Alan - disagree with just some ideas you put forward. You've made it sound as though there was a plan to open that NIKE factory:) I'm sure that wasn't what you meant 'cos that would be bonkers.
Europe are doing the same thing with sugar and the caribbean unfortunately. We are dumping sugar on them produced under a protectionist system that stops them exporting. Not pleasant.
U74 - would you be so 'balanced' if it was your family member floating by as the cameras rolled? I was really hoping to see America pull together like it has before but for a few people out their its as if someone picked a scab and there a lot of nastiness oozing.
I got quite proud of the humanity and true love shown by the majority of people across the US in volunteering, reaching out, rehousing and wanting to give. That rocks. Sniping doesn't cut it with me I'm afraid.

If we live in the west 'most' of us are rich beyond our wildest dreams - we just don't realise it. I'm in an comfortable job now but I have been way below the poverty line and yet even then I just about had enough to eat, I was able to sleep in a comfortable bed, had shoes, could turn the tap on and get clean water etc... We live in such a marvelous age we forget just how wealthy we are. The only thing I truly envy of the mega rich is:
1/ Being out of debt
2/ Total freedom to experience what money can buy (and I don't mean bad stuff ;)
3/ The ability to help who , where and when I want.
The 'richer' I get though the more I find myself wasting money on whims which is scary. -

Hemp - that was really funny! (Not perhaps the best timing considering people died though...but it made me laugh :P)
Disasters always claim lives, I think that a brilliant effort was made all round by everyone its just that the US has never had to face this scale of disaster before. I can't think of anywhere that would have coped better. I could slap the faces of some of the reporters who keep tagging there news reports with such comments as '..people are asking how this could happen in the worlds richest economy' - being rich doesn't mean you are able to handle any problem with perfect ease.
This is the massive plus points:
1/ There was a plan - most of the areas were evacuated undoubtadly saving tens of thousands of lives - if not hundreds of thousands.
2/ As the scale became apparent massive relief operations swung into action - contrary to popular belief (hope) there aren't fully loaded available planes just sitting on the tarmac waiting to fly at a moments notice - the logistics involved beggars belief.
3/ America as a whole has coped immensely well, you've just absorbed 1 million displaced people without mass starvation or panic - no where else could have done that as smoothly IMO.
4/ You have the resources to cope despite policing the world, running several major relief operations in other countries etc.. You're the neighbour who looks after the sick, the hungry and oppressed while all the other neighbours are gossiping because your house is better than theirs.
Makes be spit:
1/ Sensationalistic reporting focusing on the unfortunate thousands left (out of million saved) who for various reasons (not all simply poverty / inability) didn't go and got caught in a natural disaster.
2/ Pictures of dead bodies - what happened to respect and decency.
3/ Criticism of the leaders while the disaster is still underway. The time for recrimination / replanning / summing up is well after the event not during it. Division is sown by such idiocy just at the critical moment when everyone needs to be united and pull together.
Support your president if only for the time it takes to help the stricken. -

Since it is obvious all religion is wrong why do so many believe?
by jwfacts inany religion that claims it is the only correct one is obviously wrong.
by it's arrogance it becomes mutually exclusive of any other religion.
when one steps back they can see that the contradiction of one religion over the others is a proof that they all must be wrong.

I think there is some interesting points about religion being a vaccination (against?) revolution. So far in our society no one has ever practised pure christianity just as no one has ever practised pure communism. Almost all societies have gone through violent upheavals at some point and each time those problems come about not because of religion but because of going against a principle of good. Ehh what? Let me explain. Every war / revolution / struggle is caused by the application of a carnal / animalistic / naturalistic motive - never by higher motives of love, compassion and charity. Revolutions are fought because of oppression , wars are fought over territory , the desire to oppress, to loot and plunder, revenge and pride (normally of the ruling class.) Even the crusades and jihads could never be said to have the motive of love at their heart - only bigotry, plunder, hatred and domination.
If religion is a vaccination then its a very ineffective one in the long term IMHO - in the short term it more often than not has been used by the ruling class as just another tool of oppression (Bush uses it now in a very questionable way - I get chills when he talks on one hand about his religion and yet his actions have shown him as a warlord).
We've had thousands of years and types of governments and they all succeed and fail on different points. The same goes for religion. Whenever we take a pure principle and mix it up with the weaknesses of mankind we get cracks appearing. -

Just reading in a stunned sort of way how cheaply you regard what was done for you. America has a constitution at its core that is the greatest this world has yet seen IMO. The 'Founding Fathers' and all the individuals who built your great nation deserve more than to have themselves chewed over and spit up by their children. I'm sorry you don't seem to value more highly what you have and those who made it possible.
There will always be those who hate freedom and liberty and will seek to enslave the US 'tis a shame to start singing their tune. If you don't want to stand up for them I will. -

Why would you want to join a religion that didn't believe it was the only true one? There is something scary to me in the thought that anyone would want to join anything as life altering as religion on an all roads lead to heaven ticket. Now of course I don't support the JWs but I stand fully by the fact that they have the balls to believe they are right. It is really easy to say that your religion is kinda goofy and not always right but gosh darn it the people are nice - that's the thinking that leads to doctrines getting changed according to public mood. Even those who dislike religion on this board at least have the consistency to speak with religious fervour and certainty.
A religion is only worth what it asks you to give up. A religion only has authority where it thinks it is absolutely right. Anyone whose a christian must believe that Jesus wasn't just asking for the odd five minutes and a passing reference when you could be bothered. The whole symbolic point of baptism was that the old person was dying and a complete new life was beginning, no doubt, no fear and total sacrifice - just like He gave us.

..actually it seems to me that there are two abominations of desolation - one in 70 AD at Jerusalem and one once again at Jerusalem just before the second coming. Ignore my question:) night night
