Interesting that this "scary" rumor is circulating now. As I posted a few days ago, my local (lib) paper ran an article on how Americans are enlisting and reenlisting in virtually all branches of the military at record highs.

Can someone be "saved" just by reading the Bible?
by somebodylovesme inawhile back, i read one of those pages with questions to ask jws.
one question was something to the effect of: "can someone be saved by just reading the bible?
" -- and the page said the bible says that this is true, but (obviously) witnesses teach the obvious.

If the person stayed home to read the bible while the rest of their family drove to the beach and were subsquently all killed in a head on collision with a drunk driver....then yes, I would say that person was saved by reading the Bible.

question: why are humans worth more than animals?
by Realist inok putting religious reasoning aside what is a rational reason why humans are viewed worth more than higher animals?
why is a human worth more than lets say a chimp, a pig or a cow?.
neurophysiological studies show that animals suffer probably just as much as humans....but similar to little children they cannot understand the pain and express it as human adults can.

It all comes down to the food chain. If I can figure out how to eat you, I'm worth more than you.
That said, last night I heard my husband let out an "Oh my God." I asked what happed. A bird had flown directly into our kitchen window. My husband peered out into the yard; I couldn't bear it. He put rubber gloves on and went out into the back yard. I never asked what he did--I was very, very sad.

the children stay with the father he has the costudy. but they are free to visit their mother. its pretty much the reverse situation to what is going on in the west.
Actually, what's more common in the US today is that both parents share custody and share in parenting decisions.

In marriage, the children BELONG to the Father. So, the choice is, be beaten, or lose your children. Even most American women would probably choose to be beaten if it meant completely losing her children.
Yes, very good point. I recall seeing a BBC documentary on this. It still haunts me how the mother was begging to keep at least one of her children--the father, and the courts said no. What a choice: stay and endure beatings or lose your children.

my next door neighbour is mentally abusing her 16 mo old baby...
by azaria inthe question isn't if i should do something about this, but how should i respond.
i only want to go to facs (family & childrens services) as a last resort.
i have considered asking if i could talk to her (in a non-threatening way), because i'm concerned for both of them.

Not a expert here, but I have two young children, and the sleepless nights are still a fresh memory. Do you have enough of a relationship with this mother to approach her? Maybe acknowlege that you know it's frustrating when you're sleep deprived and a baby won't go to sleep, but you're concerned about her screaming/yelling at an infant? Obviously, the infant is defenseless and cannot reason. Maybe you can ask her if she might want to pursue counseling, etc. Let her know that you hear everything she says to her child and you are becoming concerned for the child's safety.
I don't mean to minimize the fact that she's doing more harm than good by verbally abusing her child. But sometimes you can give people a wake up call by being frank with them. I think as a neighbor it might be worth it to talk to her frankly before pursuing legal angles. At least it gives her a heads up.
Not condoning the mom, but I remember, when I was in the throes of my daughter's colic, and literally sleep deprived, my mother told me she encountered the same thing with her first child. Finally, she decided to let my sister cry for quite some time because my mom was too exhausted to attend to her. She felt that my sister would eventually stop crying. The next morning a neighbor approached her and told her she had head my sister crying all night. My mom got the point very clearly.
Parents have a lot of pressure. You need to think whether your actions help more, or hurt more.

Is the Bible Just B.S.?
by shamus indo you think that god enjoys killing people?
it sure sounds like it to me; jw doctrine more or less scared me into thinking that god is going to kill all persons whom he/she thinks is not doing his will.
my question is, how can god kill someone for not being "christian", or following the bible out of sheer ignorance?

I approach the bible (very seldom, I might add), as a book of mythology. It's a loose "historical" account of a group of people, their beliefs, their relationship with their god (OT). OF course they are the chosen people, THEY have the true god, yada, yada, yada. The truely "inspriring" books if you can call them that, are Proverbs, a bit of Psalms (Like Psalms 23), basically those pithy proverbs that apply to all human kind and all human experience.
Regarding the NT, I do think the teachings of Jesus as recorded in a bible OTHER than the NWT, like KJames, etc., is worth reading. I do think Jesus had a message, although with my screwed up JW upbrining, I'm still struggling to be objective about it. I don't think he would have expected his message to materialize into JWs, Jerry Falwells, Pat Robersons.
I think a person owes it to him/herself to become at least a little familiar with the bible, as it has had immense influence on western culture. But, approach it as LITERATURE. Not the inspired word of God.

I'm a wine drinker myself; but gotta full bar at home; haven't a clue what to do with it. Great suggestions from others. And, of course, after a few drinks, no one CARES how they're mixed.
Happy birthday! Enjoy.

The stay alert and exspect terrorist attacks was all over the news media during the clinton administration .
I certainly don't recall the "Stay-alert" messages during that era (whatever "stay alert" meant). I did more national and international travel during that era than most people, and I never recall any warning to "stay alert" before I boarded a flight. I DO recall during the CLINTONX admin (added the X so it wont be deleted) sitting over in Europe watching groups of people burn American flags in Africa and the mideast. I remember thinking: this is BAD. Is anyone in the US(x) paying attention? Obviously they were NOT.
Now we are finding out that the government knew there were people from the middle east that were taking flying lessons and had terrorist ties but nothing was investigated .
Yeah, and we could have found out earlier if one of Clinton'sx aides hadn't set up an intelligence wall for "appearances" sake. Appearnces were VERY important in the Clinton(x) administration.

What is WITH the censors on this board. They deleted "Clinton" and "Iraq." Prior posts have deleted "US." Not sure what's up.
