finally, i've gotten everything lined up, all the loose ends tied - i am on my way.. i leave this thursday for my first leg: 3 months in japan!
Godspeed! ... er, um, Good Luck!!! ... damn, lemme try again, Don't Devolve!!
Just kidding. Enjoy your trip, bring back many senseless knickknacks and bric-a-brac.

i've been lurking for some time and now its time for me to say hello.
i want to call myself sam on here to avoid any repercussions, whatever they may be i have learnt to cover my back in this life from the experiences i now ask if i may relate.
i was born into a black working class household in england to a mother who had remarried after splitting up with her first husband in barbados.
Welcome, Sam!!!
what would you have done back in the 1st century when jesus came on the earthly stage and started christianity.
would you have became his follower?
how about after he left the earth and christianity began to spread by means of the apostles, would you have been involved in the many congregations that were started throughout the area?
defd,
According to the Scriptures, the First Century Christian had gifts that identified them as true servants of God. According to the Governing Body, such gifts have passed away. Thus, my questions to you relating to Scriptural basis for their authority. The Scriptural basis isn't obvious. You have to prove it.
You haven't answered. I don't believe you can.
The Catholic Church claims to have God backing their authority to teach and reveal truth to the laity. The Governing Body claims to have God backing their authority to teach and reveal truth to the laity. The Mormon's Governing Body makes the same claim. Are they all correct? How can you tell which one really has authority?
You know as well as I that we have been taught for decades to use the Bible to determine that point. Well, I ask you to use the Bible. Can you support the Faithful and Discreet Slave being viewed as a class of people by using only Scripture? Can you support that God has a "spirit-directed" organization at all, much less that the CCoJW is the one? Can you support that the Faithful and Discreet Slave are supposed to be receiving and revealing "new light"? Can you support that the other sheep cannot get "the truth" apart from the Governing Body's guidance?
Your response so far has been to ridicule the questions, like the Baptists ridicule questions about the Trinity and hellfire. When will you take up your own rules and apply them to yourself? When will you establish your beliefs on Scripture, instead of organizational rhetoric?

I would likely have suffered in silence. After all, the house of Jehovah had not yet been lifted above the mountains, the nations were not yet streaming to it, the refining work was not supposedly near completion, and they did not utter false prophesy in God's name to acquire gullible converts.
Any other questions?

i read the most extraordinary claim the other day.
"the bible is factual.
" i wondered, how could the speaker possibly back up such a claim?
TS,
i'll re-post over here and send you a PM.
Sounds like a plan.
The comment about not believing in anything relates to the futile argument that nothing is really real. It is futile because the person that believes this still acts as though reality is real.
The comment wasn't intended to compare your thoughts on God to mine. Just stating that unless you can change more than my mind I will likely continue to believe in God, just as I believe in that 18-wheeler you mentioned in another thread. I know at an atomic level there is more space than matter, but it seems that the grill on the 18-wheeler is solid enough to permanently dislocate much of my genetic material. Just for kicks, I will continue to behave as though it is really real. My life is benefitted by this acceptance of a reality that includes belief in 18-wheelers.
Looking forward to continuing the discussion in any venue.

does anyone know anywhere in the bible that condemns invading peoples privacy?.
i'm trying to get it through to a witness that it is wrong to snoop and eaves drop on other people, this person isn't taking any notice so i would like to be able to throw a scripture at them.
1 Thessalonians 4:11
Hope it helps, they tend to give only lip-service to respect for God's Word as an authority.

this is a very important observation, that the watchtower has not tried to explain in print why 607 bce is the year for the destruction of jerusalem for the last 17 years!!!.
all that the watchtower has done over most of the last two decades is to repeat over and over the year "607bce" in its publications as if it is an unquestioned fact!.
the last time an explaination for the year was attempted by the watchtower was in 1988 when the "insight" volumes were published, but since then, no explaination for the validity of the year has appeared in print.. this must mean something, but what?
scholar,
The only way to arrive at a 20 year gap is to insist on an understanding of the "70 years" of desolation for Jerusalem that disagrees with the view of 99%+ of scholars and academics in the world, including the understanding held by the Jews who were the subject of that 70 years. In other words, the CCoJW (Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses) creates the 20 year gap by their unsupported interpretation of the 70 years. This gap is not present in chronologies outside of cult-land.
That said, I no longer believe you are one of Jehovah's Witnesses. I believe you are a troll. I notice how you have latched onto the term "celebrated scholars", which even you know to be a misnomer, and you have used it repeatedly just to get a rise. Earlier you have posted that the view of the Watchtower is largely dismissed by scholars and academia, which means the only ones who possibly could be celebrating the Watchtower scholars are those who adhere to the teachings of the Watchtower.
I think we should completely overlook scholar's references to "celebrated scholars," as it muddies the water for lurkers who are still JWs when we go off on challenging tangential nonsense. No one could read a thread scholar posts to and come away with a good impression of JW scholarship. In future, I intend to respond only to factual errors in his posts. If only scholar celebrates the JW scholars, then the JW scholars are celebrated, yes? If you can frame the frustrating statements in a logical construct that yields a true result, I suggest skipping that side point and sticking to the points that come up false in any framework.

galatians 6:10- really, then, as long as we have time favorable for it, let us work what is good toward all, but especially toward those related to [us] in the faith.
i was thinking this weekend with hurricane rita devastating texas and louisiana that the jw's really do take care of their own when disasters strike.
however if you clearly read that scripture in galatians it says "work what is good towards all" then it says "espcially those related to us in the faith".
To be fair, kid-A, sometimes it is more than just intelligence. Sometimes it is luck. Sometimes it is just putting oneself in a position to discover information.
