How many of you elders shared confidential things with your wife?
by Magwitch ini wonder how many of you truly kept things confidential.
when i was growing up in 70's in a very rural community my father was the congregation overseer.
thursday nights we always had to stay late after the service meeting while my father dealt with matters in the back room.

My dad never spoke about Elder business at home. One time, a good friend of mine was publicly reproved. After the meeting, while we were cleaning a local bank, I asked my dad what had happened. He said, "I don't know, and if I did know, my answer would still be I don't know." Some years later I asked my mom if my dad ever spoke about judicial matters, and she said that up to that point, my dad had never spoken about any judicial matters to her.

How To Win A Debate Without Really Thinking
by AllTimeJeff inthis isn't as bad as it seems.... (in other words, i am not trying to piss anyone off....).
i am reminded when i see john boehner, or pelosi, who spend over half their time defining the opposition, of the fact that many debates here and in our personal lives (work, family, etc) are fought with the same tactic.. define the other side.. never mind that your way is better.
it seems to me that we aren't drawn into a discussion/debate because of a positive thought or direction.

Defining the opposition is an age old tactic. More often than not it creates mere strawmen. This is evident in the current political climate.

The New Star Trek....
by Quentin interry sent this to me this morning...... .
imagine being given the opportunity to reboot an old and beloved tv series with an uneven history of spotty films which pretty much had run its course.. j.j.abrams did what only a one in a million director could do: he knocked the ball out of the park!.
this film is outrageous fun!.

I am a bigger fan of TOS than the newer shows. I was very hesitant when it was first announced, but figured that if anyone could reboot Star Trek, it would be J.J. Abrams.
Well, I just got back from watching it, and it was just what the doctor ordered. Excitment...non-stop. Loved every moment. Had a few gasps of surprise. Loved the re-fit Enterprise.

May 4th was the 15th anniversary of my mom's sudden death as a result of a brain aneurysm. She died near the Arkansas-Tenneessee border on a tour bus headed for the Brooklyn headquarters. There were a number of over JWs from my, then, local congregation with her and my dad. The reason I write this is that last night I literally cried myself to sleep while remembering her because of of Mother's Day coming up Sunday.
I miss my mom. I miss her smile. I miss the way she used to hug me. I miss the look on her face when I bought her a box of See's candies on a trip I made to Santa Fe to visit my girlfriend. I miss kissing her goodbye. I miss her phone calls. I miss her wearing purple to Sunday meetings. I miss the way she would aggravate me by constantly searching my room for Playboys . I miss her laugh. More than anything I miss not being able to tell her I love her. I miss her not being able to spoil her two wonderful grandchildren. I miss the way she would bug me about not getting my hair cut.
I remember her trying to potty train my son...he was about eight months old at the time, but she still had him sitting on the pot. I remember her face when I rode up in our drive way in a tow truck after getting into an accident. I remember every word of the last time we spoke on the phone before she left on that fateful trip.
I remember flying back into LAX from New Mexico, and seeing the burned out mess of south central Los Angeles from the plane. I thought to myself, "That's how I feel. Like huge swaths of my soul had been burned out of me."
I remember telling my dad not to worry about anything. That I would handle all the memorial arrangements. I remember breaking down on the floor of my apartment kitchen after making the last call to the elder that would give her memorial talk. That elder was my mom's favorite. After mom's memorial, he told my aunt that he would never give another memorial talk again.
I remember, and I pulled it out this morning, finding a Mother's Day card that I made for her when I was in first grade. It was the only Mother's Day card I ever gave her, and in spite of its "pagan" origins, she kept it.
Mom, I miss you and hope you see, and are proud of the man I have become.
I love you.

I am looking forward to JJ Abrams' interpretation of Star Trek. This series was in dire need of a serious re-boot as Star Trek has really become an example of life imitating art (William Shatner's SNL sketch, anyone?).
As the trailer says..."This is not your father's Star Trek".
As an aside, I was able to see a sneak preview of Wolverine, and thought it should have been a straight to DVD release.

Another update:
I was under the mistaken impression that the hearing that I spoke of was the trail. Sadly, it was just another delay in the process. Since this fool is facing serious time, him and his scumbag defense attorney are pulling out everything they can to delay this. Sadly, the constant delays are beginning to affect my wife's physical, emotional and mental health. She has gone back into counseling (at my request, for I believe that the physical issues she is suffering are the result of the mental strain she is under). Please pray for her as she goes through this.
However, there is some good news. The DA has asked her if she wants to continue to trial or offer this scumbag 40 years. He must serve 85% of the term before he would be eligible for parole. My wife has consented to this, and we are waiting for the scumbag defense attorney to talk to the scumbag and get a decision from it. I doubt that the scumbag will go for it, so I think that the case will go to trial.
Please keep my wife in your thoughts and prayers as she is just going through a lot of stress over this unending (seemingly) ordeal.

Did anyone catch this Sunday night? If not catch it here.
I thought it was very well written, and well acted. It pretty much mirrored the account of Saul & David from 1 Samuel. My biggest issue was the homosexuality of the Jonathan character, Jack. I believe that Jonathan was not homosexual. I thought that there was one very sappy and unbelievable moment.

For me the best augment is TAG. Its best demonstration was the Gordon Stein (atheist)/Greg Bahnsen(theist) debate. Bahnsen won, BTW.

We were informed last week that they are finally going to trial. Nearly a year after the incident, this will finally start getting behind us. The trial starts Feb 24th.
