking to Convert...
by swyven ini'm not currently a jehovah's witness, although maybe i am (?).
my father was a devout jehovah's witness, and he intended on indoctrinating me in the faith as i grew up...however, my mother took me away from him when i was 4 years old, and i haven't been able to find him since (i contacted the main hq in new york, but he couldn't be found anywhere).
i have read numerous books and articles which i've got from the watchtower store, and have read this website, www.watchtower.org and been involved in the yahoo!

Funniest comment in a topic!

i was just re-reading a thread and saw this line-it makes you realise that some jws would fail a test to become the village idiot.. it made me laugh my butt off, again (same as the first time i guess!
) so i was wondering what other great lines have stuck in peoples minds!

Weddings
by ConcernedMom inmy daughter (15) has been invited to go to a jw wedding reception with her boyfriend's family and she would like to know what to expect.
the ceremony is family only so she will just be going to the dinner/dance.
not sure whether she might be "lovebombed" or shunned (doesn't that sound like a fun evening??

Update:
Apparently, the groom wasn't baptised (not sure about the bride) and since the elders had been pushing him to get baptised before the wedding next month, they quietly got married at his parents house last night.
So...the big reception is off and a more casual one will be held at a later date.

What Grandpa Said
by Gretchen956 ini don't know why, but this afternoon i've been thinking about my grandpa.
this would be my dad's pop, his name was fred, and he was a little german man who had been crippled by polio or something when young and used these two metal support cane/walker things to get around.
he was a quiet man, didn't say too much nor show much affection, a very hard worker.

That's a beautiful story...
I was the youngest of 6 kids by many years (change of life baby...) and didn't really know my grandparents. All but one grandma died before I was born and she lived far away and died when I was 6. I was really grateful that my kids got to know their grandparents. My mom is the only one left now and she is 86 and getting frail. Lately, she has been telling my 15 year old daughter stories about her dating years that she never told me!! I'm seeing her in a whole new light, lol. I guess there are things I've done that I don't want to tell my kids (god forbid they do them...or that I have to know they do them) but maybe as a grandparent--as opposed to parent--you are more at ease letting your hair down... -

Silent prayers
by JustTickledPink ini always had a difficult time with the whole silent prayers issue.. i was always told since i was little that if you prayed to god that he always listens, and that you can pray silently in your head to yourself and he listens.
to me that never quite made sense that he was reading my thoughts, are you sure he hears prayers?
the answer, "if he created your brain, he can surely access it and any prayers" of course that was also used "if you are thinking bad thoughts god can read your mind" etc... and quote the scripture that even if you "lust after a woman" meaning no action, only thought - you were in big trouble!.

but back to your point--
if silent prayer is a self-affirmation of what we want/need to do, then praying aloud is a way of motivating those around us and focusing them on our needs or at least on what we think is needed (not necessarily for us personally...) without actually "telling" them what to do. For example, if you are praying to find a new job...if you do it so others can hear, you are really hoping that one of them is going to find you a job...and then you can all thank God for working through them...hmmm -
