Funny thing is that Christian Aplogogetics group probably would have to add Catholicism to the 'cult' section since they have saints, the priest bringing Jesus back down upon the altar , transubstantiation, rosary, the adoration of Mary etc..
Then they'd have to add the Born agains who believe in seperate beings not a trinity of one, the BAs who disagree on Jesus' origin and current state and the BAs who believe baptism is essential (i.e. a work)
Now that they've whittled them down they should throw in the Eastern Orthodox christians (wouldn't be fair on the Catholics if they didn't), Ba'Hais (sorry - too lazy to look up the correct spelling Carmel!), old style Methodists (who used to be looking for a restoration of truth), Plymouth Brethren, Quakers, Amish, Salvation Army (no sacraments such as baptism), Exclusive Brethren, Church of Scotland.
I'd suggest they consider tele-evangelists (and their followers) a cult since they are 'personalities' who lead people around, quote scriptures loudly , often repeating the same word again and again, ask for shed loads of cash, live opulent lifestyles and generally disobey several 'christian' principles (though shalt not preach for money nor shalt though commit adultery especially while still preaching.)
I'm also a little wary about some modern born again habits of rolling around on the floor, getting hysterical, trancelike worship states etc..
Aw heck let's just call all christians a cult. -

Being Rich or Poor in the Org, did it make a difference?
by JH in.
the witnesses will say that they treat everyone alike, no matter what color they are, or what nationality they are or even how rich or poor a person is.
being rich or poor in the org, did it make a difference somewhere?.

I totally agree - money talks but if for a moment we be objective and step outside the equation and ask why would it matter in a religious organisation?
If you are wealthy then either , you are lucky, you were born into it, you are a 'bad' and exploit people or finally you have found a niche were your skills are appreciated and rewarded. Most people who are 'bad' tend to avoid church since they would rather be doing 'bad' things, those who are born into money aren't very numerous (most of us don't have large trust funds set up for us,) luck rarely keeps rolling sixes so we are left with most people at church being of the positive, self made successes.
Now if we take the qualities that the world of business admires we can see that they will also be very useful in a congregation: High self esteem, networker, open to opportunity, hard worker, interested in results over theory, streetwise, good common sense, practical, problem solver, strives for quality etc.. I think we can see many reasons why this sort of person would rise. Now I've known many poorer people who are salt of the earth and have been powerful leaders at church but generally I find a strong correlation between worldy success and religious success within my own faith. I think some people will rise to the top no matter what they are doing.
From a practical view as well - how can rich people invite poorer people to things that are too expensive?- - people with more money are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Being poor sucks, been there done that had a lot of bitterness when I saw what I couldn't have etc.. At the end of the day though I would hardly expect people to reduce their standard of living to that of the poorest congregation member just so they could feel 'equal'. If you've got it be fair, mafnanimous, charitable and enjoy it, if you don't avoid bitterness, look for ways to self improve and enjoy what you've got. -

Presumably this super smart bigot guy will be writing a similar article on wars caused by:
1/ Political ideology (3rd Reich, Slavery, English Civil War, Communism,Capitalism etc..)
2/ Tyrannical empirical aims (British Empire, French Empire, Roman Empire, German Empire, Aztec Empire, Mongol Empire, Babylonian Empire etc..)
3/ Balance of power conflicts (1st and 2nd World Wars, Crimean War, Kashmir Conflict etc..)
4/ Revolutions (French, American, Russian etc..)
Of course he could probably weasel in comments that suggest that religion was not the pawn of these wars but the instigator but let's be honest - religion has had one period when it swayed the world militarily - during the crusades and the Islamic expansion. Right now most muslims preach peace, most christians preach peace, most aethiests preach peace. Warlike people preach violence and will find their converts wherever they can - be it in a mosque, a pub, a church, a college or on the internet. Religion is not to blame for war. People are. -

Skirting the issue
by Virgogirl inwhat argument is put forth that women must only wear dresses or skirts to the meetings or in service and are not permitted to wear slacks?
where does it say it's wrong for sisters to wear pants, and how are they convincing women in 2005 to buy into this?
i remember many bitterly cold chicago mornings with frozen legs running to doors and back to the warm car as quickly as possible, wearing a skirt which was ridiculous and inappropriate to the weather conditions.

When I write in haste (like when I start writing a post when I'm already 20 minutes late for work)I come back and realise that it sounds so much harsher than its meant to be. I am quite the sanctimonious prig.
OK so God doesn't look on the outward appearance of man - of course He doesn't - even if you could be drapped in gold leaf and lotus flowers you'd hardly impress God but that isn't the point of dressing smartly as per the norms of current society - its to do with an outward expression of the inner person and attitudes.
Let me give you an example: While I have no problem at all with Goths and their dress sense there is a definite choice being made to be different from the mass but part of the sub group, a desire to express to people around that they identify with the broader aims, feelings, styles and culture of 'Gothness'(with an increased likelhood of enjoying similar music, movies etc.) in other words they are showing an outside symbol of who they want to associate with and feel kinship with. I know a couple of nice Goths so please understand I'm using them as a fairly obvious object example not as something to censure. Black nail varnish blows chunks mind you.
Now if I was to meet God while at church, after the initial humiliation of probably being caught out daydreaming about Rome Total War or some other computer game, I'd feel a lot happier if I was making an effort to dress my best than if I was in my PJs or bondage kit. Hopefully by making an effort with the outer man the inner man will spend less time on worldy diversions and vica versa.
I agree that what is accepted as smart by society moves a lot faster than church leadership. I see no issue with long hair or beards on men and for that matter pants on women.
P.S. Just to clarify - I have no unusual evening wear if you think my post suggested otherwise!:) -

Wearing uniforms / dress codes etc.. is part of identification with an organisation. There are many in our society who get off on achieving personal liberty at the expense of breaking organisational standards.
The army won't stand for it, many companies have dress codes that don't involve 'wear what the heck you like' attitudes. If you go out to a high class restaurant , go golfing or visit an exclusive night club you'd be expected to conform to a certain dress standard. It is indicitive of our current lack of respect and seriousness about anything official that we want to worship God in sneakers and t-shirts when we are perfectly willing to make an effort for other far less important occasions.
How we dress directly affects how we act and think - we seem desparate to show disrespect for God at every chance by dressing down and then arguing that God is no respecter of persons, we want to erase a God worthy of utmost respect and create some nice imaginary being who is impressed that you binned His commandments, is chuffed by down dressing, loves it when you bad mouth him, is satisfied that you look upon the death and sacrifice of his son as some fairly trivial act that gives an excuse for any kind of behaviour as long as you say the right things like 'I believe.'
Sorry to whoever this offends - dress how the hell you want but as for me and my house I still try and dress my best for God, it a very small act that reflects how grateful I am. -

by stillAwitness in.
since it can be understood that spending 50 hours a month in preaching and meeting atttendance does not constitute acceptance with god what are the "works" talked about in the scripture where it says "faith without works is dead."?
the wt always identifies them as meeting attendance, service and etc.
