I do. I usually don't give to church run groups but if it's some church I know has a good background (not demanding converting before helping) then I don't have a problem with it.

by GermanXJW inhow do you feel when donating to charities?
do you make choices?
of course you will check if the organization is serious but do you also check if it has a religious background?

Do you think that JW's will print a "new" book on Revelations?
by booker-t inthe wts has printed several books on revelation since it's inception in 1879. many of the prophecies that were predicted in the studies in the scriptures book failed miserably.
next the two "light" books the same predictions were reworded failed also.
the society tried again with the 60's books then is the finished mystery of god book and the babylon the great has fallen book.

Adam was perfect,...Right?
by prophecor inmy wife and i were discussing adam being a perfect creation of god.
we as jw's, have always associated adam with being such, but she tosses me a curveball and does not necessairily agree to the standard jw theology.
she believes that had adam been perfect, the sins of the fathers would never have been visited upon his children, we would never have been locked out of paradise and all the ills of this world would never have been an issue.

There's like 2,000 Americans missing, plus a couple thousand other are Westerners missing. Yes, these countries were missing a warning system but no, even if they had a warning system there would still be many dead. Afterall, it was a huge earthquake that they say slightly knocked the Earth of it's axis.
By the way, Sri Lanka is a very modern for the most part. So it's not like we're speaking of the most backwards countries here.
How many signs did they have? How much time did they have to make it to higher ground? How many of us would have seen the sea line go back and not have been awe struck and not known what to do? Go North? In India that would mean what, Afghanistan? Why go north? I don't hear that question being asked of people in Florida hit by all the hurricanes -or the people in middle america (hurricane alley) being asked why they don't move north....so, maybe the point of the original questions isn't coming through?

Positive Islamic Thread
by eyeslice inthere has been a bit of stick about the negative comments about islam on this board, so i thought i would start a positive thread.. towards the end of the 90s, i lived for a year in an asian country with a population of over 100 million muslims.
all muslims i came across were honest, decent people.. a couple of years back, i went to work in iran for a couple of weeks.
as a result i had a couple days off at the weekend, which also happened to coincide with a public holiday.

hmmm...maybe we should work on our own before we point fingers at others. We have many things wrong in our own Western culture as well.
My aunt lived in Iran for 3 years and she didn't have any bad experiences. She still writes to friends in Iran.

Which Ones Got To YOU?
by Sunspot in.
rather than hijacking lostreality's "question" topic, and frannie's post---i began to think of movies that were particularly moving to me...... there have been many throughout the years, but right off the top of my head i'd have to say "imitation of life" (lana turner), "love is a many splendored thing" (william holden), "the way we were" (barbra streisand) and "evergreen" (barbra streisand) that really made me lose it in the theater.. what movies struck *you* the hardest?.
annie....who should have invested in the kleenex corp)

Far Away, So Close -Wim Wenders
Elling -Petter Naes
Requiem for a Dream- not only does it make me cry, it leaves me depressed for days...
Taste of Cherry -Abbas Kiarostami --always kind of gets me.
Murder On A Sunday Morning (documentary) - how can you watch the part where the mother is testifying and not cry?
Children of Heaven -Majid Majidi --it's kind of predictable but it's still tugs at the heart strings.
.....and yes, The Color Purple has me crying like a baby every time.

A Confederacy of Dunces--hilarious book. I looked like one of those crazy people on public transit when I'd read it on the bus--couldn't stop myself from laughing outloud.
Let It Blurt:The Life & Times of Lester Bangs, America's Greatest Rock Critic--great book. Bang's grew up JW and although I think the author gets some of the JW doctrine wrong it's still a good read and insightful.
I'm going to start Expecting Armageddon: Essential Readings in Failed Prophecy...several people have suggested it. I hope it's good.

There were a lot of muslims in the neighborhood I grew up in. As a JW kid I was pretty much influenced by the times I went out on service where pioneers would knock on a door and upon hearing the words "we're muslim" they'd take me by the arm and high-tail it out of the muslim's vacinty.
By the time I was 11 though most of my friends were in my neighborhood and not JW. Many were muslim. We just did what kids did--played and didn't talk religion. By the time I was 13 I was already a bit embarrassed about being a JW and I remember this kid (who was muslim) asking how come I didn't celebrate Christmas and telling him. As time went on he asked me other questions about being a JW and at some point I remember telling him that JWs believed if you weren't a JW you would die. He told me that was terrible because even though I didn't believe in his religion he didn't think I was going to die...and he thought god was more merciful than I did. That was the first major seed of doubt planted in me.
Thanks for starting this thread eyeslice.
