Will The Governing Body's Shunning Policy Backfire On Them Eventually?
by Brokeback Watchtower inwe all can agree that the disfellowshipping arrangement benefits the wt corporation by keeping the indoctrinated in servitude, make members afraid to doubt the corporation's teachings and explanations because they can be disfellowshipped for saying anything negative about the corporation or it's ceos or not agreeing with some new light.. but what about negative effects caused by the harsh use of disfellowshipping to the corporation, what could they be?
it's a two edged sword..

Cults in our Midst
by Lee Elder inthis is related to a comment i made in a previous thread.
cults exist in many diverse parts of society.
this includes politics.

Don’t know if Trump and supporters are cult, but they do lack common sense and moral sense, to support a man who lies compulsively and has confessed to crimes, including assaulting women and obstruction of justice, so far without conviction.

Sitting in a nearby burger place during the session, I met one last time. With something like, “the sessions are bit long and boring, huh?” as an opener. He told me I should check out the Cedars channel on YouTube. I said I am already familiar with that punk.

For Those Claiming That the GB are Simply Naive - Another Philly Story

This is explosive. If specific cases emerge where members of the governing body ignored cases of abuse, this could get very serious indeed. Don’t you think?

Removing scriptures and numbering
by carla inrecently there was a thread https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/5596141447020544/nwt-1984-vs-nwt-2013.
and kairos mentioned the following-.
i am baffled that john 8:1-12 was removed from their bible.it's a verse that makes judging and shunning impossible if you claim to be christian.".

Since JWs only tend to quote isolated verses and rarely whole chapters, let alone longer extracts, I don’t see that the situation is likely to arise often that they need to skip over these verses or explain the omission.
Someone may draw attention to it if they are clued up about the issue, in which case they may be an ex-JW or an Evangelical of the King James only variety. In which case they may have argued over something else other than this anyway.
It’s worth pointing about that it’s probably easier to spot that the verses are missing in an old fashioned print copy of the Bible over digital versions. Just one more way in which the turn to digital affects how JWs use and interact with texts.

Anyone think Assemblies will stop?
by blownaway innot completely but the expensive renting of halls or assembly hall ownership.
maybe with streaming they could have assemblies at the kh and stream the program.
i bet they cut costs in a lot of ways.

Oh I agree the videos are powerful, no doubt about that. I just don’t think they are as likely to get people to donate as the old book handouts, which is a separate issue.
Unless they designed a video that specifically ended in a crescendo of “give your valuable things to Jehovah now” swiftly followed by some sort of collection. I don’t think I’ve seen that.
It’s striking that JWs don’t pass a collection. Most other churches do. JWs have traditionally disparaged it, but it’s an important ritual apart from anything else.

I think we may be entering a dangerous phase of this whole fiasco.
To be specific I think the wagons are circling Trump and he knows it. I just hope that, in trying to save his own skin, he doesn’t do anything as terrible as start a war or foment civil strife. Or that if he does attempt this, his authority can be removed swiftly.

Yeah but a video is not an object in the hand the way a book is. I don’t think it creates the same sense of obligation to donate. They even used to position to contribution boxes next to to the queues for the new releases.

they explain that satan challenged god regarding his right to rule.
god failed to prove his right to rule.

It is not a red herring because you critiqued Hoffman’s use of language in terms which implied that he either did not understand what he was talking about or that he was misleading his audience in the way he was using scientific terms. In order for you to be able to make that judgement you would need to understand the terms at least as well as he does. Otherwise how would you know that he misused the language?
Hoffman’s proposals relate to the philosophy of mind, and his qualifications and posts seem appropriate to that. He got his PhD at MIT under a leading neuroscientist. No one says Daniel Dennett can’t talk about consciousness because he doesn’t have a strong enough scientific background. If anything Hoffman seems to have a stronger background in hard science.
Plus it’s worth noting that Hoffman is more specific about the view of quantum mechanics that supports his ideas during his conversation with Dennett and Chalmers, calling it Quantum Bayesianism. Dennett and Chalmers are both very intelligent and knowledgable in this discussion. If Hoffman wasn’t using scientific language accurately they would have pointed it out.
Hoffman doesn’t claim to be a theoretical physicist, but he does aim to use to science accurately and apply it to his own field. In fact if he was a theoretical physicist then where would be his training to talk about philosophy of mind? Hoffman’s credentials appear to be exactly what’s needed to be able to tackle this subject.
I guess it’s possible that a man with a PhD from MIT, with senior academic posts, awards, and publications, who has devoted his life to the problem of consciousness, and holds discussions with other experts in the field, doesn’t know the proper scientific use of the word “observer”. But I don’t think it’s likely.

People used to make a big donation after the new book was released, usually on the Saturday afternoon. I wonder how much contributions have gone down since they stopped new releases at conventions.
