by MungoBaobab init wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back.
that back had already broken.

I guess the one thing the turn the lightbulb on for me was when I was at a witness friends wedding. The elder giving the wedding talk said how the wedding rings had pagan backgrounds, but that JW's didn't recognize them like that. I thought "Wait a minute here!!". The main reason witnesses don't celebrate Christams, Halloween, Easter, and other holidays is because they say they have pagan origns. Then when a "worldly" person says that they don't recognize the pagan background and just like the family togetherness of the holiday, the witnesses say that's no excuse. The holidays still have pagan origins and are not right for Christians to celebrate. After that I really started looking at things in a different light. I started seeing things that really bothered me. Like not voting. They won't support their goverment, but they will take all the support the goverment will hand out.
Then other things started to bother me that happened before I was baptised. Like when I met this nice girl at a hall build. We started seeing each other and I made a few visits to her home to meet her parents. Next thing I know she won't return my phone calls. Then the brother I was studying with (the same one that gave the wedding talk) told me I had to stop seeing her because I wasn't baptised yet. Who are they to tell me who I can date. Another thing that really bothered me is how they made me swear I would keep going out in service before allowing me to get baptised. I mean this is my dedication to God, not to their rule system.
The straw that finally broke the camels back, happened when I moved away from home to a town where I knew no one. I started going to the meeting and made some friends, but was never invited over to socialize with the "brothers". Only recieved one phone call from the "brothers" in the 2 years I had been there. Then a caught the flu and was off work for 2 weeks and of course missed the meetings. Not one JW came to check on me, called to see why I was missing the meetings, or came to see how I was doing. The funny part is my co-workers and landlady both came to check on me and offered any help I needed. My landlady even brought me chicken soup. After getting better I went back to the meeting and the first thing I heard was "Where have you been, why have you been missing the meetings". Man, I felt like going off right there. But I controlled myself and just said I had been sick. I then met this amazing "worldly" girl and started dating her. Man you should have seen the brothers coming out of the woodwork then. All of them were trying to get me to stop dating her. Even my best friend tried to talk to me about it, but I think he was secretly happy for me. Shortly after that we had our Circuit Assembly. I remember sitting there alone, listening to the boring dribble coming from the stage and I said to myself. "That's it". And I just got up and left in the middle of the assembly. Never went back to a meeting again.
That was 8 years ago. I'm now married to that wonderful girl and I've never been happier with my life now that I'm out of the controlling cult.
Sorry if this was too long, but when you start thinking about it, so many things come to mind.

What is "Pagan" anyways?...
by Hecklerboy inwitnesses love to use the word "pagan", but i think few really even know what the word means.
i think most think of the word pagan as referring to some satan worshiping cult or other strange religion.
they alway say they don't celebrate the holidays because of it pagan origins.

Yeah, and they will even take a Christmas bonus and take full advantage of Christmas and other holiday sales.
Seems a little hypacritical to me

Witnesses love to use the word "Pagan", but I think few really even know what the word means. I think most think of the word Pagan as referring to some Satan worshiping cult or other strange religion. They alway say they don't celebrate the holidays because of it Pagan origins. Yet they wear wedding bands and use the modern calendar, both of which are based on "Pagan" beliefs.
So what does "Pagan" really mean. Here's a quote from the dictionary:
pa·gan [ páygən ] noun ( plural pa·gans ) 1. follower of a less popular religion: somebody who does not follow one of the world?s main religions, especially somebody who is not a Christian, Muslim, or Jew, and whose religion is regarded as questionable ( sometimes considered offensive ) 2. polytheist or pantheist: a follower of an ancient polytheistic or pantheistic religion 3. heathen: somebody who has no religion ( disapproving ) adjective 1. of a less popular religion: believing in or relating to a religion that is not one of the world?s main religions and is regarded as questionable 2. following polytheistic or pantheistic religion: believing in or relating to an ancient polytheistic or pantheistic religion 3. nonreligious: having no religion ( sometimes considered offensive ) [ 14th century. Via late Latin paganus from Latin, ?villager, civilian,? from pagus ?rural district? (source of English peasant ). ] pàygə nístik ] adjective -

I feel so sorry for these people. They can't have any fun in the bedroom without worrying if they are breaking some sacred Watchtower rule. I think I read in COC that some of the "brothers" back in the 70's wanted rules on what position were proper during sex.
I can hear it now: "Honey let's consult the society's new
rule bookpublication "Guide to sexual relations - What doesThe Governing BodyJehovah think?" before we begin our prescribe time to pay each other our dues"Would this be considered "Theocratic Love Making"?

Is your family close??...
by Hecklerboy ini was talking to a good friend of mine the other night on the phone and i was telling him about my wife wondering why my family isn't very close.
when we started thinking about it we both decided it was because we grew up jw's.
i would love to be closer to my family, but it just seems we have nothing to talk about.

I was talking to a good friend of mine the other night on the phone and I was telling him about my wife wondering why my family isn't very close. When we started thinking about it we both decided it was because we grew up JW's. All our "family" time was spent going to meetings, studying for meetings, going out in service, and going to assemblies. I never remember going on a vacation with my family. Like going to the beach for a week or even going to the park. Everything revolved around being a witness. He said the same about his family. Mind you my family wasn't even one of the super spiritual families. Just a single mom raising her 4 kids the best she can.
My wife's family is very close and I love being around them. I'm actually closer to my wife's family than I am my own. My mom and sister have only been to my house (we live 2 hours away) 3 times in the 10 years I've lived here. My two brothers have never been to my house. We don't even talk on the phone that much. I would love to be closer to my family, but it just seems we have nothing to talk about. All they know is the organization. They aren't impressed with my wife's ongoing education (master's in nursing) or my love of mountian biking so we never talk about that. Plus whenever I call my mom she is alway asking me when I'm going back to the meetings. I haven't set a foot in a kingdom hall in over 8 years and never will.
Oh well, enough rambling. Anyone else have this problem?

How many here grew up JW but had worldly friends?
by Jez inmy best friend was worldly all through elementary to high school.
we are still good friends.
i wonder if that led to our being a tad bit more open minded and aided in our exit???

I had a mix of "worldly" and "witness" friends. I actually made the decision on my own to stop hanging out with one of my "witness" friend. He started huffing gas and smoking (not at the same time ). I just didn't want to be around that. I'm still friends with with the rest of them. Of course my other "witness" friend is now DF'd and we talk allot on the phone. I'm still close to my worldly friends, even had one as my best man in my wedding.
It was funny how my mom was so strict about not letting my play sports in school or go to dances, but she never stopped me from have my friends.

Obligations to Friends
by StinkyPantz inare there any?
to restate: when is comes to being friends with someone, are you "obligated" to do certain things?
-
Hecklerboy
You should never feel obliged to do anything for a friend. That's what friendship is all about. You do it out of the love you feel for your friends, not because you owe it to them.
This reminds me of a quote I read somewhere: "A friend will come bail you out of jail in the middle of the night, but a true friend would be sitting beside you saying "Dude - we really f**ked up""

My Life
I hated having my life controlled by the Watchtower. Do this, Do that, Don't do this, Don't do that. It's never ending. I'll make the decisions in my life based on my judgement.
I would also have to give up some close friends that are Df'd.

I've never used the bottle opener yet, but yes it has to be the best mountain bike I've ever encountered. Will do just about anything and can take any abuse I can dish out.
