LDS don't ban it though we get close with a ban on tea and coffee. There is a grey area about coke and pepsi which has never been officialy defined.Non-perscription drugs of the illegal variety are banned though.
..can you imagine if they really banned it though - would that include chocolate (what's the point in heaven then..)

Isn't caffeine a drug?
by Fatfreek induring the early days of the wt tobacco ban i can recall the six month (or so) leeway period in which baptized ones who were still using tobacco could quit those nasty habits.
i also recall one of those elderly brothers at that time who always reeked of smoke on his breath and his clothes.
i actually felt sorry for this smoker who had done this since childhood.

Why is chalk white?
by Qcmbr ini was reading some pro flood info and i came across an intriguing point regarding chalk - the fact that it is composed almost entirely of shells.
now i have no desire to start a pro flood blah blah debate.
this is a sincere non religious question for our marine biologists / geologists - why is chalk white and not layered with silt and sand?

How/Why were the Jehovah Witnesses chosen?
by Hondo ini am not a jw, never have been, but lost my wife (a japanese national) to them in 2003. i have been in and out of some of these forums trying to learn as much as possible about what drove my ex-wife to, for the most part, reject me and take her jw congragation as her new family, her new counselors, her new best friends, etc.
a jw doctrine that has always bugged me is the belief that jesus came to earth in 1918/19, or there-a-bouts, and chose them as his one and only representative orgainization on earth (i think i have it right).
some may take this the wrong way, as it may sound a bit glib, and i apologise in advance if this is the case and i offend anyone, but my ex-wife truely believes, no matter that she can't explain why (and maybe this is my answer.

There is an inbuilt desire in all of us to be part of a gang - an inner group where we are valued and validated. Religion is one of teh ways that people find that and in many ways the feeling is the same as being a sports fan. After you've got an allegiance to a group its very very hard to not think like it and reject what it rejects and love what it loves. There are many groups where people will fight tooth and nail to defend it even when it is proven wrong / not very good / not of much worth:
Religions, Political Groups , Sports Teams , Fashion Movements , Food Fadists and so on...
This desire to be validated and treasured means many are willing to suspend belief and common sense in return for emotional acceptance and belonging - I know I baptised plenty of people who didn't ask half the questions I'd make them confront nowadays just becasue we offered a group who would love them. -

The Morman's and Joseph Smiths hat!!! OMG!
by free2beme inokay, it has been years since i cared about what a mormon does or says.
so to even question their beliefs and wonder what they mean, has been no interest to me.
yet when i am watching something that should not even be about religion and they mention something that makes me wonder, i have to ask.

f2b - the LDS church doesn't believe the earth is only 6000 years old - it doesn't have a policy - in fact they've got far cosier with long ages of the earth and even evolution. I was just saying that having the Garden of Eden location pinpointed isn't all that much of a problem to me - it would have been easier for ppl to 'accept' if it had been in some remote part of Turkey or something like that!
The only things they make a firm stand on is that Adam was the first of the 'family of Adam' and that everything living has a spiritual element (spirit and body = a soul). There is an interesting command given in Genesis to 'replenish' the earth - possibly suggests that the earth was already full or had been before (also could be just a translation word.) -

Bebu - I'd be interested in some of the comparisons - the basic reason as far as I am aware is that Joseph didn't scribe and so when he spoke the scribe would occasionally make a mistake. I know there were also several documented places where the typesetter decided to 'improve' a sentence. I would be interested in some major changes though.

the plates and u/t where taken back to heaven however that does lead to the question about why bother to bury them in the first place...
