Witnesses and alcoholism

my jw husband has made me promise to let him die rather than approve a blood transfusion because of bible doctrine; however, the same bible speaks against alcoholism and drunkeness and yet he continues to drink and sometimes gets absolutely smashed.. last night we were at a non-jw staff party for my place of employment, and he lost any shred of dignity through his heavy drinking.

we got home at 3 a.m. and he jumped out of bed at 8:20 and said, "i have to get to book study; i'm reading today.

(it behooves me how he can do this time and again without even taking so much as an asparin!).

If the medical community put alcohol in blood transfusions the Witnesses would burn their No Blood Cards.

An astute conclusion, JAVA! JWs sure love those scriptures that permit alcohol (in moderation). Very comforting scriptures indeed - slurp, slurp...

Cult-thinking allows individuals to carry on with their individual private "sins" whilst making a huge public noise about the more esoteric, extreme beliefs. I have a JW aunt who for years has been one of the loudest defenders of the JW blood issue. However, she presently faces a significant medical-related need to have blood, and my mother informs me my aunt has become very quiet on the blood issue. It would not surprise me if she does what unknown numbers of JWs do in such circumstances: Quietly agree to the blood.

Four Years and Then?

i took my wife out for breakfast this morning and on the way back home as we walked through the park about 10:30 am, we saw the group doing park witnessing.

i approached two elders and greeted them, this, after four years of not hearing anything from them.

it was just as if it was yesterday, nothing has changed.

do you find you start doubting your decision to fade when they act like that?

When people are unexpectedly nice to me - whether they be JWs or others - I acknowledge how it can unsettle me. However, since I know how robotically wafer-thin the JW "niceness" is, I quickly come to my senses.

JWs are experts at being so "nice" to lost souls, but as soon as those lost souls begin to assert themselves, the JW "niceness" evaporates only to be replaced by the repulsive switching off of any "Christian" love.

your mom raises yer sorry arse as a dub and you both grow up knockin on doors together..........then you turn into an apostate heathen bastard.

how does the witness one go to the meetings and out in service....and how do you the poor apostate bastard go to apostafests and stuff?

All this "Hush Hush" stuff's been going on for years. Every now and then a few brave souls manage to lift up their heads and speak their minds, then Thwack! they're out on their backs. Nothing new, I'd say.

Isn't this fairly typical JW behaviour though: Be pretty lukewarm and even hypocrtical in the "truth" and yet mindelessly cling to the more bizarre teachings - as if expecting a special dispensation from the Big Guy in the sky?

Something I've wondered about for many a year.......

o.k..... i've been out of "the truth" for about 10 yrs now.... .

so when i was in i was still a child, and someting just didn't sit right with my child like mind..... whats the deal with not having any women elders....?.

did i miss that watchtower article somwhere....?.

1 Corinthians 14:34-35..."...let the women keep silent in the congregations, for it is not permitted for them to speak, but let them be in subjection, even as the Law says....it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in a congregation."

Misogyny has its roots in the Bible. It's Christian flowering owes a huge debt to the besk known misogynist of all time: The apostle Paul. Sure, Paul "loved" women; but only provided they knew their place in the "order" of things.

From the JWs perspective, you must have seemed like a lost sheep. There's one way to tell if the hugs were genuine: In their presence, exhibit even a hint of being able to now think for yourself. My, how those JWs will vanish!

This thread has had me reaching for the Panadol, but I'm determined to stay the course.

What if the disfellowshipped Siamese twin had a change of heart (one or two?) and wanted to return to J-dubdom just when the other "faithful" twin started to doubt the Watchtower? These twins have such dreadful individual timing.

Maybe even at that point the judicial committee could be forgiven for screaming "We quit!" as they rush headlong out of the Kingdom Hall into a street full of fast moving vehicles. Splat!

there have been posts here that indicate the kh building work may be slowing in the u.s., and that there is consolidation of the congos going on.

if that is true why don't we see the society's published numbers on the decline?

my next question is, heaven forbid, you don't suppose they're inflating the membership numbers do you?

The year is 2015. JWs struggle with huge ongoing dropouts from the active publisher ranks. It's embarrassing and very anxiety-provoking. So, the GB finally relents and allows a new category for the end-of-year statistics:

Peak Number of IPs ("Interested Persons").

Criteria for this category: Householders who say that they have read at least one page of the latest Awake! mailed to them (now published 6 times a year).

Skip to 2016: Latest Watchtower shows huge increases in IPs compared with previous year - and this salient statistic is seized as proof that this is the truth. Desperation never looked so desperate...

if that is true why don't we see the society's published numbers on the decline?

But it does bring older ones in nursing homes and homebound back into the statistics.

There goes another shattered dream! All those hapless JWs reaching nursing home age who will now feel the pressure to preach for at least 15 minutes to be part of the statistics. Talk about a captive audience.
