  Independence Day and African Americans

  a black friend of mine will not celebrate the 4th of july.

  he feels it's a mockery since black people were still slaves when the country gained its independence.. i wanted to hear what other people think of that.

  that's the first person i've ever heard mention it, but i never thought about that.

  Hey jimmy,

  Good question. I'll never give up a day off dude or an excuse to have a party. that's not the only reason why I celebrate the 4th though. I think documents like the Declaration of Indepedence contain thoughts and principles that uniquely give oppotunity to all citizens of this nation of ours. Ppl may hinder access to them, but they are still there and you can't hold ppl down forever. So , I'm proud to be a part of this country and I think I'm fortunate to be alive in this part of the world. I really do, ppl in other countries seem to have it so hard.

  Things certainly do seem to be shaping up that way don't they. It seems that here in this country we may be moving towards the class systems of older cultures and societies. Although a lot of opportnity sytil exists in this country, we seem to be moving toward the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor type society.

  hey everyone, i was hesitant to post this article i read because abortion debates can turn so ugly so fast.

  so i thought about it for and decided i should post it because it is important for those of us who value the right the choose to be aware of what that really means here in the us.

  this article is from the weekly alternative newspaper here in the minneapolis/st.

  Lay off the Guiness dude! I also said we don't need any more abortion opposition. Actually, I think it should be treated like any other medical procedure. Women should at least have access to it becuase sometime's it's needed. However, ppl in this country need to be better informed about sex. If they were then there wouldn't be all the controversy over birth control and condoms. They both work damn good, save ppl a lot of heartache. You'd be surprised, by the opposiotion in this country to teach kids how to use these properly.
  The article Peace quoted said that most of the ppl seeking abortions were young couples trying to get out of a jam. So, I feel there is a need to change the perception of birth control in this country. It needs to stop being looked upon as a hassle and really start being promoted as the thing responsible ppl do. There's too much fear associated with sex in this country. More emphasis needs to be put on being responsible and more open about sex.

  I agree with you on this one. What we need in this country is more sex education. Not more abortions, not more abortion opposition. IMO, they both traumatize women. If we gave the young ppl in our country a better more open outlook on sex, then you would see many of the problems w/ sex in our society greatly diminish.

  Spirituality, demystified, is simply a natural aspect of human psychology. Much of what falls under the banner of the spiritual has nothing to do with belief in spirits or deities or anything supernatural. Rather, it has to do with consciously pursuing a meaningful life, according to however one might define what makes life meaningful.

  I like that statement. I think it's true. Spirituality has nothing to do with doctrine, placing magazines, commenting at meetings or how anyhours you put on a timesheet. It is all about how you live your life and how you treat others, period.

  I have JW's staying with me...help!

  i have had my jw cousin and his wife and three children staying at my house since sunday.

  i thought i'd just share a few experiences with you all.. my husband and i are marveling at the numerous compromises they have made since coming here to washington state from wisconsin.

  they are here to visit his disfellowshipped mother who has cancer.

  by popular demand, i am yielding to pressure, to tell a story about our very own veniceit.. in march, venice and her parents were visiting us here in washington state, and we all had dinner at our daughter's home one evening.

  (my daughter posts here as princess) princess's son, 4 years old, was quite taken with venice and was showing her around the house.
