The "love" of JW's is conditional upon good behavior (following the JW rules, meetings, service, etc.) Jehovah's love to them is conditional (same activities). No service, no meetings, no love.
I am sure there are a few exceptions, but JW's view of "love" is very warped and conditional.
FTR, I do think your JW relatives care for you, but the've lost the ability to demonstrate it normally because they've been brainwashed by a cult which tells them your fundamentally evil for leaving the JWs.

Also, sounds like ancient mythology: if the crops failed, you've offended the gods. If a child dies, you did something wrong (e.g. god punishing David/Bathsheba). Glad he had the good sense to apologize, as opposed to say, suing the magazine (doubt he'd have a case). In any event, characterizing his homeland as a "dumb puppy" that could agressively bite and hurt others (which metaphor he never denied he used) doesn't leave a whole lot of wiggle room for his "positive" American sentiments.

Personally, I think some Canadians doth protest to much. They spend far, far more time comparing themselves to the US (always favorably for Canada, of course) than is reasonably healthy. So you're not the star quarterback. Get over it!!!!

my first memory of questioning whether the revered bethel experience might be somewhat less than what was advertised was:.
Sorry, third party story...but yes, a guy I knew who was a Bethelite, and whose brother is now an elder, and both renovated my parents house, jumped off a bridge to commit suicide (in NY). Not too much discussion on it. Whatever discussion there was, centered on his "personal problems", of course.
Then another couple my mother and I visited many years ago while touring Bethel, for some reason got divorced and both left Bethel. Their fault of course. They were indeed characterized as "going off the deep end." They were some of the most warm, charismatic people I had encountered in my short JW life up to that point. I'm proud of them both.

Ah hem...but excuse me for pointing out what I believe is the obvious. Exactly how, historically, has Italy been "run"? Do you think their values differ from those of the US? For those who migrated from Italy to the US, do you think they had a particular view of government, which influenced their actions?
If you are looking to Italy for some US benchmark, sorry, I'm not with you.
we have all read and watched so many of the child abuse / sexual abuse scandals, and it makes us all sick to our stomachs, i want to touch on a different kind of abuse, i am not trying to draw a parellel between child abuse and being abused.
the abuse i am talking about is just as bad but so different.
i remember growing up a jw, basically having no choice, whether i wanted to go to the meetings or in service, and i always resented this in my parents.
"I had a good friend who HAD to go in service every saturday. Her dad (the PO) would tell them if they were sick he wanted to see the proof in a jar.....so if they puked or had the runs they had to bottle it as proof to stay home......"
OMG. What about having menstrual cramps (one I used). Would a used tampon suffice?
Sick indeed. Just reinforces the fact that meetings and service, to most kids ARE *punishment*. And most parents know it.
