yeah, I know some of his writings but I went to an art school for undergrad where deconstruction was really pushed.

Jacques Derrida is dead
by Narkissos infrench philosopher jacques derrida died yesterday in paris, at the age of 74. .
he was a very original and profound thinker, widely known for his "deconstruction" theory which brought about some pretty fresh outlooks on philosophy, language and literature.
i unfortunately discovered his works much too late, but he was very helpful to me in my post-religious ramblings in the past few years.

Today's JW Is Yesterday's Failure!!!
by minimus inthe typical jehovah's witness no longer is the strong, spiritual giant.
lately, i hear more and more "very inactive" jws that haven't gone to a congregation meeting in years, still consider themselves good jws.
they are like "home baptists".

There could be more of it lately...I wouldn't know. I can say that I remember there being different playbooks. My family was looked down on because we didn't have any money and--other reasons unknown to me. If we missed a meeting there were 120 questions the next time we were present. But that lady who lived in the big 10 room house, drove a mercedes, and gave big donations would show up at the kingdom hall once a year and she was always talked about like she was an upstanding JW.

What are the long term effects of having your life turn out to be a lie?
by sleepy inwhat do you believe are the long term effects of having your life turn out to be a lie?.
can a person really be brough up a jehovahs witness and live that life for 20,30,40 or more years and walk away unaffected?.
are the effects similair to say a person who doesn't know they have been adopted and finds out only as an adult their "parents" are not their real ones?.

there was a song back in the late 80s or early 90s called Seventeen by some hair metal band and all I could think was that that was the audience they were going after...perverts and young girls.

I think the first thing I did when my family left was get into an arguement with my older brother when he kept asking "what if they're right?"

I think you can move on but it's always going to be there. My family left when I was 15 and for a long time (up until recently as a matter a fact) I thought I was able to just walk away. But I've realized that the way I was raised did impact me...some of my closest friends don't know I was a Jehovah's Witness. Maybe I avoid talking about it with people because I'll get emotional about it or I avoid it because the conversation always starts the same way, "you're probably not really going to understand this but I was raised a Jehovah's Witness....." Some times I can't even speak to my mother about it because she chose it and I didn't. I think there's a difference there. I didn't have any choice in the matter and I didn't know anything different until we left.

Do JW's disfellowship or reprove JW's for celebrating Holidays and birthday
by booker-t ini remember when i was growing up in the 70's and 80's the thought of even looking at a birthday card was thought to be satanic.
now i hear that jw's are alittle lax on celebrating holidays.
my niece who is not a jw but lives with my mom who is a devout jw had christmas lights in her room and the elders came over to my mom's house and did not raise cain and abel.

As far as my experience goes, it was a strict NO on any holidays-including birthdays...because afterall John the Baptist had his hear cut off because of a birthday. I don't remember any witnesses celebrating anything BUT I also remember there being different rule books for different people...

Yeah, there was a lady at my kingdom hall who "went away" and then all the talk was about how her mother caught her trying to hold her 2 toddlers down in the running bathtub. And then there was the elder who's wife got disfellowshipped after going to other elders about her husband molesting their four daughters. You want more?
