Hmmm, interesting. You know whenever I thought of my grandfather shunning us I always tended to think of The Color Purple and the character Shug being shunned by her minister father...

A possible 'cure' for shunning?
by Jim_TX inas a youngster... i remember seeing a movie called 'fiddler on the roof'.. in that movie - about a jewish family... three daughters who get married... one goes off and follows her heart - which means that she goes against 'tradition' of the jews.. as a result - her father - does the 'jewish' thing... and rips his garments while saying "i have no daughter.
" (very melodramatic.
) he then shuns her.. (sound familiar?).

Do witnesses picket when they are on strike?
by JH inwhen a company is on strike and employees picket outside the building with signs, do witness employees participate in any way?
usually there is a strike fund for those who picket.
what about the witnesses, how do they proceed when their company is on strike, and do they get the same amount of money as the others who picket?.

"If witnesses don't participate in strikes , why do they get the salary increases that the union fights for?"
Because Jehovah provided it? It's hypocritical like condemning the UN and then joining it. -

*"I understand Firpo describes himself as the Jacksons' "spiritual adviser."
Yeah, I saw him on CNN over this summer (?) and he was given that title as well as the title of "Jackson family spokesman."
*Happyout- I kind of gathered he was a bit off...I don't know why I keep harping on this Firpo Carr thing...just don't understand why he would be allowed to go on an Islamic speaking tour with Jermaine Jackson...unless, Jermaine's actually a JW posing as a Muslim American in order to convert Muslims to Dubism...Okay, I'll stop. -

I think I hate Mother Teresa now...
by Preston ini've been reading christopher hitchen's love poverty, and war.
it's a pretty good book that puts a lot of things in perspective regarding iraq, iran, pakistan...there's even a section on mother teresa.
this section...was probably the most interesting part of the whole book i have read so far.

I wasn't comparing it to the struggles of a 3rd worlder, I was trying to put her words on struggling in poverty into some kind of context.

"Well, you can be pretty goddamn sure that her context was far different than that of a westerner saying "I didn't grow up with much and it's not that I consider it a virtue but I do think that I learned much from it."
How the hell do you know this? Humans think so differently? And please don't give me a run down on Western this and Eastern that...
"Oh, I'm sorry, I'm suggesting that humans not take on another bullshit myth!"
I don't think anyone so far has said to take anything said of MT at face value and deify her. What I am saying is that it's pretty damn easy to look at someone after they're dead and demonize them. She was a person who made mistakes like everyone else on the face of the earth. so should that lessen anything she did that was good?
By the way, why are you so offended? -

"this woman collected billions from well-meaning Westerners and let the people in her care die horrible undignified deaths"
I don't know FD. I don't know all the facts. But about what you say here "She considered their pain to be a good thing." I don't know the context she said this in but I will say that I didn't grow up with much and it's not that I consider it a virtue but I do think that I learned much from it. I've learned a lot from pain. Could you tell me what context MT was taking about this? I'm curious... -

"if i can find people who may have been thinking the same way once as i am now then maybe i can figure out how to deal with all this"
Just hang on and stay on the forum. You'll find many that have gone through the same thing, I promise you.
