  Do you want/expect your kids to take care of you when you're old?

  i had a conversation with my daughter tonight that got me pretty upset, and i'm wondering if i'm expecting too much from my kids.. both my kids went to outstanding colleges, have landed very well-paying jobs, and have very bright financial futures ahead of them.

  this makes me especially happy because my husband and i have always had to struggle financially (we both grew up jws and never got to go to college.

  ) it was a sacrifice for us to send them to college, but i would do it all again in a heartbeat.

  I don't expect anyone to do anything for me. If it doesn't come from the heart or there's an ulterior motive, I really don't want it. Is it their moral responsibility to do what they can to help mom/dad? Absolutely! Depending on their circumstances, they should be able to help in some small way. Again, that's for them to decide. I can appreciate how you feel. I guess that's why they tell parents that their financial needs for later in life should be put ahead of paying for kids' higher education if that will jeopardize mom/dad's savings. It certainly is a hard decision as we want the best for our kids.

  From personal experience, some do let the elders know that they have been contacted by you. Then you get THE CALL: time is short, we're deep into the time of the end, we would like to see you again, blah, blah, blah......... And then the clincher: (After you've said you are not coming back)

  "Then you know that so and so can't be talking with you."

  You have to decide if you want to go down that path and what affect it will have on you. If you do, then take it slow and choose your words carefully as she may be looking for answers to her doubts. Wish you the best with this.

  Need some sage JWN advice

  it has been two years since my family stopped attending and being "active".

  my daughter is in her 30's settled and teaching with a masters degree she got post her separation and divorce four years ago from a witness, she is remaried and happy.

  we just celebrated our first xmas since joining jw in the early 80's.. my wife now has increasing bouts of extreme anger (that border on violence) directed primarily at me for wasting twenty years of her life and causing my daughter to have periodic problems with flashbacks and anxiety.

  Perhaps at some point, SM, your wife would agree to read others' experiences on this thread. It would validate her feelings and possibly give her hope that one can heal.

  For most people whenever a deeply close relationship ends there are doubts and heartache including anger, frustration and hurt - it is a loss. To work through this is a PROCESS. This process is different for everyone. For some, they never recover, but choose to stay in a victim state. Others make the decision that they have to find a place for the loss in order to move on in life, one step at a time, to find joy again. It hurts and is very hard to face up to our responsibility in a lost relationship. We all gain something (I'm not referring to material things here) from these relationships otherwise we wouldn't have got involved in the first place - be it w/another human being or god.

  We should remember that all of our experiences, present or past, have made us who we are today. We can choose to take away that which was good and grow, or we can make the choice to always blame others for our miserable state and stay stuck in it thereby missing opportunities to be happy.

  As rebel8 suggested, if your wife is "stuck" in the process of healing, professional help would give her the "tools" to be able to move forward if that is her choice. I wish your family the best.

  I plan to watch "Gone, Baby, Gone" when I can get it from the library. Right now it's out. I did read Dennis Lehane's GBG and it was a great book!

  Thought the "violence" fit the story line in "The Town".

  it seems that the wt is guilty of illegally dumping printing chemicals (or as they like to say "ruining the earth") in upstate new york.

  anyway... i was connected with the mob somehow.

  I've woke up from dreams - actually nightmares - in a sweat and crying, but also I've had some good dreams that would make a great movie script. Some dreams are so real when I wake up I'm trying to figure out if it actually happened or not.

  It is a video of a silverback gorilla and his family - female + 3 babies coming up to a sitting tourist. It only happens rarely as they are a very solitary animal. The babies and mom touch the man's hair and the female gives him a kiss on the ear all the while Dad looks on. Can you imagine a huge silverback sitting right behind you? I'd s***.

  I'll watch for it on YouTube.
