It's true, somehow, because it's a religious decision, it's off limits to mess with, and everyone just has to sit back and be tolerant. And yes, I agree, I think the blood rule will slowly be chissled away until it becomes more of a "eyebrow-raised" but technically conscience matter. (You know, like college.)

parent murder due to medical negligence: Dateline
by Thegoodgirl indid anyone see the dateline special tonight: a mom was accused of murder because her diabetic daughter died, and the mom wasn't controlling the girl's blood sugars at all?
(the mom was taught and literally said "don't tell me how to take care of my own daughter.
") the girl dies at like age 9 or so, and her hemoglobin a1c was 16.1. normal is about 6.5, and 12 would be really high, 16.1 is astronomical.

One last act of separation
by jeanniebeanz inwell, i was cleaning out the last of the boxes from our move to texas and i came across my old new world translation.. i stopped and looked at it for a while, leafed through the pages to see the notes, hastily scribbled during some talk or another, little pieces of my life and world... some of the comments triggering memories of conventions, or relatives, mainly though, triggering feelings of... nothingness.. nothingness... that is what my time as a witness has boiled down to.
years of my life offered gladly to an organization that i believed would show me, and those whom i loved, the way to a better life where there would be no, "sickness, death or suffering" all meant nothing.. it used to make me mad or sad thinking about these things, but now there is just nothing.. not even when i think about my dad.
i used to get so upset at having lost him; i'd cry and hope that he'd see the light and leave the organization.

JB,
that must have brought memories. I hope the nothingness is a good feeling? If you mean you remembered the nothingness feelinig of being a JW, I so know what you mean. I think that feeling, more than any others, was what drove me away. It was such an empty silly life, studying about nothing, preaching to no one, giving talks with no result, struggling for nothing.
Isn't it great to have a life again with meaning and places to go?

I was so thinking, if this one goes through, how many Witness parents will go on trial for not giving blood to their kids who needed it? Do you think they should be charged for murder? And how fast would that blood policy be changed, do you think???

Marriage - Why bother?
by Spectrum inyet another friend's marriage has broken down(5th), this one i did not predict at all.
it came as a shock to me.
they got married after 10 years of living together so it's not like they didn't know each other.

Starting over: love that last comment.
Prophecor: yes, when you aren't sure about it in the fiirst place it takes a whole lot more work.
Good things about marriage: this partner for life can be such a source of stability in your life, someone to always come home to and be totally comfortable with as someone above said.
Bad things: they can totally insult you and your family, and you get so so so mad, but then you stop and think, there is absolutely nothing I can do change this person. And I will be sleeping next to them for the rest of my life

Richie's Elders: Deaf? Dumb? Both?
by RichieRich inlet me preface this by saying that i in now way mean to insult to the deaf/mute community by comparing them to leaders of a very prevalent cult, the jehovah's witnesses.
you see, in the service meeting last night, there was a talk based on an article in the january 2006 our kingdom ministry entitled "young ones: shining as illuminaters".
the brother who gave this part is my book study overseer, and a member of the "richie taskforce", i.e.

Excellent, Richie. I agree, you hopefully will open the way now for some parents in the congregation to okay their kids ideas on college. My sister had a 75% paid tuition scholarship to any school in the state, had gotten accepted, and just needed my mom's signature on some simple form for dorm room or finances or something. My mom refused to sign unless sister told her "the real reason she's going to college and to explain how it's going to help her pioneeer." Basically, sis couldn't take the pressure, said forget it, and is now a file clerk seven years later.
If some kid in the congo had said a comment like yours, I'm sure it would have cued my sister in on some excuse to use, and also softened my mom a bit. Of course you're doing the right thing.

Congrats Rich! Okay, maybe I was speaking about my own gym habits... I signed up for a one month one time and only went three days, including orientation day. It's just not my thing, and I'm jealous of you who have the will power.
Rich, you're anything but the average joe.

I'm not quite sure how to respond to this post. I kept thinking about it. Now it's all over the news. At first I thoought they were making a big deal out of nothing, but then, I realized what he said really was rude to anyone who is Not African American in the city. I think he was just trying to make a point, like Bill Cosby did, but then to sugar it over, with "But you all are welcome back, I do love you, and the city needs you".
Anyway, I like the guy, I think he's one of the few politicians who tries to say what he's actually thinking instead of what's on the teleprompt.

Ah, one of my favorite subjects. I wrote a ten page paper on this last Spring.
I like to tell people about things to add, not things to take away.
We should be eating 5-11 servings of fruit/vegetables per day. By the time you eat all that, you won't be so hungry for the bad stuff.
Think about WHY you've gained the pounds that you did. You probably know the reason. Start by changing a small thing or two. My husband and I resolved to replace our lunches with salads (he decided that's what he used to eat for his lunch in college, 25 pounds ago, so maybe that's what he should go back to). Just think, in doing that, (depending on what you formerly ate for lunch) you can save, like 300 calories or more. And don't eat nasty salads, eat tasty ones. Go to the salad bar and pile on the raisins, tomatoes, sesame seeds, olives, etc. Use the good lettuce, or whatever you like.
My personal resolve is to
1. Walk to and from work when temperature is above 32. It's a 30-35 minute walk, and waiting for/ riding the bus takes 25 minutes. So why not?
2. Eat salad for lunch. (okay, I also add a side of dinner roll and fruit salad, but it's still healthier than a slice of pizza).
And I would stay away from the juice. It's mostly sugar. I like the above poster's idea of mixing 1/3 juice with the rest water. Then it's 1/3 the sugar.
Finally, there's basically a new push for healthcare providers to tell their patients about WALKING and TAKING MORE STEPS throughout the day rather than saying go run on a treadmill. The truth is the majority of average overweight people are not going to go from sedentary to attending the gym regularly. But they CAN start walking 10 minutes per day. Each week increase it about 5 minutes until you get to 30 minutes. Goal: walk 30 minutes most days of the week. (moderate intensity).
My advice is free. :)

it wasn't a big surprise to anyone, including her.

I'm sorry for her. Hope you all can cope well with this. No, I would say hold off on telling them. In fact, why not let her tell her workmates when she feels it's okay? (And also armed with more information?)
