FTS, thank you for this. Realy brought home to me that we are people, no matter where we are on this earth.

Ilovebirthdays - did you email the invisible president of aawa with your "story". He'll investigate, but you have no reason to worry, because it's a secret group now.
But seriously, you are an example of what so many of us have been saying - the Facebook damage is only now starting to come to light. It really distresses me to think of how many potential Judicial Committees are in formation as we speak, fueled by AAWA FAcebook screenshots.

The above article is from an activist website full of excellent articles and ideas and suggestions from the experts on how to successfully mobilize for a cause. Among the many suggestions that AAWA would do well to heed is this one:
- anger may fuel and motivate your cause, but all too often the anger ends up turning against one another, and your cause burns out.
It's beginning to seem like AAWA is so caught up in their brand of "righteous" anger that everything else has no importance, including personal privacy and harm to the individual.
The group may well be able to continue on to successfully lobby for the "anti" cause, but I can't see them EVER helping exiting JWs with the current approach.

This is awful. So sorry Sic Semper
Simon - I don't always agree with your decisions (not that my opinion matters), but you've made the right one here. Thank you. I just cannot believe the insensitive response Cedars keeps perpetuating.
It seems to me that paranoia is in full force. I suspect Cedars is asking Sic Semper to send details because he doesn't believe him. He has taken the stance that all posters on JWN are the enemy, and he may well be suspecting that people who come here and report that they've been outed by AAWA are making it up just to bring aawa down. Which is insane.
I've come to the conclusion that although AAWA states that their mission is twofold: to raise awareness of WT bad policies and to help exiting JWs, they really are only focused on the first goal. Their actions have shown that they are willing to justify any collateral damage to individuals for the sake of their "remarkable" goal of bringing down the WT. I just do not get why they refuse to fix the Facebook thing, so that's the only explanation I can come up with.
Volunteers are told that they must link to the AAWA facebook account, or create a fake account. I didn't realize until I read this thread that fake Facebook accounts are actually against the TOS. Another thing that is making me take another step back.
I believe some of the best and most effective forms of activism begin in grassroots. AAWA has discounted the grassroots and instead has set themselves up above all that. That they are labelling the ex-JW community here as enemies speaks volumes.

Your worst convention experience.

I had a number of bad ones. ONe that comes to mind tonight is the year they decided that strollers were dangerous and not allowed. I had a 6-month old baby and had to travel to another city for the district convention. I recall climbing stairs and walking the aisles with a crying baby and my arms ready to fall off. I was so angry that we were not allowed to have a stroller to walk our babies or put them to sleep. Stupid elders and their stupid decisions.

It would be nice to know...but...
I recall when I was younger, a very dear elder who I loved and respected, had a falling out with the rest of the elders. He fought back by never singing at the meetings, by refusing to do anything publicly to support the religion. The story that went around was that he had allowed himself to be stumbled. He wasn't removed as an elder for some reason, but there were some restrictions, as I recall. He sent his son to university, which was a biggie in those days. Even though I was a loyal dub (raised that way) I was drawn to him and deeply respected him.
I now realize that he was probably the first "apostate" I ever met. He never left the org, died and was funeralized as a JW. But I now wish I would have had some REAL conversations with him.

I agree - excellent name. It sends a positive message of hope and healing, while clearly pinpointing the WT as a negative. The acronym makes it doubly genius!

Well said, DAgney. I"ve been thinking how disappointing this has all been. I hope AAWA learns from this as it grows. They've made some serious missteps, and it's unfortunate they are choosing not to restore credibility by taking ownership. Time will tell, I guess.
