I was so sorry to hear about John Ritter. He seemed so perenially young and funny. Only 54. I felt extremely sad to hear that he basically died from an unknown heart ailment/defect. Guess even the rich can get overlooked (or overlook) something that may bring them down to soon.

What's the most ridiculous thing you were ever counselled on?
by micheal inone of the cornerstones of jw's is counsel.
they just love to give counsel and many times they will literally make things up just for the sake of counsel.
i was once counselled for joking around too much.

"It is so hard to fathom that these stupid, uneducated, idiotic. short-sighted men actually provide advice and counsel to people!!"
Micheal: tell me about it. The highlight of the overweight guy's advice included "there's nothing wrong with having a burger, but just skip the fries if you are concerned about your weight."
I kid you not.
I certainly hope the JW's at least consider counseling with licensed medical/psychological professionals for people with similar problems now...

One more PAGAN thing left to do!
by Beans inwell i think i have done it all now, for the first time i have placed a political sign on my lawn depicting my stand for a political party.
as we are having a provincial election on october 2nd and people in my neck of the woods generally do not place signs on there lawn as in the big city i am very proud to stand up for what i believe will be better for this province!.

Congratulations! A milestone.
Not sure what your current situation is, but I bet the JW spy network will be thrown in a tizzy if/when they see it...

"Good for you...and I concur with your stated goal of ousting Grey Out Davis. I've been registered to vote for 21 years and have yet to be called for Jury Duty."
Maybe it was just a fluke, but my husband registered last election and got called very shortly thereafter. I didn't. Maybe just a theory; maybe a regional thing.
No matter. I'd sit on jury duty for a year if it meant getting Davis outl.

Along a different line, as a teenager I started showing symptoms of anorexia (gee, couldn't have anything to do with being raised in a repressive, controlling religion, could it?) My mom took me to a doctor, who recommended counseling. So what did mom do? She invited a team of elders over to counsel me. I'm sitting there getting diet advice from an elder whose at least 50 pounds overweight, and another one whose about 60 years old and as in touch with this sort of problem as a garden snail.
Obviously, my problem was the result of some spirtual deficiency.

Yes...I voted for the first time in the Clinton run. I got snagged (or had the privilege!) of jury duty duty, and am sure it was due to that...I didn't vote in the last presidential election, didn't like either Bush or Gore, and I didn't think they were worth risking jury duty.
Just got my California registration card in the mail today. Getting Gray Davis out IS worth risking getting jury duty. This loser's got to go.

Here's a Good Example of Elder Humility!
by Voyager inthis elder refers to (himself)14 times in this article.
james 4: 16 reminds us, "but now you take pride in your self-assuming brags.
all such taking of pride is wicked.

Sounds like one hellava guy...
It does look like a resume. If he really wants work, major screw-up in stating he's a JW elder and even providing a JW link (interesting article highlighted there btw, on how the entire world is in the demonic hands of the Satan, complete with "proof" that demons possess houses and make noises...")
Wouldn't touch that guy with a 10-foot-poll to do any consulting for me. Not even to mow my lawn.

Apparently Pinatas are ' no big deal'. What's next? Birthdays?
by xjw_b12 ini always thought the society frowned upon the use of pinatas, if not discouraging the use of them all together.
apparently the wts has decided to avoid insulting the brothers in mexico.

“Nowadays the Posada in Mexico features disorder, drunkenness and criminal activity. The celebrations are used as an excuse for wild and immoral living. Persons frequently are killed, and others are robbed and injured. Police are kept extra busy during these celebrations,”
This hopscotch rationale of the JWs always got to me (even as a small child I found it stupid). Don’t do birthdays because the only birthday mentioned in the Bible featured excesses, and finally, the beheading of John the Baptist…Christmas is associated with the pagan festival of Saturnalia…Halloween, we all know the demonic/religious origin of that one. All stupid excuses to make sure JW’s don’t get to happy, and to make sure they feel radically different from the rest of the world, looking down on them, so as to solidify their isolationism. I agree, they’ve got to do something because they're going to continue to lose numbers and not be able to attract people with their “no fun” policy. -

Greeting Cards for JW Situations -- Let's Get Creative!
by cruzanheart infollowing a train of thought started by metatron, i think someone should start a line of greeting cards, a la hallmark, just for jws and those oh-so-sticky situations.

How about this (from a former spouse):
"Congratulations! You are officially free to scriptually remarry. I confess to committing fornication, as outlined in one or more of the activities listed below:
___Straight male/female genitalial sex
___Male/female anal/oral/misc sex***
___Homosexual acts (including but not limited to: oral/anal/misc)
___Bestiality***
****Please consult your local governing body to determine whether this actually qualifies "fornication" which would scriptually free you to remarriage.
(I know many a separated/divorced JW who would have loved to get this card!)

"Five months after we liberated Iraq, a collection of killers is desperately trying to undermine Iraq's progress and throw the country into chaos. … Some of the attackers are foreign terrorists, who have come to Iraq to pursue their war on America and other free nations. … The terrorists have a strategic goal. They want us to leave Iraq before our work is done. They want to shake the will of the civilized world. In the past, the terrorists have cited the examples of Beirut and Somalia, claiming that if you inflict harm on Americans, we will run from a challenge. In this, they are mistaken. ... We will do what is necessary, we will spend what is necessary, to achieve this essential victory in the war on terror.
Second, Bush argued that ousting Arab tyrants is inherently necessary to the war on terror:
The Middle East will either become a place of progress and peace, or it will be an exporter of violence and terror that takes more lives in America and in other free nations. The triumph of democracy and tolerance in Iraq, in Afghanistan and beyond would be a grave setback for international terrorism. The terrorists thrive on the support of tyrants and the resentments of oppressed peoples. When tyrants fall and resentment gives way to hope, men and women in every culture reject the ideologies of terror and turn to the pursuits of peace.
Think for a minute about what these two arguments entail. The first justifies any war in which, as a result of our actions, terrorists attack our troops. Imagine an invasion of Cuba, whose dictator has long rankled Bush and would be easier to topple than Saddam was. No doubt al-Qaida and other terrorist groups would send agents to try to kill the occupying troops. Bush could then defend the occupation as part of the "war on terror.""
Huh? I'm not seeing YOUR argument here. Are you suggesting that Afghanistan was better under the Taliban? What about human rights, esp those of women in that regime? Any changes now, ya think? What about the Iraqi people. All was hunky dorey under the benevolent Saddam's rule? Ah, don't dare try to combine/compare the two! They were totally, completely separate sovereign regimes! Forget the fact that bin Laden and Saddam were both inhuman dictators who had no regard for human life, who hated America with a blinding passion, whose tactics and ethnocentrism was similar to Hitler's.
Nope, don't compromise the health and welfare of our troops to end the despotic, highly threatening reign of two of the world's most heinous leaders. Geeze, as much as liberals try to appear "concerned" with human rights, they sure take an isolationist view when it comes to major threats to the world.
The second argument is equally fraught with implications. Yes, tyranny breeds terrorism. But if the "war on terror" requires us to overthrow tyrants just because they're tyrants, we'll be at war for the rest of your life. These two guys WERE incredibly influencial in terrorist activities. What, exactly do you object to in getting them out?
