i attended a meeting with mash (mcmaster association for secular humanists) the other day where we had an excellent guest speaker, a professor from the university of toronto who founded and runs talkorigins website.

for those that would like to see the lecture titled "evolution a theory and a fact" i will be posting it on-line in the next day or two and will post the link in this thread.. back to my question, after the speech when we took the speaker out for drinks we were all sharing experiences talking about how talkorigins helped us and the issue of jw's came up, people there were telling me that when jw's come to their door now if they state they are an atheists or don't believe in the bible they simply stop the conversation and go away.. is this an official change in tactics for the jw's?

it would be great if it were, i can think of only one reason for not wanting to try and preach to the new atheists out there, that being that people who do are getting persuaded by their arguments and leaving the church.. has anyone else heard anything like this?.

I think it depends on the witness. I was called on for quite some time earlier in the year by an elderly lady and I said right from the start that I was and atheist, had no beleif in the bible or religions at all. She called on me about a half dozen times with the second last time leaving me a brochure on trusting the bible. I used stick-it notes through out and cut the brochure apart (figuratively). The last time she called I gave it back to her and she said that it was for me to keep. I said, "You wanted my opinion of it, I left my opinion throughout." She never came back, but left me a card in the mailbox (she didn't knock on the door) saying how she now understands me better and loved talking to me and hopes to talk to me again. I'm sorry, I lied, she did come back once after that, to give me the Awake! on Keeping your children safe, but she didn't give me the Watchtower, and didn't talk anything JW.

I'm waiting for her to come back as I remember hearing somewhere that there's a new special Awake on the way that's supposed to prove the bible true, yet again.

Wii or XBOX 360 or Playstation -- which to buy?

it will be mostly for my daughter, age 11 and she loves horse type games mostly.

the wii looking interesting of course.

My 10 year old daughter loves our Wii. That's what I'd suggest, but my 7 year old son woulld kill for a 360. Can't please them all but remember whatever you do get, she'll like.

To all those who think the WT uses deliberate "subliminal" images...

(okay, i know i said i'd be taking a break from jwd, and i will, but i just remembered something that i felt necessary to post here because it was bugging me) .

there are some of you out there who believe the governing body meticulously crafts subliminal images that are hidden throughout the society's literature.

you say that it is impossible for these to be mere accidents or just the work of sloppy artists because there is so much painstaking review and every image must be approved by the gb before being published.

Does anyone remember that picture of the scarlet-colored beast WITH crowns?

i got my history a little mixed up in a post earlier tonight, trying to recall an error in a watchtower picture a few years ago.

the picture was of the scarlet-colored wild beast, but it had crowns.

the bible says this beast doesn't have crowns, it's the other one that has the crowns.

there seems to be a lot of hostility on the board toward atheists still and a lot of comments floating around like atheists are to preachy.

well i want to take a quick minute and deal with some of these issues.

to begin with, to make any statement regarding atheists in general would be false for several reasons.

In order to turn your "lower case god" into an "upper case God", you must present some sort of evidence as to why you do not view a "lower case god" as divine and why you view an "upper case God" as divine.

That's a matter of FAITH.
