Why are JW illustrations so bad?
by Qcmbr inare all jw illustrations done by the same person?
i have always been somewhat surprised at the quality of them - i have seen children's books with more compelling and moving pictures (the enormous turnip brings tears to my eyes) - i know i'm being critical but its almost bedtime and i can't help it hehe.

I appreciate what your saying but I do have one teensy point of order - while I won't necessarily defend LDS teachings - there isn't any of the sheer lack of love and seeming fear in the LDS Church heiracrchy as there is described in this story. I have talked with apostles, seventies, area presidents, stake presidents, bishops (I'm working my way down the heirarchy:) from my church and they were very decent fun (often funny)individuals - certainly no fear and bizarrre Bethel type institution. I was a missionary for two years and the nearest I can get to this Bethel type organisation was the missionary training centre and when I was there it was a blast (sneaking around after hours, playing football in the temple car park, constant giggling in the lessons at the US style teaching - apologies I'm a Brit! - and some really cool group bonding - I cried the day we had to say goodbye to each other.) My point is if I'd been in Bethel instead of the LDS MTC I would have rapidly turned around and said 'cya - dont wann bya'.

Oh my gosh darn golly. I'll take it as this being true then. You know for along time I've thought how similar my faith is to JWs in many respects (especially organisationaly) but this just takes the biscuit. Why does anyone stay at Bethel????????? I appreciate the nightmare that is shunning and so on but this is beyond belief.

Hi Valis, wow that was quite a story - half of me want sto believe it and the other half of me hopes that this isn't a real reflection of life at Bethel.

Why the WTS hates the Internet
by doinmypart inthe wts & its various corporations are a behemoth, rudderless ship with no one at the helm; only concerned with self-preservation.
the result is an inflexible organization slow to make change and not interested in the welfare & rights of individual members.. the internet and boards such as this allow for excellent communication and freedom of information.. because the internet is free and provides relative anonymity it has proven to be one of the greatest threats to the wts.. the wts leaders could be proactive and act in an ethical way, but they'd rather react when a perceived "threat" arises -- telling members to avoid the internet, shun family members, do more/stay busy, and so on.. as jt used to say, "i love this 'net thang".

..well maybe its only useless when it doesn't help. I can think of several times when I sat and litened to something that made me stop , think and then readjust my crappy attitude and actually start thinking about other people..

The three wise men
by Simon injust a thought.... looking through the greatest man book, something just occurred to me which i can't recall has ever been highlighted (but please correct me).. i always thought it a bit strange that jehovah allowed the three pagan astrologers to find jesus especially as they were obviously guided to him by satan's star (remember they were led to herod first who wanted to kill the messiah).
what purpose did it serve?.
well, a few pages earlier in tgm book, we see mary presenting a dove as a sin offering at the temple - this was the cheapest offering that was acceptable which must have meant that they were pretty poor at the time.. shortly after the three wise men visited the family had to flee to egypt when herod started to kill all the young boys in an attempt to kill jesus.. what would they need to travel and live as exiles for a couple of years?.

I just read the Book of Adam (look it up on the net) and while I 'm not certain how much weight to give it it talks about Adam receiving the Gold, Frankinsence and Myrrh (or whatever) and it was these exact same gifts that were returned to Jesus on his birth.

HI MJ just took a while to browse your post and its fairly similar to sentiments on this board about the org. Thanks I appreciate the research. I actually talked about these very issues today in the Priesthood (men's) lesson and I said that I never wanted them to focus on form over substance. I suggested that they focus on the Saviour and pure religion (actually living the Christian life) first and if they ever found that the structure of activities that they were doing was getting in the way they had to stop and get some perspective. I pointed out that although both Cain and Abel offered sacrifice only one was acceptable - the other was so much pointless effort. So I do really appreciate the profound insight this site (and begrudingly the ex lds ones!) give.

Why Do You or Don't You Believe In The Bible?
by minimus indo you believe in the bible just because you were raised to believe?
are you sure it's "believable"?
.....have you convinced yourself the bible is just another book?

I believe the bible but I don't believe the stuff translators put in , I believe its riddled with mistakes (badly remembered histories etc..) and I think that something which was probably plain in meaning and context has been has been made so confusing by time and lack of inspiration when translating. However, as alreday said here reading reflects the reader not just the writer and so - if the bible contains truth the only way we could actually know it is if we received God's power to read it and understand it(i.e. same way that it was originally written) without that power its just another bunch of irrelevant often bonkers histories. Now of course the next question is ..is that power real or just another made up bit of religion?

I post on other boards? Since when? I normally avoid ex-Mormon forums simply because I have this overwhelming urge to put on my re-activation hat and try to solve all their queries plus I feel it personally that people left 'my' church and I come away feeling crap. As for the ex-Amish board that sounds fun but no I haven't been there. In the past I have posted on and off on various places but for the life of me I can't remember where and it must have been ages and at least one child ago... If someone has my nickname thats it!!!!! I don't care if they're ex lds or Amish where's my patent lawyer....
