as i was exercising this morning i was thinking about my decision to step down as a ministerial servant and also to stop attending religious functions of any kind.

i've often felt that jws were somewhat flawed in their interpertation of the scriptures, but this morning it kind of hit me all at once that no 2 religions are going to have the exact same beliefs even though both religions might be using the same translation of the bible.

this disturbing fact raises quite a few thought provoking questions:.

Ah, yes! Because one is not a christian, or doesn't believe the Bible is inspired, there is only a remote chance they will manage to be "fairly decent humans". Oh, and if you're into paganism or witchcraft to boot, YIKES!

When I was about 11 or 12 I befriended a girl whose Mom claimed to be a witch. Nice lady her Mom was. Very normal family too. Loving parents. However, their black bottom swimming pool gave me the creeps.

Then there's my best girlfriend. She is an atheist. She is from a family of 5 kids. Atheists the whole lot of them. Interestingly enough, they are the most loving, normal, opening-minded family I have ever known. They all like each other. No family feuds. Give to charity and volunteer. Great group of people.

Oh, I know some nice christians too. A married couple that I have known for years are born again christians. Nice people too. However, they both believe that God should destroy Gay people. Why? Because the BIBLE tells them so!

The bible. The book the brought us "spare the rod, spoil the child". Or in laymans terms: Beat the crap out of them!

So, in short, Nancee, from my side of the mountain, sometimes *I* am amazed that some CHRISTIANS manage to turn out DECENT!

the congregation i belong to is small and most of its territory is in the rurals.

there is one territory in particular that is some distance from the hall and so it does not get worked as often as the closer ones.

then he said: "i cant talk to you people, you dont believe in hell" .

Actually, I do care.

I never set out to deliberately offend anyone. Even a JW.

However, I will not cease to express my opinions.

Now, just because I disagree with an individual's idea DOES NOT constitute an attack. I see a few people that start a thread, and when a number of others disagree, they say they are "attacked".

I do not like when people are called "stupid", "idiot ", "braindead" ,"have no reading comprehension", "a child molester" (just because they disagree), and "an a**hole".

Why do so many MIL hate the DIL?

Honey, I wish I had the answer to THAT question! I could write a book and make a fortune.

When I first started dating my husband, he had long hair (his family is not JW). Well, I didn't like it and wanted him to cut it. He vasillated for a few weeks, and I decided to take action. I made an appointment and called him at work to let him know the place and time. He protested, but I just said "6pm, be there" and hung up. He was there, and looked so dang good afterwards.

Well, come to find out, his Mom had been nagging him for YEARS "to cut that hair!" to no avail. She mentioned it a few times "jokingly" (or so I thought) and sent the under lying message that she resented me for that. Even though she LOVED how it looked, she was mad that he didn't do it for HER.

Anyway, through the years, other than that, I thought we got along pretty good. She did have a habit of comparing me to her other DIL, the "ruler" that I could never measure up to. She did EVERYTHING better than me. Wife, Mother, etc.

Then about five years ago, she had a stroke and the flood gates of anger and resentment burst forth with verbal assaults against me. She flew into a rage over the directions we took driving to a local restaurant. Now, my spouse was driving and my MIL was in the backseat. When I pointed out an easier way, she lit into me. I was "always causing trouble" and she wailed and cried. It was insane.

All my spouse could do what snap "Mom, BE QUIET!" because there was simply no reasoning with her. She also has a lovely home in Palm Springs, but has done nothing but complain for the last 30 years about how much she hates it here. She complains that my BIL is a successful businessman, instead of a doctor. Oh, she really HATES that my spouse is a truck driver and likes to ride motorcycles instead of playing tennis.

Anyway...

All I can tell you is that my foot would be put down, through the floor if necessary, that his Mom will not visit at my home again. PERIOD! Oh, he can go visit HER, but you will not be going with him. The days of free airfare are OVAH. If she starts in on you while on the telephone, just excuse yourself and hang up.

Or.....

Now, it takes alot of confidence to do this, but AGREE (well, not really) with her. "Oh yes, it's awful we don't have kids! OH YES! you are right! I am soooo lucky that your exceptional son decided to marry "down" to someone like me! Yes! can you believe the NERVE of those birds, HOW DARE THEY CHIRP! "

Have FUN with it!

Listen, I know that some measure of respect should be given to most parents out of obligation. However, that doesn't include putting up with their CRAP. I swear, old people, especially parents, think that their kids should put up with their NONSENSE just because they have managed to live a long time. So, stop lying on the floor. That way, she can't wipe her feet on you.

There is just no way everyone is going to be happy when it comes to making "rules" around here. Someone is always gonna have a beef about it.

On the same token, SOMEONE has to determine what is offensive and "obscene". Also, what has to be taken into account is a posters INTENT. Is it a poster's intention to just cause trouble and stir up the board? Or is their post sincere, but STILL offensive to a certain few? People are offended all the time here, unintended.

What if someone post something intending to be funny, but, instead, offends the majority?

So, what to do? Well, I believe that is where "What is reasonable" comes in. And who determines that? Why it's SIMON.

My point is that this subject can be debated into the ground and someone is always going to disagree. As far a profanity, I recall Simon posted that one "risks" deactivation, not that deactivation is a given.

Dung is(was) extremely offended by the posts of Wholewheat due to her own life experiences. He offended many others too. I surely don't think it was his intent to offend deliberately. I thought it was very unfortunate how he was treated here. In fact, I really detest how badly JWs are treated here. However, based on this posts *I* don't think it reasonable to give him the ax (now, I'm not referring to KJV/Wholewheat mix-up which Simon immediately rectified).

I remember being extremely offended by what someone posted here once a while ago. I knew the intent was suppose to be funny (I guess if there IS humor in spousal abuse). Still, I went off with both barrels because I grew up with that happening in my home. That poster is still here posting, and should be, because IMHO, this person does not have a PATTERN of such, and I use this word very hesitatingly, "insensitivity".

Anyway, I have no idea where I am going with this. It's probably too wordy. Oh well!

Ok, here's my point:

When all the "colors" of this debate are thrown together, what we get is a big bucket of GREY. I think for the most part, Simon does a commendable job with all the paint that is thrown around on this place.
