LDS are polytheistic and God is male with one caveat - God is a title (hence God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit ; in the beginning the gods created the heavens etc..) but the ultimate crowning glory of a God is to be married ( Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh ) which brings teh ability to continue to create children..

The Witness Cult
by kingdoman inaccording to the watchtower bible and tract society, all non- jehovah witnesses will be destroyed at armageddon, a time said to be coming soon.
the watchtower prints over 14 million copies of its magazines every week, and has over 4 million (in 1992) jehovah's witnesses are spreading their doctrines in 200 countries and it is rapidly increasing.
since it's origination, the jehovah's witnesses have had many names and boldly claim to be the only organization that god is using to speak his truth for him today.

Did the Devil and his Demons do it?
by Rod P intrue story: i used to drive for long trips on the highway a lot.
three-hundred-and-fifty mile trips were not unusual, and night time driving was quite common.
one night i fell asleep at the wheel, travelling 55 miles per hour along winding mountainous roads.

I had a small bit of experience with devils/demons/whatever you want to call them. It wasn't pleasant. There is real stuff happening there. All you pretend pyschologists and pyschiatrists and experts on sleep states would poop yourselves silly if you really had a brush with this sort of thing - of the very few people I ever met with real experience most were uncomfortable talking about it as I am.

No disrespect yankees but the Brits are pretty much your only friend over here so don't ruffle the feathers - all your other mates are only friends while youre paying them to be - just because you stayed out the war long enough to force the Brits to sell off our empire to pay you - twice and then turn up afterwards as though somehow you guys are the best - sheesh - the best real empire America ever had Cortes took with a couple of hundred spaniards...so there.
When you 'kicked' the german hanoverians out of America you forget that the Brits never really wanted to fight you anyway and if they had you would be flying a different flag. :P -

Evidence for evolution, Installment 6: The bible requires it
by seattleniceguy inhappy sunday, everyone!
this week we will be breaking from our normal tack of examining scientific evidence, and instead consider the issue from a different perspective.
now, when you consider the number of animal species in the world today, it is clear that there are literally millions more species than could ever have fit into noah's ark.

Daunt - I actually agree with you except with one small caveat - every time God prepares a gospel / revelation / people they have changed the commandments very rapidly and have cut off revelation from God. Once men do that religion becomes just another excuse to exercise all the things that are carnal - hate , war, greed, pride, abuse, emotional responses as opposed to rational ones, the mystification and magicification(MUW!) of God and the excuse the believe anything.
If we take the actual words of the Christian canon said by Jesus alone you get a very simple gospel which involves sacrifice, humility, turning the other cheek, reverence, anger reserved for mocking God (temple) and for preaching beyond the original revelation (pharisees.)
The recorded history of mankind is littered with examples of a massive social leaps forward made by some few enlightened individuals then followed by years of drift back to carnal, animalistic activities (war being the prime example)
The old testament does not record the full story most of the time so we can't judge what the Hebrew wars full context was.
I think there must be a perfect harmony between science and religion - religion to me is a set of behaviours to govern our spiritual side coupled with absolute truth about our environment - where the problem occurs is when we try and shoehorn religion and current science evidence into the same spot where they clearly don't fit (ie when religion argued for the flat earth or the earth centric universe) -

..but isn't that the christian point - evolution is directed by God as opposed to being random mutations in genes. The important bit about creation is the spirit - ie genesis 1 talks of a spiritual creation - our life here on earth is a mortal life and in the end there is a reuniting of the spirit and the body in the resurection to make a living soul. So even if the process used by God is evolutionary the point is that for life to exist it requires a spirit - not just a simple set of genetic materials. Now what strikes me is the speed at which species adapt - take a man up a high mountain and keep him their and within a few generations his children will be born with greater lung capacities. Seems to me that we are built to rapidly adapt far better than random mutations which is the core of evolution. Even with current timescales of evolutionists there doesn't seem enough time for positive random mutations to actually take hold - given my limited knowledge of actual genetics. Now if animals are actually designed to rapidly alter - not by random mutations but by actually bringing recessive genes to the fore then we can see how rapid species division can occur without relying on some mutation system (that also has to add material every now and then as well as just recombine it.)
Now we have a system that makes sense to me - evolution is satisfied, creationists are satisfied, the facts start to square in terms of time frames (creation potentially allows millenia )
Now the only problem is the ark story itself.
Maybe the flood was not world wide but to Noah it seemed so - therefore that's what was recorded. -

Should you keep a marriage together for the sake of the kids?
by Rod P intesting this thread.
tried three times already, but only get error message.. wow, this time it worked.
here goes.. there are a lot of people who feel very strongly that you should keep a marriage together at all costs for the sake of the kids, since they feel that children need both a mother and a father.

Hi Rod,
Youve just described every LDS persons nightmare- the family is more important than anything but God and yet that is the very thing that threatens the family! If I had been your Bishop this is what I think I'd have said...
Your relationship with God is paramount - without flaunting it you can keep praying privately. I will release you from any church callings including home teaching so you can spend time with your family. I would recommend discussing with your wife amicable arrangements (perhaps visit the JW church 50% of the time as a family) and then 50% of the time here (if your wife refuses then maybe you could come on your own those few Sundays.) I would then suggest you did all you could to save your marriage and support your children - if religion is discussed - don't argue and seek to find any common ground you can. If ever your wife makes unilateral decisions (e.g. the school thing) support her totally and completely - when she knows that you trust and validate her decisions (which she makes because she loves your children and you) then discuss how you can make decisions together. Things like avoiding assembly is probably a small thing in the wider picture. Finally love your wife with all your heart and make sure your kids know that you do - be the peacemaker and never ever ever argue. Kids should never hear you downgrade the JW faith or their mother. In time those children will love and appreciate all that you are and will come to know what true religion is all about - not because of doctrinal arguements but because you lived it.
Still - there does come a time when even with the best will in the world one or both partners have given up. Then its time to respectfully retreat and be there for the children.
My Mum and Dad split up over religion (LDS and Catholic) and it has scarred me badly. Respect to my Mum though she never once did my dad or his church down and yet he did the opposite. Guess which one I honour the most.
Rod - sorry you got the sharp end of a pretty cr*ppy stick. -

Should Intelligent Design be taught in schools?
by AlmostAtheist inkansas is holding a debate to decide.
http://www.cnn.com/2005/education/05/02/life.evolution.reut/index.html.
topeka, kansas (reuters) -- evolution is going on trial in kansas.. eighty years after a famed courtroom battle in tennessee pitted religious beliefs about the origins of life against the theories of british scientist charles darwin, kansas is holding its own hearings on what school children should be taught about how life on earth began.. the kansas board of education has scheduled six days of courtroom-style hearings to begin thursday in topeka.
