da vinci code??

anyone know what it is about?

I read it a couple of weeks ago and loved it - it is entertaining, but a little research does put the multitude of conspiracy theories in the book in perspective. It wasn't life changing - just a good read with some entertaining concepts. I won't say too much as I will spoil the plot, but it did make me wish i had read it before I whisked round the Louvre in Paris last February, but then again I was wearing silly heels and whisking round was the only option. It certainly offers an interesting story behind the mona lisa by da vinci which I always thought a singularly unremarkable picture. The most interesting theory was the one behind the Last Supper painting and I have to say upon reinspection the picture of John the Baptist beside Jesus does look decidely feminine!

It's a strange thing when you find that people in the world are far better that those you thought were going to inherit the world!

Gill - you are so right. One of the first things that happened to me when I was made to leave home was the women at the supermarket I worked at, who hardly knew me, got a collection together of all the things I might need, like blankets, crockery, cutlery, towels, kettles, irons - everything because I literally had nothing but my books and the clothes I stood up in. That really moved me. They put christianity into practice unlike the witnesses who had grown up with me - seen me 4 or 5 times a week for years and now disowned me.

did being a witness make you arrogant at school/work?

i think that one of the lack of social skills the jws kindly invested me with was an acute sense of arrogance of being better than the rest.. this made me a very disruptive class member as i would twist my parents twist on the religion to make ridiculous points - which i did enjoy!

after studying the new (at the time) school brochure about extra-curricular activities the whole english class got dentention of ten minutes at schools out and the way my heart pumped as i packed up my stuff and made to leave.

the teacher yelled at me - what did i think i was doing?

i've seen him debate religion with people and the other person would quote scripture and make a good case for their beliefs and all he' d do is shake his head and demand the person believe he was right.

Candidlynuts - your ex sounds like my father! I love him dearly, but he would have this superior (I know something you dont know your poor pagan nitwit) mock-compassionate smile. And I am ashamed to say I have used it once or twice when I haven't a clue what to say next in an argument.

my name is ayernye... sometimes i go by stephan... it used to be stephen mcguire back when i was a witness in the wilmington and groton massachusetts congregations from '83 - '94.

was a pioneer and ministerial servant and was married for two of those years.

with tremendous agony and confusion, i moved far away to discover myself... took years to adjust to my new reality... drugs... drinking... anything to numb my tired brain... but the transformation was eventual and so worth it... of course... i am now my own person... mostly happy, adjusted and living my life to the best i can... .

thanks for regurgitating it bryan! i'd have missed it otherwise. I might be up for this. And I have incidentally posted my picture - basically because it has been so long since my parents saw me even if they ever got the internet, which i doubt, they would never recognise me anyway. as i see it it couldnt do me that much harm.

i've been apart of all your stories......been lurking here since 03. you all have helped me in many ways .....i feel like i'm stepping out of the little puddle and am looking at a big ocean....so it is sink or swim for my life back.....and by reading here i feel like i am safe.....though a bit scarey!

I think I did just that ( no paddling in the shallow end - just dove straight in) without, in my social ineptness, introducing myself, but as a newbie too I would like to say hi and welcome.but i think i would have been too shy to start a thread saying hi anyway even if i'd known it was the right ettiquette! I wish I had lurked a little but pooter problems prevented me from doing so when i joined).

but also thanks to everyone else here for their openess and liberal mindness. how refreshing to taste "lifes water free" for real!

the sheer suicidal lonliness of being marked at 14 and not able to associate in or out of the truth.

feeling compelled to get baptised at 13.

never being good enough for my missionary parents - ever ever ever.

having to make the decision to toe the line or be homeless if I didnt

the look on my mothers face as she saw my nicotine stained fingers when i bumped into her n the street a few weeks after i left.

waking up in hospital after an overdose at 16 still as a baptised witness to find no witness friends came to see me and the joy and relief, overwhelmingly, as every single wordly person and their extended family came to see me and brought me presents and love and that i still thought satan must have sent them.

Why Are Some Superstitions Okay?

this is one of the things i never understood as a jw.

i was told that jws were not superstitious people.

as followers of the true god jehovah, we weren't to give in to false beliefs, even if others were practicing them.

Swan this entire thread and all the responses i have me in fits of giggles!

My parents obviously decided to subscribe to the charity/thirft shop thingy because we were so hard up all our clothes were second hand. they had their own personal take - which was that anything they personaly didnt agree with was demonised - this included watching Knightrider - cos that car had to be demonised right cos it spoke to david hasslehoff. I'm not sure how they deal with the new in-car mapping systems now!

They had a bible study who was into black sabbath - i remember the bonfire they had the night she decided to brun all those albums!

When I left and was listening to Ozzy OSborne when I was 16 I was terrified when i realised he was from black sabbath. When I was getting reinstated they were first to go! LOL! followed by Guns and Roses. Interestingly though GnR was the album I reacquired each time i got disfellowshipped and then subsequently destroyed each time I got reinstated. LOL!

Has anyne else been through that ridiculous "purging" process?

if I had a penny for every album/book/movie i had to destroy....

My calm reply in front of the glass was that I had been told not to indulge in extra-curricular activites adding snidley that my parents would be very angry if I remained behind with a male teacher as that opened me up to sexual abuse. LOL! then i left!

I felt sorry for that poor teacher! And it helped that I got loads of respect from my school mates for doing that!

And finally I did count 5 minutes time on my report sheet for witnessing! hehehehe

What did you do during school assemblies?

in my school the two jw kids sat out of assemblies and i always wondered what they got up during that time.

i always wanted to have the courage to say i had religious objections to assemblies but to be honest i just hated siting cross legged on the wooden floor for ages.

anyone experience sitting out assemblies (or whatever your school equivelant is) and what did you do?

She made sure her son only stayed a day and when they were finished playing, she drove all the way to Nanaimo (which includes a ferry trip) to pick him up and take him home.

Classicist - my dad did the same thing. When I was 15 there was a school trip I HAD to go on as it was part of the coursework for my Georgaphy GCSE. So I travelled in my dad's car behind the minibus with my class 150 miles or so to Yorkshire, did the field trip and then my dad took me to stay in a guesthouse for the night before returning me to my classmates for part 2 of the field trip. It was embarrassing, but by this point most of my class mates knew how weird I was!
