I thought I was caught up in a Mad Max movie.

hello...i hope this is the proper place to pose my question.. i've been meeting with a fine jw couple for several months now and i have attended meetings with them twice at the kingdom hall.
a large segment of the congregation were people of color and it also seems that whenever i meet a jw on the street, they are more often than not african-american.
i was wondering if there was some explanation for this, or is just coincidence?
Hey there Iris10401
From my experience...I never noticed a racial connection to those who developed an interest in the JW faith. I think it depends on the area that you are associated with...and the economic growth in that area.
The JW faith appeals to low income earners or elderly lonely folk...as it offers a life of hope...a life better then what we currently have. People with financial substance are not usually enticed to join...the saying is 'they have their kingdom here on earth'. I can recall many well off householders being very rude and arrogant when I would engage in the preaching work and would try and preach to them...but the poor folk were always hospitable..generous...and kind. I see the relationship being more of a need for better things. Then again...it could just come down to manners.

there's one sure-fire way to tip off your jw friends and family that you're leaning apostate.... just stop insisting on calling jehovah "jehovah" all the time.
call him "god" more often.
talk about raised eyebrows and mumbled conversations over in the corner!
When they are dressed to leave for the meeting you should ask them if they are going to 'church'...you'll love the face drop stunned reaction lol.
The other one is my brother's favourite...when you drop your cigarette lighter you can say 'oohhhh JEEZUZ!!!!

every social group develops their own code words to identify themselves with that group.this is part of the study of semiotics.
jws have many code words.then there are semiotics for apostates.
i'll start the lists.
LOL@Francois
You reminded me of another one
Loose Conduct - dancing with someone not your mate

My favourite apostate word my brother taught me...JOHO - Jehovah's Witness
Joho words:
Not At Home - Field service jargon
the 'brothers' - the elders overseeing the congregation or the borg
Resurrection Hope - the hope of being resurrected in the new system
this 'system of things' - the current system ruled by satan
heavenly hope - the hope of the 144,000
great crowd - those with an earthly hope
little flock - another name for those with a 'heavenly hope'
Public Talk - Talk delivered to all interested ones on Sunday
Bible Student - poor soul we should pray for
Christendom - Christ related religions other than Johos
Babylon the Great - ALL religions other than Johos
materialistic - people who have nice things
Reaching Out - doing more in god's service
a 'simple eye' - not wanting more materially - to be content with a sadarse house, basic clothing and a window cleaning business
Territory - the area in which Johos will terrorise the neighbourhood
Ahhh...the memories...I could go on and on.

had to remove the info quickly.
Hi Geordie
We had an article published here in australia...it was the silent lambs story also...but I haven't seen anything published lately.
I think Australia is due for another 'shake up' and 'wake up' story aye!

what was it like growing up as a child, being a jw?
did you fear armageddon with every thunder storm?
agonize over the imminent death of all of your worldly playmates?
Mikepence
There are so many issues...but the feeling of being different was the worst experience as a child growing up in the borg. Not allowed to sing the national anthem...or salute the flag...or sing xmas carols, happy birthday or 'for he's a jolly good fellow'....I wasn't allowed to go to discos..parties...or wear the latest 'fad' fashions or hair cuts.
When I first left the borg...I wanted to indulge in the things that always fascinated me as a kid...the forbidden things...but I remember feeling guilty the first time I wrote out xmas cards...but deep inside I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to do it. The first xmas I only observed...as I was new to the whole thing and didn't know how I should react. By the third xmas I had overcome my guilt...it was the xmas just gone....and I bought our first xmas tree and decorations...and we had our first family xmas with presents and jingle bells music and all the festivities. I'll never forget it.
Also, my kids had their first birthday last year...on their birthdays they got presents and surprises and cakes with candles....the works. I will never forget how I felt seeing my kids enjoy something that I was denied as a child...and for the first time I am able to repay them for what I took from them all those years they were raised in the borg.

for those of you who go to the movies, please heed this warning.
do not go see "in the bedroom.
" this was only the second movie i ever walked out of.
What about A Beautiful Mind? Wouldnt mind seeing that...but its not here yet...I think it comes to Australia this week sometime.

i was thinkin the other day, it's a damn shame nobody has started a nationwide magazine company producing a magazine that picks out all of the watchtower's flaws, and that is brought door to door on saturday mornings to show jw's for the asses they are.
i would be the first one in line to get the latest copies.
i betcha it'd tear down the whole jw structure....too bad, some dreams are only that..... "no cool quote yet, but i'll think of one soon.

You won't get many volunteers I don't think...we've all been exploited for too long...giving up our time..money..resources and LIVES to spread the good news.
But the principle behind your idea is a good one.

i enjoy reading all your posts.
i have been lurking for months .
i was hoping that someone could tell me if we currently charge for literature in other countries or is it free like in the u.s. (just for voluntary contributions.
It is a donation offer here in Australia as well in NZ. When it first came into practice in NZ...everyone was encouraged to pay for their magazine order our of their own funds...at the usual price previously asked....
AND THEN...when the donation is received...they too should forward this donation on as we were told it was not ours to keep.
This 'double dipping' system used to bother me...as I would see some pioneer sisters paying for their magazine orders each month...trying to be righteous and not complain....and faithfully they would try and place these magazines knowing full well that they would never be compensated for their loss.
What a scam.
