A milestone for my Grandson, David
by coffee_black indavid turned 18 yesterday.
(he is the one who walked from orlando, fl to washington, dc a little over 3 years ago on behalf of homeless children) i wrote about that on the forum back then.
what i didn't write about is that david has grown up without a father....not because he doesn't exist, but because his father has chosen to live his life of drugs and violence.

No Poppies in America on Remembrance Day
by caliber ini was surprised to hear this today.. poppies are not a big deal in the usa .
remebrance day (also known as poppy day or armistice day) is a memorial day observed in commonwealth countries since the end of world war i. to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.. "in flanders fields" .
in flanders fields the poppies blow.

I'm proud to wear a poppy - something I wasn't allowed to do all of my life, of course. When I was a kid we learned Flanders Fields at school - we all had to memorize it. It affects me profoundly every time I read it. Last year my grandkids also learned to sing "Last night I had the strangest dream" and the school sang it for Memorial day. Brought tears to my eyes.

Guys!! Guys!!! Two Jehovah's Witnesses were just at my door!!
by ziddina inand of course, i had some fun with them... an older, brunette woman who obviously dyes her hair and could stand to lose a bit of weight, and a slim blonde teenage girl - probably around 15 - 17.... i started out by asking them if they knew how old the bible was.... .
(and unfortunately, i think i demonstrated that i wouldn't make a very good "undercover" bible study prospect... .
but they didn't even know how old - young - the bible was!!.

Great thread, and a belated well-done, Zid. I wish I would have had those particular points last night when I was debating with my ex. He kept insisting that I needed to believe in God and the bible. I do like your point about the bible coming from the middle east and reflecting those types of attitudes.

Sparlock the video
by NewYork44M ini was not able to find an active link to the sparlock video.
are there any active links?
it seems like the watchtower has successfully shut most - perphaps all - links down.. please let me know if there are any active links to the video.

Holy smokes, Zid. That first video says it all. YOu watch his expression and the little guy is procesing it all. He obviously has the advantage of knowing its crap, but it's so disturbing thinking about how the average innocent little JW kid is gonna watch this without that.
I haven't yet watched the rest of them. The first one says it all IMO. Kids who have parents who can explain the nonsense are lucky. The rest are going to absorb the message.

Antisocial behavior encouraged
by braincleaned in"our choice of associates.of course, some contact with unbelieverssuch as at school, at work, and when sharing in the ministryis unavoidable.
it is quite another matter, though, to socialize with them, even cultivating close friendships with them.
do we justify such association by saying that they have many good qualities?

wonder how this would affect the opinions of outsiders? What if "wordly" persons knew that the "nice JW" they work with or go to school with views them as pollution and contaminating?

yep. wordly people polluted us. ex-JWs were even worse. Pretty sad when you are so mentally weak that you cannot have a friendship with someone different than you without immediately adopting all their terrible, horrible wordly attitudes. All wordly people are evil.

My wife and I bought a bar !!
by elder-schmelder ini think that we are a little crazy but we bought a bar in wisconsin last week.
here is a picture of my wife behind the bar.. .
i still work for my jw family, but my wife is going to run the bar.. .

cool! well done. I spent many, many years in bars working as a musician. They can be places where people go to heal, become part of the community, spend time that would otherwise be alone and lonely - in short, bars are good places.

atrapado's story parte dos
by atrapado inwe met after the meeting which i found strange i figured if i was to be named it would be before the meeting.
they read me the letter from the wt.
it basically said that they were happy about my recommendation but they couldnt accept the recommendation of a 16 year old that i should wait until i was at least 17. of course i was not 16. the problem is that in spanish you write the day first the month after.

Atrapado - you are right that they will punish you for requesting justice and not being humble. You sound so much like me in that respect. I was way smarter than the elders in my JC and when I told them what the rules said (which they were not following) it infuriated them. Your story really exemplifies the way they like to beat people down and get them to conform. Like LeftIntheCold, I didn't have much of a voice as a female, which probably made things even worse when I tried to fight for justice.
I love how the light came to you, especially how you no longer found anything worth commenting on after going to college (university). I was always one to pull out scriptures and try to expand my comments to try and make something simplistic have a bit more meat. Unfortunately I still stuck with it. You had the brains to get out!
