"Gossip is the opiate of the oppressed."
by IMHO ina quote attributed to erica jong in the toronto globe and mail.. interesting quote.
is that why there's such a big problem with gossip amongst jw's?.

Good point, Rebel8. Gossip is a petty power play among JWs. I recall it being pretty malicious at times.

Full transcript of the Prank Call on the Nurse looking after Kate Middleton
by Broken Promises inhttp://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/411704/20121205/duchess-cambridge-kate-middleton-hoax-call-mel.htm.
michael christian: we've been handed a phone number and we have been told that this phone number is the hospital where kate middleton is currently staying.
we thought we'd give it a call.

I agree that there must be more to the story. She sounded out of breath, perhaps distracted, otherwise as you say, AnnOmaly - it should have been pretty obvious it was not really the queen calling. Either the nurse was facing severe reprimands or something else was going on. The hospital is covering their rear now, but I could see them firing the nurse, which would possibly account for her actions.

I lived through the 1975 insanity. I think the most evil part of the whole thing is the subsequent denial. They put it all on the R & F and blamed them for misinterpreting the VERY clear messages the WT sent about 1975.

Interesting Jesus cults
by Christ Alone inlarsinger and his posts got me to thinking about others that believe/believed that they are/were jesus.
i started looking up a ton of info and stumbled across some pretty interesting cults.
i just wanted to create a thread to talk about or post videos, links, or articles about modern day cults that you have found interesting.

CA - thank you for sharing that video. It was a great topic that has become somewhat derailed (although I've enjoyed many aspects of the subsequent debate from the perspective of an atheist agnostic who actually knows a heck of a lot about the Bible and the Book of Mormon and a few other religious books)
Just wanted to comment on Miller, the former JW now turned Jesus. Somewhere there was a comment about disagreeing with "Jesus" being the same as disagreeing with god. That's a JW core teaching that the GB applies to itself. Interesting that Jim Jones also used it. It's a powerful weapon, really.
The cult is interesting, although I disagree with the prediction that it will become incredibly dangerous. Society has become obsessed with trying to identify dangerous behaviour in advance of a tragedy happening. It's an impossible exercise, IMO.

Milan Italy Public Demonstration against ostracism practiced by the Watchtower.
by Nick! inmilan italy public demonstration against ostracism practiced by the watchtower.. .
two years after rome, yesterday december 1st, day by day, we were about 100 of us demonstrating on a public square in the center of milan, italy.. .
at about 10-11 a.m. many of us were already on the spot, installing our gazebo on the public square where we were granted authorization by the police and starting the distribution of about 4000 tracts to passersby in the surrounding squares, boulevards and streets exposing the watchtower for its teachings and instructions on discriminating those who decide to use their rights to walk away from this religious movement without to have to incur the ostracism imposed by the leadership.

Well done, Roberto. I hope you succeed with the ICSA board. It is exactly this type of thing we need more of - educated, logical ways to shine a light on the evil practice of shunning.
The story of the young man who used to post here is so sad. Yet so typical, as is that hateful, unloving response about reinstatement.

I Still Can't Celebrate Xmas. Can You? Christians vs Atheists
by Malsonilla inwhile in the organization we learned one bit of truth regarding christmas; that it was originally a pagan observance, the summer solstice, adopted by christians much later in church history, and has nothing to do with jesus christ whatsoever.
no biggy for most true believers who left the organization who have slipped into (or fell back into) the grind of commercialized christmas with all the trappings and traditions of ritual binge spending that takes them even farther away from jesus than christmas' pagan roots ever could.
these true believers might say something like, "i know xmas has its roots in paganism, but we celebrate anyway because of x y z", perhaps echoing or paroting the frustrating responses we use to hear from "worldly" goats/folks when we would explain to them how christmas is not a christian observance whatsoever.

Interesting thought Loz, regarding the WT banning holidays as a way to dilute family bonds. For me, that's what Christmas is. It's a family tradition, a time we all gather to spend time together.
My family is pretty much all atheist, but we enjoy the celebration for other reasons. The lights are beautiful, people are generous and giving. It's great. Something really magical seems to happen. A few years ago my grandfather passed away just before xmas, the day before the birth of one of my grandchildren. I was exhausted emotionally. Suddenly my doorbell rang. I went to answer and heard singing. I opened the door to a group of young people, singing for joy of the season on my doorstep. It was so beautiful it made me cry.
Perhaps it's simply that the whole world shuts down and we all have a day free from work - otherwise it's next to impossible to organize work schedules to get us all together for a meal on the same day.

Stronger Christian presence on JWN?
by Christ Alone ini've only been a member here for a short time, but it seems like there are more christians on the board lately.
for the first few months that i was on jwn, it appeared that there were very few that argued in favor of a creator and belief in the bible in particular.
there seems to be several more that have recently joined...or at least posted more regularly regarding belief.

I wonder if there was a poll conducted, if the born ins tend to go direct to agnostic/atheist and the converted to JWs from christianity stop at christianity?
That's a very interesting question, notjustyet. Worth its own thread. It may depend on why you left. Personally as a born-in, my faith was on a journey. While I faded I still beleived in JWs. Even once I was fully out, I still believed in god and the bible and christianity for a while, although I kept matters of spirituality and faith tightly locked up because I didn't want to think about them.
It wasn't until I studied different philosophies in university and embraced existentialism that I started to really question what I had believed in any serious way. After my grandchildren came along and started asking me profound questions about life, god, Santa clause, etc., I realized I was an atheist agnostic.
It seems like there are a lot of believers here, but I think it has always been that way. I don't recall as many polarizing discussions about the topic before, though.

JW tour bus crashes in Florida, with fatalities-
by moshe inmiami - a bus carrying 32 members of a church group hit a concrete overpass at miami international airport after the driver got lost, killing two elderly people on board and leaving three others critically injured, officials said saturday.. the large, white bus was too tall for the 8-foot-6-inch entrance to the arrivals area, said airport spokesman greg chin.
buses are supposed to go through the departures area, which has a higher ceiling, he said.. chin said the passengers told him they were part of a group of jehovah's witnesses headed to west palm beach.
police said in a news release that the group had chartered the bus to take them to a church convention there-.
