its not too late to learn or be educated or retrained etc!
its easy for me to say i guess...but it cannot be anymore.
times have definitely changed.. in the uk most folks planned on retiring at 60..possibly 55. it was important to get ahead while in your early 20s and hope to be coining it in your 30s, 40s.

I was robbed of an education too...in fact I was a rather studious child and was always streamlined in the academic classes. My mother (JW) took the liberty to visit the school and asked them to put me down into an easier grade as she didn't want me to study languages or the academic choices...rather she wanted me to do cooking, sewing and home crafts...skills to equip me for the new system no doubt lol.
Today I feel inadequate as I know I could have done so much better...BUT...to compensate...I encourage my children to get a good education and find a trade that befits their abilities. It takes time to restructure one's life after being raised in the borg...but it will all fall into place if you stay focused. You have had a lifetime of conditioned thinking...just like many of us....and now we have to readjust ourselves and start to prepare for our retirement and for our children's future in THIS system of things.
I wish you well with your studies...you deserve to find that sense of academic accomplishment...better late then never I say....and you know you're got the ability to do it...so I congratulate you.
I am also considering finishing my degree...I did two years full time study in NZ...and I only have another 2 years full time to complete it....instead I find myself working full time, raising three hungry teenagers, enjoying a new home with my wonderful 'worldly' husband to be who is ridgy didge 'aussie' (NO he's not a cheat either lol)...I've never been more happy even without the degree.

i remember going on field service with a pioneer sister then afterwards she asked me to accompany her to look in on one of her studies, i said yes and ended up in the house of a really nice indian lady.
my friend had offered to take this lady's daughter off her hands for a while and take her down the park so off we went - nice summer day, we sat while the little girl played on the swings and slides, we brought a bit of food and went back to the park to sit down and eat, as we were eating, the girl started talking about armageddon.
the conversation was getting along nicely - little girl slowly being succesfully brainwashed...... the poor little 8 year old girl ended up in tears - she was scared of the earthquakes and didnt want to die, she didnt want her mother to die, and even though she believed they would both be together in paradise earth, her dad would die and stay dead, nothing my friend could to cheer her up so i coaxed her into going back on the swings and all was well till it was time for her to go home and the tears started again when she told her mother of her concerns.

I believe that a lot of zealots (JW) use 'scare tactics' in the hope that you will be moved to switch over and become one of them...and to join with them in preaching of the good news. I have heard many pioneers threaten their bible students with the image of their children being heartlessly slaughtered at armaggedon because of the parents choice to turn their back on the 'truth'. Bullocks!!

i got to thinking the other day about things that i missed out on being a jw growing up.
not going to collage comes to mind as does dating more extensively.. the thing i look back on with the most regret though, is my lack of deep friendships.
going to high school i had worldly friends of course, but i never let myself get too close to them.
When you grow up in the truth you don't really believe you are missing out....another brain washing statement fed to children so that they don't feel neglected. I used to secretly wish that we would have at least ONE christmas....or that I could have a birthday or go to a disco or play interschool competition sports or go to a party with worldy associates etc. I think the thing I missed out on the most was being an ordinary teenager....my mother and the borg stole that from me and my siblings. I almost did the same mistake to my children...but luckily I left in time...my eldest is 16 and she is enjoying what I consider to be some of the best years of her life.
We had our first christmas last year....I will never forget it....from picking the tree to decorating it...buying and wrapping the gifts...putting up the xmas lights....writing out xmas cards and receiving them....I was a true Pagan!! It was great!!

Sounds so typical...and certainly not a unique case. I recently had a discussion with my mother and grandmother...both active JW's. Both my mother and grandmother were married to unbelievers...however...my mother and father have been bitterly divorced for years. Upon hearing that my father had terminal cancer...I said to my mother 'well mum...you're going to have to be nice to Dad in the new system when he's resurrected...now aren't you!!' Even though the ressurection hope is no longer a teaching I believe in...I enjoyed seeing my mother squirm...as the thought of life in paradise forever with her ex was not what she was counting on. (My mother is waiting for Elvis Presley to be ressurrected lol...PALEEAASSEEE!!!!)
It was their response that left me in shock....and I am still angry and disgusted about it. My mother proceeded to correct my thinking...and she said "You're father won't be getting a ressurrection"....then my grandmother said "He's NOT like your grandfather....your grandfather WILL get a ressurrection because he was righteously disposed towards the truth". Hmmm....what a load of shite!!! They have now pronounced themselves as judges of who will and will not get a ressurrection.
I was so angry...there was no love or kindness in their tone...as we were talking about MY father....he may not have been a great man....but he was still a good man in my eyes. I don't believe their beliefs anymore anyway....and I have come to loath them and what they stand for. You're right qadreena... some JW's out there are cruel...but I think my mother and grandmother are pretty hard to beat.

i have a very good friend who is a jw.
we were having a discussion the other day and i told him i recently sa the movies harry potter and the lord of the ring.
I think you will find that the society won't mention the Harry Potter movie/books by name...but they will no doubt release a WT or Awake article with a ghosts/demons/witchery/warlock theme ...and they will concentrate on children's entertainment. It will all be very pointed but I strongly doubt that they will mention any particular movie by name. But I could be wrong.
As for your friend jiutman...he isnt my ex is he?? He is probably justifying his decision to watch Star Wars because the theme is not directly involving witch craft or wizardry...and I like the way you reasoned with your friend using the 'force' etc. I believe you can always trip up a JW on their conscience decisions...there is always a flaw somewhere at sometime....I would tell your JW friend that he should be "righteous in what is least as well as righteous in what is great"....there is no in between.
Trixie..your friend can read ANY book....but she can't watch any movie. I used to read absolutely anything and everything...especially the forbidden stuff...because no one cared....but once I hired the movie all hell would break loose. I once read "Bridges In Madison County"....loved the book...and I was even lending it out to sisters in the Cong. I then hired the movie...I was told by my ex (an elder) to turn it off as it was about adultery. What a wanker he was....the book was more racey then the movie LOL. What a moron! The first thing I did when I left the borg and the ex was watch all the movies I was denied in the past...with titles that would make you blush....like "The Piano" LOL.
